  • The amazing fact of this bass line is that geddy plays it only with one finger

  • tab please?

  • Great work!

You sure can't mistake the sound you get from those Geddy Fenders. I too have the same 2 basses that are seen in this video :) I think my RIck needs a fret job from playnig the hell out of it for over 20 yrs lol

  • I love this song, well covered. I'm curious as to which bass is more comfortable to play... I've never played a Ric and I think I would like one, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Thanks! More vids! Please.

  • @vtx1300dave Thanks! Both Basses are top notch. Both have extremely high playability. Both have significantly different feel. Rick has a thicker neck than the Jazz. Jazz strings seem slightly more spaced out than the Ric. I love them both.

    Sorry.....I know that's not much help. :)

  • this is a great song, and a great cover. just wish it was done on fretless like Geddy

  • @erbonetti Thank you......wish I had one too.

  • @07hottie0

geddy lee jazz bass > Rickenbacker 4003

  • Love it if you could make a video explaining the Geddy Lee technique. It's quite tricky!

  • Excellent! Well played at 1:50. I've never tried this one myself. I see below that you're taking some heat for not using the rick. You should take it out of frame so as not to excite the fanatics.

  • @TJH3113 Thanks again for the nice words! As for the rick......I am not too worried about the heat. :-)

  • What people may not know is that I have played that Rick for almost 25 years.......I really do love it. What's not to love? They are and awesome bass!

  • yeah thats exactly why geddy uses the jazz bass now

they're both insane basses calm the fuck down

  • yea im kinda wondering what everyone else is lol. why not bust out the ric?

  • awesome job but why are you playing that jazz when you have a Ric in the back?!

  • fail

    geddy lee jazz bass rules

  • you sound wonderful. can you tell me please what is your equipment (preamp, amp)?

  • by the way the "chorus" of this song is played:

    --0-0-7-6-3h5-5-5-3h5/9\

  • geddy lee has no specific technique. he just pwns ass at everything. besides his technique is impossible to replicate. good luck learning what he does

  • In live his right hand positions always changes sometimes he plays like jaco did he puts his thumb on the pikup and plays all the strings (still leaving his thumb on the pikup). But his common technique is:

Hitting the E: rest thumb on the pikup

Hitting the A: rest thumb on the E string

Hitting the D: rest thumb on the A string

Hitting the G: rest thumb on the D string

  • Geddy Lee is...AMAZING! Good cover

  • Hey man, im also a fellow Gl jazz bass owner, I have a question, what did you have your treble, bass, and volume on in this video?

  • I wish I could afford a Ric like that. I can't even afford a GL Jazz. Closest thing I have is a Standard J with a badass bridge. Oh well, nice cover!

  • Amazing playing! 5*

  • TY Javic2112!

  • wnils by the way, that's some great playing, how long have you been playing?

Do you mind explaining Geddy's technique? I wish I could play like that, I wanna practice his technique

  • his technique is that he fucking owns all...

  • Yeah I know that but I wanted to be more specific :P

  • I just sent you a PM.......

  • Yeah I got it mate, thanks a lot, I understand it. I had no idea Geddy used the middle and index fingers twice each, that is messed up, gonna take some practice.

  • Wow i'm a bass player and I think the Fender Brand basses are the best one to have if you're in a band that isn't doing any stuff in drop D tuning. If you're doing that then go and get yourself a Music Man.

  • Comment removed

  • i think fenders are amazing, and yeah i own one but they're aren't too good for metal-ish stuff because they sound twangy, but they are good for stuff with fast lines

  • I prefer my Rickenbacker 4001 over a Fender Jazz Bass... Especially for playing old, classic stuff. I'm obsessed with that stuff. :)

My Rick looks almost just like the one in the background. :D Same color and everything (fireglo)

  • I played that (Ruby Red) Rick exclusively for almost 25 years. Don't get me wrong, I love it. The Rick is an awesome bass but after that many years, and now finally owning another truly awesome bass, I guess you could say that I am still in the honeymoon stage with the Jazz.

  • Oh, I must've gotten my color wrong. I think mine's Ruby Red, too. (I've looked up fireglo on google images and what I saw is something slightly different than mine, yellow-ish towards the center... I looked up ruby red and I saw what looks just like mine)

Mine's from Feb '79 (serial "SB"), but I'm the second owner (got it less than a year ago). It's probably been the best purchase of my life. :D

    When's yours from?

  • Very nice, sexy bass too. What's Geddy's style, just flicking his index finger back and forth like a pick? Cuz I already do that..and this is the first I've heard of "Geddy Lee style". :P In a song like this one with lots of notes on two separate strings I use my index on the lower string and middle on the higher string for plucking...mainly because I'm too lazy to figure out how to alternate pick (with my fingers) :P Also I use the tip of the neck as my thumb rest so I pluck real high up.

