  • genesis can suck my balls!!

  • Very funny ad! We've switched from Genesis to "Power Shop" a few days ago and it'll save us between $15 to $20 per month. That's over $200 a year for one phone call so we're pretty chuffed. :)

  • The great joke is Greenpeace's main office in Holland uses French nuclear power to power it's offices and international email campaigns. Why ? Because Holland's wind factories aren't reliable, and Holland knows that nuclear power is the cleanest and safest power in the world. That's why they buy it year in year out. And Greenpeace just loves it's reliability.

  • Anyone who thinks nuclear is clean, sustainable or safe doesn't really understand much about it.

  • or rather, anyone who thinks it's otherwise doesn't really understand much about it.

  • Im enviromentaly conscience.I use steel shot when I shoot the bloody Pukeko's during gamebird season. But really.Hydro or Geothermal is the way to go,or,how about some lights getting turned off around the place in some of these massive buildings in Auckland at night? But they can use the money that they have already robbed from us to do it.

  • Ok... I'm all for stopping climate change but how are we supposed to generate energy in a reliable, environmentally friendly way? Wind power is only reliable 35% of the time, hydro destroys a river's eco-system, solar is inefficient and cost's an absolute f-load to build and there are hardly any geo-thermal sites available for development because you would upset the locals. That only really leaves us with tidal power... now that is a hazard to shipping and also cost's an f-load to build.

  • wind is reliable if you build it over a large area. Eg. if its not blowing in palmerston north, then it is almost always blowing somewhere else like te waka that can pick up the absense of palmy.

  • Wake up NZ, whose going to be whining when our earth is polluted and power is the least of our worries!! Pull your head out of your ass and see the sun while you still can! Check what Greenpeace dose for NZ and any other environmental issue that deserves there attention. We will see what happens when the time saving luxuries (that i enjoy to) are gone and burning coal may have just contributed to speeding that up. Wake up because without the sun the trees don't grow. Etc etc etc

  • All you clever tree huggers need to stop wasting electricity watching videos on YouTube and then arguing about them. Go write a letter on a piece of recycled paper with a piece of charcoal and bitch to the Greens so you aren't a TOTAL hypocrite. As for Greenpeace, instead of just complaining about everything, how about you offer some realistic alternatives? Recreate fusion or something. Oh wait, you're opposed to that. Why is that again?

  • so who is behind this seemingly amature rewrite?

    Mercury?

  • Greenpeace NZ

  • I'm not one to agree with those who jump on the "global warming" band wagon. The stats on Huntly might be damming, but it's doing a pretty good job of producing power. Personally I doubt wind turbines are going to meet the demands of places such as Auckland - needs something with greater potential!

  • Fracking brilliant.

  • The initial (Government) investment in Huntly back around 1979 means that the construction of generation is a sunk cost. It was unfortunately Genesis was handed Huntly when ECNZ was split, but someone had to take it!

The multitude of constraints on new generation construction make it inefficient (cost wise - with carbon costs factored in) over the next two decades, even if there were more streams/lakes to dam and hills to put windmills on, that wouldn't upset local iwi.

  • This video and the some of the following comments illustrate a high level of misunderstanding around New Zealand. Genesis Energy fails to make profits on par with Meridian due to their huge fuel bills - they would like to turn off Huntly like the rest of the country. This rash move would however cast the majority of the country (particularly Auckland where most of Huntly's power is distributed to) into darkness.

  • Thank you GP. There is no such thing as the perfect greenie people but do something, anything. this does not mean you need to sacrifice your lazy, selfish lifestyles. You will actually live a longer, happier and healthier life. Happy mothers day Ma!

  • This is SHIT! While you Robin Hoods of nature are scaling smoke stacks and wasting people's time, Huntly provides security of supply in this country! Why don't you propose a WORKABLE solution?! And I mean WORKABLE - none of this windmill rubbish that would generate 50MW across an area the size of Auckland, and only when it's windy! Don't like carbon emissions - might want to think NUCLEAR without freaking out for once!!!

