Wish I knew what that whistling noise is! Not all 51s' do it. The only other WWII machine I've heard making that noise was the CAC12 Boomerang, and it was because of the recessed gun ports in the wings that create a flute like noise.
I am certainly no expert but i would say that noise is likely to be the supercharger. But it is very loud, I have not heard one making that much noise before. Hope its not on the way out.
Straight cut gears on the Aux. drive unit. Bevel cut gears are quieter but not as reliable and create thrust in the output shaft that can't be corrected without machine work. "Dee Brown" (retired Rolls Royce engineer)
That's very lucky indeed.. The closest I've managed a Mustang (so far) is seeing Maurice Hammonds P51 Mustang G-MSTG Janie over Boxted Air Station every year, while they still had the Fly-Ins.. sadly they no longer run them, which is a great shame! He and a friend also made the first Mustang landing on that Airfield since WWII, back in 2004 I believe.. that was an almost tearfilled moment.. :) Sadly I lost all my footage from the Fly-Ins when my computer crashed earlier this year..
The best aviation moment I've had, as I've not yet flown, was seeing the Duxford P 47 'No Guts' No Glory' performing a VERY impressive air display just outside my bedroom window, as it flew over Boxted! (Yes, I live close by :) Shame they had to sell both the Boxted airfield, and the Thunderbolt! At least the P 47 is pleasing the crowds in the US now. The new owner of the airfield has knocked most of the remaining old WWII buildings down, luckily I managed to get some on camera back in 2006.

Who flew you?

It´s the Wind blowing over the Gun Ports. On other P-51´s those Ports are sealed.
Simple but simple....

Just gotta love the sound of that engine.. Being a P47 fan myself, I must say that the P51 do have some good points too.. :)

How did you get a flight in the P51
REI02021809 2 years ago
Ah, so you were the lucky one!
No wonder you have the name luckystrike! And was that you who got a flight in FF after the show back to DX?
It really was a wonderful surprise to kick off an excellent show, and as this video shows, Alister Kay really did a fantastic display.
