  • It's from 'Nicely Out Of Tune' and various 'best ofs' which are available on iTunes

  • Sad old git here. Once wore velvet jeans and 'tied dies'. I recorded recorded from the radio back in 1970/1971 on a reel to reel and the version I have was accompanied with strings. Extremely haunting. That reel is no longer playable - I wonder why ??. If anyone can tell me where I can find that track (or maybe the album it came from) you would make an old(ish) man very happy ! Thanks.

  • Named my daughter after this song!

  • I was there with my girlfrend who was at Newcastle unI. This brings back priceless memorys for me?

  • I miss them city hall neets man!

  • Great song, what a memory. The Geordie Beatles!

  • Alan Hull, yet another sadly departed musician, wrote this fantastic song, and many others. Ta for posting this great video!

  • Christmas concerts were one big party , never been to any concerts like them where all the audience were in total harmony

  • They were Brilliant were'nt they! Great time's.

  • RIP uncle gorden i didnt get no know u well but i still love you xxx

  • The Moody Blues would do a great version of this

  • All gone now. Ahhhhhhhh I wish I had a time machine!

  • Canny that like ...

Great Christmas concerts - always got a balcony seat & had a fab sing-along - lost count of how many of them I went to...great post :-)

  • i knew a dremer growin up who turned me on to alot of obscure stuff

  • Oh yes - me & my sister used to sit on the cheap seats on the stage behind the band. It's what Christmas was all about... I still have my free live LP (Lindisfarntastic!) we got one year...

  • First saw lindisfarne when they were a support band for FREE at newcastle city hall in the early seventies...been a fan ever since .. the christmas concerts were pure nostalgia ...

  • I went to see these in 1984 at Newcastle City Hall at their Christmas concerts. It was my first ever concert and I was 10 years old !!! I still have my back stage pass somewhere in a box in the loft !!! ;o)

  • Yeah...great. Thanx for posting. Remember getting out of school and going to the record shop to buy this. Still have it, in it's picture sleeve. Cheers..........

  • great!

  • Nice version of a great song

  • Wonderful :)

I'll be trying to go see 'the gathering ' with Ray hopefully.

  • Great song. Shame the hairy Lindisfarne version that was on Top of the Pops circa 1971either no longer exists (wiped courtesy of the farsighted BBC) or hasn't been posted on here.

  • so good it goes to my youth and there is not much these days to beat it ,long live lindis.

  • Another brilliant song superb arrangement.

  • This is one of the best songs ever written. Just wonderful! I'll look for my Lind vinyl tomorrow.

  • My names Eleanor.. Eeeee :)

  • your niot serious? becuase i think there're on about queen Eleanor mother to richard 1st and prince John during the crusdaes.

  • I'm being bored and searching every song i can on YouTube with Eleanor in it

    :)

    (I'm really fucking bored)

  • This is a truly classic track. This isn't the best recording of it but it's enough to display how brilliant this band were. Very very underrated even in the '70's. I saw them at Loughborough university in the '80's, as it turned out with the unfortunate death of Alan Hull I'm glad I went as it can't be repeated. This is important, with live acts you'll never see it the same again.

Back to this - truly brilliant

  • I don't know how it sounded in 1972, because I wasn't around then. I put a video on the web last week but it's not very good quality. I play it the way my dad does. I never heard a recording of it until a few weeks ago when I found these.

  • Not even a patch on the original Summer 1972 version!

  • Spooky! Great song!

  • saw lindisfarne live in swindon in 2005, great performance, lady eleanor was truly magical.good one boys

  • I won tickets and a backstage pass + signed albums and merchandise from a Signal Radio competition preceeding the Christmas Concerts (Victoria Hall, Stoke on Trent)

These guys performed an atmospheric version of Lady Eleanor that made the hairs on the neck stand up.

Wonderful chaps backstage. Friendly and very genuine guys.Within an hour I felt I'd known them all my life.

I followed them for years. Great band, great musicians. How I wish I could go back to those days.

  • carnt beat this and im a macum

  • Is there not a better version of this on YouTube? Its one of my favourite songs!

  • This was recorded in the city hall newcastle - you can see the folks dancing behind the band. Wonder if it was at one of the many christmas gigs they did in the 70s - fantastic song, fantastic nights out - thanks for posting happy memories

  • It do's not matter mate - classic reminder of a great band and of course the "Late Alan Hull"

  • Shame sound quality not doing justice to this brilliant song - great to find it though.

  • Fantastic. Seen them 4 or 5 times, and they were brilliant everytime.

  • Nicely out of tune....Thats the album, The Winter Song on there too.

A tragedy Lindisfarne is remembered for "fog on the tyne"

  • Early seventies trade mark track - very evocative of my youth. Thanks a lot for the posting!

  • steveasat2 All songs implying the afterlife belong on the web where we can chill out to them.

  • Marvelous song - and it's even more atmospheric in the studio version, btw.

  • i was named after this song!!! i love it!!!

  • is your name Eleanor?

  • Yes, of course! Eleanor Frances.......

  • wow! your name is beautiful...the song is beautiful...You are beautiful :-)

Do you have more favourite songs or singers/groups?

My emailaddress is roelhfd AT yahoo dot co dot uk

I will love it to hear more from you.

    I come from Holland

  • come on the geordies, you beautifull people.

  • a deep void in many peoples lives missed. R.I.P alan one of if not the best from the toon, love and respect

  • Someone asked who this song was about. The last line of the first verse is "In walked Roderick Usher with the Lady Eleanor". It's from an Edgar Allan Poe story.

  • Although not just one Poe story, but several. Rod's sister in "Fall of the House of Usher" was actually named Madeline. Eleanor is a closer match to Lenore in "The Raven", the narrator's lost love and his hope for an afterlife.

  • Another brilliant song superb arrangement. Thanks.

  • Greatest song ever

  • Sorry, second greatest

  • Wats the greatest??

  • Winter Song

  • Went to see them in the 80s with my girlfriend(1st love) We've just met up again after too many years av gone by and the memories just keep caoming back!! This 1s for u Claire XX

  • duz anyone remember seeing ..string driven thing ...back up band for lindisfarne,,,long time ago...70's

  • I saw them at a student hall of residence in Manchester back in 1973! I remember them as being very good live. I bought an album of theirs which was so so.

  • yep good band live but thats all. does anyone remember the strangeways. a rock band that backed up iron maiden . manchester.

  • Yeah, were'nt they all accustic? Sure they played Devon. Not bad!

  • I remember string driven thing, both as a support to Lindisfarne and aslo as a headline band in their own right. Their "Take me to the circus" is one of my all time favourite "unknown by everyone else songs."

  • come on man,who was this about?(someone who sat in the bar?)

  • I named my daughter Eleanor,god I must be a sad case.

  • great song ,my favourate lindisfarne song along with meet me on the corner

  • One of my all time fave songs.. sad that they split up in 2005.

  • first seen lindisfarne 1972 in redcar been a fan since last band member i saw was rod clements 2005 at the wickerman fest long live the music of lindisfarne

  • One of the great bands of the 70's

  • a phantastic sound, also listened in Germany many many years after its appearance

  • Lindisfarne do disco!

  • Love this song.