  • Maaate viva la chernoble and millions of years of N waste, be great if we could store it at your place eh We got kiwis getting motors to run on water, so Im sure some smarty can find a way to clean the smoke stacks in the meantime, whatiya mean there is already a way to clean and filter the coal burning Huntly stack ? OH BUGGA that would cost Genesis some money lets just make the average kiwi spend money on new car exhausts - ( easier than getting Genisis to loose a little profit eh )

  • PART I

Out of the hundreds if not thousands of nuclear powerplants around the world that operate perfectly well, all you can think of is Chernobyl. ANY form of generation makes SOMEONE unhappy - coal gets greenies going, gas - supply issues, wind scares animals and farmers alike, hydro and geothermal has the Maori mafia protesting until they are bought off at unreasonable expense.

  • PART II

How about each household have their own little diesel generator that makes an amazing amount of noise, not to mention the emissions?! Or are you going to save the world and make the water powered engine available for everyone at acceptable prices? You are talking about costs - do you know that a huge proportion of household electricity load is actually water heating?

  • PART III

Solar water heating is available at around $5k-$8k over usual setups - yet I don't see many builders or developers putting it in, although there are definite benefits to be had (such as reduced electricity use and hence lower demand and bill). Why? Coz they are being tight just like everyone else around - because that $5k or what ever will come directly out of the bottom line, an expense that can easily be avoided. So if you are out to point fingers, why don't you find root cause first?

  • climate change is natural BUT we (humans) have sped it up drastically somebody needs to do something drastically to slow it down not by 2020 NOW or itll be to late even the damage down now is irreversiable but its gonna get worse

  • Genesis "Energy" actively destroys science (as does Greenpeace) when it says "energy = electricity". Electricity is but a form of energy, a carrier of energy. And Genesis generates only one type of electricity =Bulk-generated electricty. It also describes gas as energy, thereby confusing energy with its forms and omitting the atmosphere from the energy equation. Its original symbol of a thermal plantin its education module did not even have a chimney! google "bonusjoules' for much more.

  • I too know a bit about the power system and all generators provide security of supply, but should we further expose our beautiful country to any more pollution than we currently pump out by building more coal and gas plants?

  • New Zealand Energy demand peaks at over 6500MW, last i heard, Meridian had nothing like that much. (for that matter i do not think the sum of all green energy capacity ever does).

  • Genesis talk a good game but are they really investing in a diverse portfolio weighted towards renewables? Only one company is comitted to only building renewable generation, offsets the carbon emissions of current customers through generating more renewable energy over a year than is consumed, and is actively building renewable generation (Te Apiti, White Hills, and West Wind in Wellington) not just talking about it. That company is Meridian Energy.

  • Enough! I know the simple physics of NZ's power system. To phase out coal burning plant at Huntly NZ requires a further 700MW of plant (of any kind other than wind and over and above demand increase) to be built, since that isn't on the cards then attributing blame at Genesis is short sighted and pointless. If Kiwis want Huntly off the energy supply stack then they will have to pay at least 250% of their current energy costs to realise that in anything shorter than a decade.

  • SHAME ON YOU GENESIS. SHAME ON YOU *points finger*

  • I'd imagine there would be infinitely more whinging if electricity prices doubled overnight, than all this Huntly burning coal issue!!! It's always easier to call someone else greedy than to dig deep in your own pockets!

  • I think this video really clearly outlines what is happening. We may not think global warming is a threat right now, but what when the shorelines recede each year and houses, roads and beaches are underwater, when the ozone layer is completely gone so we all fry to death, when the many varieties of animals all die out? Genesis is just the start of a domino effect that will undoubtedly end in our extinction.

  • So Genesis doesnt put all their eggs in one basket like others do, i feel that this is excellent as they are exploring different ways of generating electricity for the country while still being able to maintain the demand by consumers and retailers.

  • Sure you can watch this video and read the comments and come to the conclusion that "Genesis [Energy] claims to be securing our future; in reality, it's posing a direct threat to it" or your can watch the original and take that, in my opinion, it was communicating the fact that [energy generation] diversity offers greater chance for sustained supply.

  • I love how this video exclaims that "Underneath the propaganda the truth is ugly", and i love how those who support this doctrine can be so easily rallied to a cause that has been presented in such a uninformed and bias way.

  • Muppets! Switch Huntly off and we'd have to conduct any debate on climate change by candle light.

