Interesting tune. Bruce often talks about getting his first guitar at Western Auto, but I can't remember him explaining how he learned to play the piano. Anyone have insight on this?
Does an MP3 of this exist somewhere? I'm starting work on a ultimate Bruce Springsteen mix CD to keep in the car and I so would like to have this one on it. Any one have an MP3?
does anyone else remind the piano line starting at 2:20 (and coming back again late rin the song) on the piano line of michael jackson's earth song? it sounds a bit similar i think
The great songwriters have the amazing ability to create beautiful lyrics that can fit any mood the listener might have, and the sound also plays a huge part in the mood of a song. Not many people can write and compose the sound of those songs to describe all the emotions and feelings of the working class. Bruce Springsteen is one of those elite few who can do that. When we look back years from now, he'll be ranked by many as one of the top 5 greatest musicians of all time.
He would have been around 22 years old when he wrote this hidden gem. Tell me another songwriter in living memory who could have come up with something as deep, penetrating and powerful as this at such a young age ? I am a big Dylan fan as well, but for me Springsteen just stands alone on a different planet from anyone else.
The man is unique and his unequalled status in popular music will unfortunately not be recognised until he is no longer with us.
@johnnyM809 while his talent is undeniable, i do have to say that it isn't too surprising that he composes so greatly at the ripe age of 22 yrs old, as that is about when the typical human peaks (or at least around it)

@InfiniteExistence No worries. Dunno how to reverse it either. They should almost have an "Are You SURE You Wanna Vote Thumbs Up or Thumbs down?" box to click. LOL ;D

Lyrics correction: it's not "A banshee 'good night'"' it's "and bid you 'good night'", but in idiomatic speech (one of Springsteen's trademarks) it sounds like "'n bidjya 'good night'".
It is a different time and he is a different person. Think how you were when you were in your early twenties. That said, his first two albums were so infused with rich words and images. Loved the deep dynamics.
It baffles me that Bruce can write something like this in his early twenties which is so rich and deep, but 30 years later he comes up with pedestrian dross such as 'Empty Sky' or half of the stuff on his new album.
Aren't artists supposed to get better over time? I know it's subjective and he writes whatever he wants to at the time, but come on - 'Queen of the Supermarket'? Give us a break.
Note to Jon Landau: next 'official' release should include some of this fantastic archive stuff.
@theTOOJ i kinda find it really disrespectful to always cut artists into the "old" and the "young" parts..he still is the same person for god's sake. say that you would have liked to see him in the 70's, but don't say you want to see the "young bruce". that sounds like bullshit.
still listening to this..........its just madly fantastic, it has such power, its so dark, so uh.....its just absolutely mindblowing......bruce u are nothing less than god.....
this might make some people angry but im entitled to say what i want to.. The boss has always been one very unispiring and horrible voiced singers ive ever heard. but the piano is nice

Great stuff..
Another Lyric correction..lol
"You lay watchin' them off, eat a hole in his cloth"
Should read
"He lay watching a moth, eat a hole in his cloth"
" Around the waist " should read " Around her waist "

Hi Ev2clip-
I think the lyric: "You lay watchin' them off, eat a hole in his cloth" is supposed to be: "He lay watchin' a moth eat a hole in his cloth."
Thanks for posting this! What a gem.
