Sad old git here. Once wore velvet jeans and 'tied dies'. I recorded recorded from the radio back in 1970/1971 on a reel to reel and the version I have was accompanied with strings. Extremely haunting. That reel is no longer playable - I wonder why ??. If anyone can tell me where I can find that track (or maybe the album it came from) you would make an old(ish) man very happy ! Thanks.
Oh yes - me & my sister used to sit on the cheap seats on the stage behind the band. It's what Christmas was all about... I still have my free live LP (Lindisfarntastic!) we got one year...
First saw lindisfarne when they were a support band for FREE at newcastle city hall in the early seventies...been a fan ever since .. the christmas concerts were pure nostalgia ...
I went to see these in 1984 at Newcastle City Hall at their Christmas concerts. It was my first ever concert and I was 10 years old !!! I still have my back stage pass somewhere in a box in the loft !!! ;o)
Yeah...great. Thanx for posting. Remember getting out of school and going to the record shop to buy this. Still have it, in it's picture sleeve. Cheers..........
My guys knew these guys really well =) He was in a band called Cardinal Amber who they knew, apparently their lead singer was a rite twat. My band have an interview i front of Billy whathisface for Sunday For Sammy on Sunday =)
Great song. Shame the hairy Lindisfarne version that was on Top of the Pops circa 1971either no longer exists (wiped courtesy of the farsighted BBC) or hasn't been posted on here.
This is a truly classic track. This isn't the best recording of it but it's enough to display how brilliant this band were. Very very underrated even in the '70's. I saw them at Loughborough university in the '80's, as it turned out with the unfortunate death of Alan Hull I'm glad I went as it can't be repeated. This is important, with live acts you'll never see it the same again.
Hey there! Read about the Bonus Code THERIVER here! Does that Code also work somewhere else as well? If yes, does it get me a $888 there too like at 888 com/Bonus ? Please help me quickly, I heard those Codes are only valid for a week or so. THX, Mark
I don't know how it sounded in 1972, because I wasn't around then. I put a video on the web last week but it's not very good quality. I play it the way my dad does. I never heard a recording of it until a few weeks ago when I found these.
I won tickets and a backstage pass + signed albums and merchandise from a Signal Radio competition preceeding the Christmas Concerts (Victoria Hall, Stoke on Trent)
These guys performed an atmospheric version of Lady Eleanor that made the hairs on the neck stand up.
Wonderful chaps backstage. Friendly and very genuine guys.Within an hour I felt I'd known them all my life.
I followed them for years. Great band, great musicians. How I wish I could go back to those days.
This was recorded in the city hall newcastle - you can see the folks dancing behind the band. Wonder if it was at one of the many christmas gigs they did in the 70s - fantastic song, fantastic nights out - thanks for posting happy memories
Someone asked who this song was about. The last line of the first verse is "In walked Roderick Usher with the Lady Eleanor". It's from an Edgar Allan Poe story.
Although not just one Poe story, but several. Rod's sister in "Fall of the House of Usher" was actually named Madeline. Eleanor is a closer match to Lenore in "The Raven", the narrator's lost love and his hope for an afterlife.
Went to see them in the 80s with my girlfriend(1st love) We've just met up again after too many years av gone by and the memories just keep caoming back!! This 1s for u Claire XX
I saw them at a student hall of residence in Manchester back in 1973! I remember them as being very good live. I bought an album of theirs which was so so.
I remember string driven thing, both as a support to Lindisfarne and aslo as a headline band in their own right. Their "Take me to the circus" is one of my all time favourite "unknown by everyone else songs."
first seen lindisfarne 1972 in redcar been a fan since last band member i saw was rod clements 2005 at the wickerman fest long live the music of lindisfarne
It's from 'Nicely Out Of Tune' and various 'best ofs' which are available on iTunes

They'd all be drunk - band, audience, technicians. Hence the rough sound.