  • Genesis claims to be securing our future; in reality, it's posing a direct threat to it with over 75 per cent of its power plants running on coal and gas. Huntly needs to be phased out and replaced with renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. There's no place for coal in New Zealand's future.

  • Hmmm candlelight. How romantic!

  • You'd have to be a halfwit to thinkswitching to meridian will help anything. All Meridian is doing is onselling the electricity that Genesis generates, cause Meridian don't produce enough electricity to supply all it's customers!!! What makes them worse it that they're making heaps more profit it than Genesis themselves do.

Way to go Greenpeace. You're a pretty bright bunch allright.

  • Yes of course, even if you switch to meridian you aren't ensured that you are getting 'green' energy BUT the point is using market forces! It means those who switch aren't endorsing the use of coal, oil and gas. If companies like Genesis can see the potential gain of thousands of customers who don't believe in burning fossil fuels, they might commit to changing their dirty ways!!!

  • Also because Genesis Energy is the key generator of Electricity in NZ, it wouldn't matter if every Genesis Customer left because a retailer can only provide the electricity (MW) that they generate to their customers. If they have more customers than what they provide to the grid they must buy wholesale electricity from the other retailers (e.g. Genesis Energy) so Genesis could still survive with no customers from Generation alone because they would simply increase their wholesale charge.

  • Genesis Energy generates electricity from thermal, wind, hydro, co-generation and coal. Genesis Energy does not make a huge profit, it may be the largest energy retailer, but does not take huge profit. Meridian Energy has just made net profit of 104.5 million for HALF a year where as Genesis Energy generated a net profit of 83.7 million for an entire year. Genesis Energy is a state owned enterprise and all profits are invested into establishing new ways to generate electricity.

  • As Meridian Energy generates all its energy from renewable sources, does this mean that renewable energy is far more profitable than dirty polluting coal?

  • Nope it means that it's much cheaper because its not reliable and wind is free, coal isn't. When there's no wind they wont work, and when there is too much wind the blades rotate inwards shutting down the turbines to prevent damage.

  • I didn't think Meridian Energy had many windfarms yet but was using hydro. If renewable energy is so much cheaper, then as Allegoricwolf suggests, then the sooner the Huntly powerstation can be phased out the better it will be for the economy.

  • To be honest I would have to agree there, but i would still suggest having Huntly available as a buffer/back up plant. What happens if there is to much/not enough wind or lake levels are low.

  • GreenPeace aren't a bunch of communists, why does it matter if Meridian are profiting from investing in renewable resources!?!?!?!??!!!

  • Also Genesis Energy is commited to securing supply for tommorow by starting today, so we generate more power than any other retailer from more sources because you are less likely to run out. Look at the crisis that occured with low rainfall which was a direct threat to our hydro-dams.

  • The Pukeko's were trained to do that by Mark Vettes from Animals on Q a world renown animal trainer

  • yea right, carbon emmisions dont relate to climate change, thearths been heating up and cooling down for forever, its been way hotter then it is now without carbon emissions. coal is pretty bad though. climate change im all for it, i live in windy, cold wellington nz.

  • I live in windy cold Wellington too and the last thing I want is for it to get even windier - one of the predicted effects of climate change for NZ!

  • Hahahahaha thats the coolest ad eva LOL

  • pukeko? that sounds like "my pussy" in Tagalog (Filipino) i know, that was random....

  • And just remember that when you turn on that light switch, telly or computer, that you are using electricity supplied by the national grid. Electricity that whether you are with Genesis Energy, Meridian or Mercury that none of them can guarantee you that the energy you consume is 'green' and can be seperated from other forms of generation.

  • Funny one.. :)

  • That was funny.

  • Too true - genesis need to get their act together, stop treating us all as fools, and take a responsible approach to sustainable power generation. Gas is for BBQ's. Go Greenpeace... thank you.

  • Great video. Climate change is likely to harm millions of people. Greenpeace could hardly be said to life-hating - campaigning to reduce life-harming pollution, environmental destruction and oppose nuclear weapons. It's a life-supporting organisation!

