My deal with Jerry was..he took on BULLSHIT FILMS!!! Supersuck, this one, powder, the swarm to name a few. I know he wanted to make money...but to score a bad flick like supergirl!!! wow
Japanese compositors Mitsuo Hagita and Akino Arai made this music, not Jerry Goldsmith. This is from the anime Record of Lodoss War. watch?v=PKtYqh7VDEo&feature=related
@PiripiriChili It's the other way around those Japanese composers blatantly ripped off Jerry Goldsmith. "Leviathan" came out on March 17, 1989 whereas ROLW anime came out 30, 1990 through November 20, 1991.
I'm pretty sure bits of this piece were recycled for the ending of Record of Lodoss War. Likewise, a lot of the music from the climax of this film and that series seems way too similar...
@okami36 Many of the great film composers over the last few decades have used music from other films, especially if they composed those other movies too.
I liked Leviathan. A graceful mix of the great 80s and 50s styles of sci-fi horror. The story and confined space theme of the 80s and the FX and monster style of the 1950s -60s
Sit back and enjoy the end credits, which Jerry called "A Lot Better" after the last line of the film - Meg Foster, the film's non-creature baddie, asks Peter Weller and Amanda Pays how they're feeling, Weller punches her out (!) and says "Better. A lot better."
Jerry Goldsmith may have been synonymous with Star Trek the Next Generation, and a number of the films, but I don't think his sound would have matched the style of JJ Abrams' film. I do love Jerry's work on The Motion Picture and Final Frontier (though, I am partial to James Horner's work on Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock)
Leviathan is an under-appreciated movie, with an equally under-appreciated soundtrack. Not a great movie, but should certainly not be totally ignored.
@K1productions I don't think Goldsmith would have even considered scoring the new Trek movie if he was alive and was approached. . When someone asked him about scoring Burton;s Planet of the Apes remake he clearly had no interest, "nothing to say musically on the subject" he said. Perhaps he would have felt the same with this new Trek movie.
I like this score Jerrys musical talent has signature tone that tells most Goldsmith fans arrr! Thats Jerry Goldsmith. I most have seen the film on youtube 5 or 6 times now saw it once in the cinema in Dolby stereo SR type sounded wonderful. Now all I need is the DVD region 1 as its not out in the UK as of yet.
Goldsmiths score is the best thing about this film. Goldsmith also scored Deep Rising another "Alien" wanna be, again the best thing about it was his score.
@DMaustrap the movie is also very good, i love it. Peter Weller and Richard Crenna are amazing. the fx are fantastic. the story is low but forget the story. it´s pure entertainment!!! :-)

@avatarnarutochuck Ok. But those two japanese compositors made a lot of good music to ROLW, strange they would suddenly rip of Goldsmith. Oh well...

Also The Secret of Nimh is a gorgeous score, and one of the few he provided for an animated film.

For all you Jerry fans, I'm sure you're well aware of it, but if not get hold of his score to Legend. It's, well, a legend.

If Jerry was still around I wonder if he would be commissioned to score the new Star Trek film?

He died a few years ago.

It would certainly be interesting. He would be the first composer to score all three incarnations of "Trek" on the big screen.
Still, I think Michael Giacchino was more than up to the task, His score reminded me of Goldsmith at times.
