I guessed power steering...but thought it was a pulley bearings/pump bearing...I guess a stethoscope could have helped, I know some mechinics can take a breaker bar and hold it to their ear and the engine/part--thye call them Bimmer Whisperers :)

not quite! found out it was the alternator making the noise but guess what my waterpump was on its way out as well!