  • Hahaha

  • love you, greenpeace

  • Greenpeace still propogates visions of our climate as the enemy

"the threat of climate change" and confuses energy with the forms it takes ( in common with all the Bulk-generators of electricity and major fossil fuel companies)

"..half of the energy they supply"

Greenpeace's propaganda is as ugly as is possible. It suggests a hatred and/or fear of life and a denial of the Principle of the Conservation of Energy. In kindness Dave McArthur

  • Surely Greenpeace promotes life with it's opposition for life-damaging war and pollution. Dave - open your eyes.

  • Not when it frames its work in denials of the very essence of life and abuses vital tools such as the "energy","power" etc symbols - just as the Bulk-gen cos do. You have to open your eyes and see the big big picture.

  • Climate change IS a real threat, of course it has always been a natural occurence besides any levels of carbon emission and we see it as negative simply because it will harm human life - but when we see undeniable proof of human life acting as a catalyst for this change, and levels of carbon emissions part of causing that, who are you to call people looking for solutions (Greenpeace) a negative entity?

  • Climate change is the natural order & is a healthy process that enables life. Some people, eg greed-driven media and nuclear industry, abuse the "climate" + "change" symbols and image it as bad to promote their own short-term interests.

It is helpful to differentiate between climate change and a Human-induced Thermal Build-up on Earth's surface.

  • Your comment baffels and saddens me, Dave J Mcarthur.

"Greenpeace still propogates visions of our climate as the enemy"

"the threat of climate change" - Where, when? It seems as though you don't really know much about Greenpeace at all and are basing your opinions on your own nicely reframed versions of things you have heard/read. I'm sure if you did a little more homework you would discover that these people truly are aiming to help us all out.

  • All humans have the capacity to deny change (our mortality) and stewardship (responsibility for our actions. We create rationales to reduce the internal dissonance generated by the denial and this is revealed in our use of symbols. Environmental activists are not immune and may be extra vulnerable.

  • "It suggests a hatred and/or fear of life and a denial of the Principle of the Conservation of Energy." - What? Hatred and/or fear of life? I really cannot fathom what you are basing this on, please inform me as I would truly love to know. Greenpeace actively encourages conservation of energy and preservation/love of life.

Your views are extreme, Dave J Mcarthur. And totally unfounded. "You have to open your eyes and see the big picture."

  • Hi John. Yes my views are extreme in our unsustainable culture which believes humans can conserve energy. This is a denial of the Principle of the Conservation of Energy. Energy, by its very nature, is conserved. We can however conserve energy forms ie be stewards of fleeting forms and balances.

  • I agree with all of your replies, the way you justify/rationalize your statements is logical, but for the everyday person not reading so far into Greenpeace/Genesis's comments it is not reasonable. I still believe that your statement of "It suggests a hatred and/or fear of life" is a large exaggeration. Of course the climate naturally changes and life/death is a reaction. But the speed at which things are changing? Unnatural. Greenpeace does not have negative intentions/profits in mind.

  • Hi John NZ Bulk-gen cos alone have spent $10millons redefining "energy" this last decade. Their PR people target our subliminal primal response systems with great success - witness Electricity Reform legislation remains intact, demand:supply investment =$1:$100s, 99.9% of pop is now disenfranchised from Electricity Market and small scale generation potential severely suppressed.

Unfortunately Greenpeace has bought into this process with its choice of symbol uses. Think primal response!

  • Hi John again We all have a tendency to deny life/change/our mortality/the Conservation Principle. We all have a considerable talent for rationalising activities based on our fears/lack of love. I will put it this way: The person who loves life/change finds it an anathema to say climate change is bad and their healthy response is to be sceptical of those who say climate change is bad. They may be less sceptical of the idea of a Human-Induced Thermla Build-Up on Earth's surface.

  • Yup. Good on ya! I wonder how long it will take for them to use legal means to try and get this removed...? Switch to Meridian everyone.

  • Hi brrrrodie -if the PR guys for Genesis Energy are smart they will be forwarding the Greenpeace clip around the country as it is affectively an endorsement of their product = Bulk-generated electricity. The clip with its use of symbols helps reduce the popular awareness of valuable alternative resources such as home-scale generators. The adoption of these alternatives threaten company profits and its reason for existence.