  • After seeing a 'Guitar Player' interview vid of Ged showing how he played the main riff, I had to teach myself this new (to me) style of alternate finger raking two strings in time. It's different than the finger flicking (Flemenco) style that he does so much. Yes he does a little bit of that Flemenco picking in MalNar but it's really all about the alternating finger raking in this song.

  • What does Flemenco style mean? (what do you do?)

  • Thanks Kpalsm!

  • hehe i see a Rickenbacker back there ;) great playing man! that was sick!

  • Hi, wnlis! I have a question for you, how many years ago you started to play this instrument? It's not important, it's just a question ;)

sorry for my poor english, but i'm italian :)

  • 25 years. I have never been in a band though....just made allot of noise through the years in the confines of my bedroom/apartments/and basement.

  • do you like the ric or the geddy more??

  • I think not only is the bass giving you a re great tone, but you also play pretty close to the neck which also gives you a great ballsy sound. Nice job. I'm torn between buying the Schecter 004 diamond series bass and this Gessy Lee Bass. Now you have me leaning more towards this one. Take care.

  • nice job man!

  • Thanks.... :)

Funny to think how many times I played that song trying to figure it out last year(100+).....now I go back to it once or twice a week. Love this song so much.....man Ged really knows how to funk it up...

  • playing it that many times really payed off! =] You did great! ya this song is just awesomee, and yess he does! one of the many reasons he is so damn kick ass! lol

  • Hi

Would you mind explaining the right hand technique you're using here.

I've been trying this song using my usual two finger technique but it sounds poo

    Tar

  • I'd like to 2nd the call for a right-hand explanation! Are you using 3 fingers?

    Love your stuff! Thanks!

  • what r you using for an amp?

    sounds good.

  • Thanks,

    It's a Line6 LowDown175

  • That bass kicks ass, I want one too!

  • You should try it on a fretless like GL did. I really like your cover!

  • I wish I could afford to spring for third bass! Not gonna happen in this decade though. :(

    Thanks for the comp Rocko619.

  • How well do you like that GL model fender? I'm thinking of getting one.

  • Love it. Have you played one yet? Go check one out at your local shop if you can.

  • I've played around with one in the music shop a couple times. I love the sound and action on these not to mention the look. I think I'd like a tortoise shell pick guard on mine though. Also, I wonder if the thinned, custom tapered neck is more susceptible to warping?

  • That was an issue which is why it has a double truss rod.

  • Don't suppose anyone knows if it comes in left handed, i suffer the curse of the south paws and it's really hard to find a decent bass anywhere

  • I just got one for my birthday. The sustain is incredible and the neck is very fast. Nicest bass I have ever had the pleasure of playing over the course of 24 years. It's a little heavier than my old '92 Squier II J Bass, but the tone and the feel more than make up for it. I got my Geddy J used for $650, but it is a 2008 model and only 6 months old and it came with a hard shell case, so I got a great deal.

  • i got mine brand new for 720

  • I got mine brand new for 625...I got lucky and happened to choose the absolute best time to buy it.

  • I got mine for $680, store demo version. However, it has no scratches, sounds amazing, and im gonna put some rotosounds on it

  • after couple times rewatching ur clip,i saw another bass on the back wall,is that a old rickenbaker...lucky u

  • dreamed bass...nicely done dude.thks

  • Thanks Patrick!

  • I brought this song into my band class. :D

At lunch,(we have class then lunch) half the people were humming the guitar part.

  • Thanks they sound great. btw I just bought the Geddy Lee Fender today at GC. I'm in love all over again. When I first played it my ears had a f'n orgasm!

  • Hey that's great! Congrats! It's a great bass. Post some vids soon.........

  • I'm looking to post Black sabbath (turn up the night) (Country Girl) and Heaven and Hell. Maybe a couple of Rush like Bangkok or Lakeside Park>

  • Looking forward to watching them. BTW...I just posted Lakeside Park the other day. :)

  • bangkok is an easy song just to let u know

  • yeah I know, havent seen it here before tho.

  • Wow, that's really great... <3

  • Thank you rushfan729! Glad u enjoyed it. If you like realy old Rush, I just posted Lakeside Park from Caress of Steel! Happy New Year......

  • Great job, Can I ask what kind of strings are you using. Are they nickels?

  • Thanks bohemond4.

The strings are RotoSound Jazz Bass 77LD Standard gauge.

  • Truefully dude this is your best video. Thanks for the video and keep them coming and enjoy the "Limelight".

  • Thanks man....Much appreciated!

I'm working on getting a good take of New World Man next. Some say it's one of the easy Geddy tunes and I would almost agree......unless your interested in "Geding" it perfect. ;) The reggae feel and staccato style are actualy quite intricate.
