hi i've a question for you... if i clone my HD system to another HD/SSD... the new HD will have an image or the extatly system with running programs, folders and settings??? i need to have the exatly system because i've to do a change from HD to another SSD and not a backup... so once i've cloned the system i need to go immediatly.... let me know ... thanks
After booting from cloned external hard drive, how i can restore everything back to my main Mac HD. ( i already cloned my Snow leopard to WD 111 gb external hard drive)
If i want to clone my Harddisk, i will clone it with Snow Leopard and CCC. Then i want to bring all the users, data and applications to my new computer. But my new computer has Lion. How do y bring all my Stuff from the Clone to the new computer? Can i copy it with disk utility?
@copilotoo: No in your case use Timemachine and do the backup with your current setup, then after loading Lion you can restore your data back with the Timemachine on Lion.
@copilotoo: With every Mac OS you can restore your data / apps / etc if you have a Time machine backup so just use the Time Machine option to restore your data back to your new OS.
@Escorpio40: No if you upgrade from Snow Leopard to LION you will not lose any data the upgrade should be seamless keeping all your data and apps intact but still I always suggest to do a backup of the entire drive before a OS upgrade.
Yes I am running both, macbooks are being sold from 2008 I think with dual boot, windows7 and OSX, i want to get a new bigger hard drive like 500gb, (i have 160) but dont want to lose windows..thanksranjit..
I'm planning on upgrade my HDD for my Macbook, my options are the seagate momentus XT hybrid 500gb 32MB cache or the seagate momentus 750gb 16MB. Which one do you recommend. Does the hybrid make a big difference with the speed? Will i have to partition it in a different way? Thanks for the great tutorial!
@Bemap30: No need to make any partitions just clone your entire current drive to the new Momentus hybrid drive and it should be good to go....... These Hybrid drives are a little faster than standard HDD but just you need to use them for a day or two so that it can cache the most used data on 4GB flash memory it has and then you should see a bump in your boot speeds and frequently launched applications.
@geekyranjit one more thing, do you recommend to add a second HDD or is it better just to upgrade the current one? cuz i considered also add an ssd in the optical drive. just hope i'm not too off topic. thanks for your answer
@Bemap30: By default the HDD that you have on your Macbook would be a 5,200 rpm drive and now can go with 7,200 rpm disk drive to it makes sense to replace the same coz it would be faster...... also if you do not use the optical drive yeah you can install a SSD into the same and load the OS on the SSD but you need to get the adapters for the same.
Hello, I have purchased IMac just two months ago. I have installed my music software, few apps and gathered about 1 GB data on it. I would like to make exact bootable image of this stuff on my external HD. Will CCC erase all data from my internal HD before it will make image or it will make image on external HD and save all my data?So the question is :in order to make bootable image of my Lion OS on external HD I have to wipe up internal disk or CCC will save all data?
@Benton7395: No CCC wil not touch your data on internal HDD, it will just use the external HDD and you can make an exact clone of your system to the external HDD.
To make the external HD bootable you need to use the disk-utility software on the Mac and format the external HD in the Mac OS Journaled as shown in the video.
I'm sorry for being ignorant, but what is the difference between, "Carbon Copy Cloner vs. Time Machine" don't' they initially do the same thing if I'm not mistaken?
@lyricallysikh1: Nope they are different, you cannot boot from your Time Machine backup if your Mac is not booting but with a CCC backed up HDD you can directly boot your Mac from the cloned HDD......... think of Time Machine as a backup system it also keep previous versions of files and CCC is like a rescue disk / image of your HDD.
I personally use Time Machine every day, but CCC my Mac only once every 30 days or before major upgrades.
Hi Ranjit, Thanks for making this video. It is very clear teaching and helpful. Now I can upgrade to a larger hard drive without having to redo everything.
@calvarado15: Sorry I did not understand..... What CCC will do is make a exact copy of your hard-disk so all programs etc there are there on the drive will work, You can even boot up your Mac computer with this Cloned HDD if you primary HDD fails or Mac OS has some problem...... BTW I did not test it with Lion please check developer site for Lion.
@icecoldone4: Yes you can use the same external drive to clone and use a Timemachine.
To do that you need to partition the drive into 2 parts instead on 1 as shown in the video, the first partition you use for Carbon copy cloner...... and the second partition you can then use for the Timemachine...... be sure to select the second partition in the time machine settings.
@icecoldone4: Yeah....... in the disk utility now when you select this external backup drive do you see two partitions now, if so you can sue that second partition with Timemachine and the first one with carbon copy cloner to clone your machine....... BTW make sure in carbon copy cloner when you backup to your external drive it say it's bootable...... on the right panel lower side, I hope this info you helpful.