  • Small scale renewable energy projects are the way to go - ranging from domestic through to community scale. I believe Greenpeace has been promoting this

  • Hi Ornot All energy is renewable."Renewable energy" is the stuff of charlatons down the centuries (perpetual motion machines, elxiors for immortality etc). Maybe you mean renewable resources? Very different. By adopting the language of Genesis et al Greenpeace destroys science and community/individual options. PS whats with the game-names on this site? Is it virtual (like renewable energy) or real (like renewable resources)? Is this site serious about the issue?

  • Good Job! they never put out the real truth. Love you Greenpeace.

  • Could have done without the bloody awful accent given to the pukeko.

  • I hate TV advertising. Its all just a pile of crap dreamed up by professional liars. This is a classic example of that.

  • Funny comment. The same 'professional liars' who dreamed up the original version of this ad "Lowe", have also worked on and executed campaigns for Greenpeace. Talk about picking and choosing, idealist idiots.

  • While I support a lot of what Greenpeace do, I also disagree with a lot of their policies and tactics. If they used the same company then that is unfortunate, but not necessarily unexpected. And it doesn't mean the message is any less valid.

  • Very good video... Companies are lying all the time about their real activities and, hopefully someone like you tell the truth! I was a Genesis customer... I am so happy to have shifted to Meridian

  • I'm a Greenpeace member because i believe we need a passionate and organised advocate for the environment. But sometimes i do wonder about the approach. What we need to do is offer solutions that could actually deal with the problem. I'd suggest reading these two proposals: one is mine and available at my blog sustento at wordpress. and another is available at kyoto2 dot org.

  • Ah yes they are "increasing the threat of climate change" ... 60 cm in 100 years ... ooh scary.

  • Oh yea sweet as, we'll just turn off Huntly Power station and all the other Genesis plants around the country. No one will give a shit if half the fuckin' north island will have no power dumbasses! But ok fair enough, they may put out a few carbon dioxide molecules into the air, so lets go nuclear! That doesn't give off any CO2. Oh wait I forgot Greenpeace doesn't want that either! And Maori land owners don't want windfarms!Might as well go back to the stoneage. Dumb as man, dumb!

  • Now now "japtrip", no need to throw a tanty.

  • Dont worry about all the miners and there families. Where did you get your power from to use your computer? It wasnt from Wind farms

  • Renewable energy is the second fastest growing industry in New Zealand- there'll be plenty of jobs. or of course we could just stick with the coal mining and all be dead or homeless from the effects of climate change anyway?

  • lol that is funny ... 2 bad i have acess to the actual Pukeko

  • Nearly a good idea lads. Unfortunately, you have misquoted the ad; it doesn't "claim that getting energy from different sources ensures sustainability". It claims it ensures reliability, which is a good point aimed accurately against many renewable energy sources. Hey, I'm in Greenpeace and have no problem with your idea, but if you're going to complain you need to get it right if you want to make a point that sticks. I'm afraid that this makes you look untruthful, which is not so good...

  • i put this on my bebo and evri1 shud do the same

i got the email askin ta spread this as much as possible so evri1 do the same!

  • nice stuff greenpeace, loving it.. keep it pure, chur!

Matty stick with yr vid games and comics ya nerd.. let us with intelligence worry about the important stuff ay.

  • great work as always greenpeace

  • Great Stuff!! The truth is always dirty (who believes real ads these days?!) :O

  • Truth is a matter of perspective! No lights without Huntly is also the TRUTH!

  • Genesis Energy ROCKS!

One day I am going to put up a powerplant in Huntly too so all you Greenpeace fuckers can choke on the mess you've created and not stopped like you claim

  • Well technically speaking, we'd all be choking on the mess YOU have created since it was YOUR bright idea to construct another power plant run by coal.

    Well done, dick.

  • Yeah your children and family can choke on the mess too you grubby little dog, assuming you're intelligent enough to even run a powerplant.

  • B*rstards!

  • If you're a Kiwi check out the Greenpeace site to switch to clean energy and shove it up Genesis, the dirty sneaky little f**kers! Another great media piece from Greenpeace! Thanks guys! The voice over is classic! Some top humour to get a serious message across.

  • LOL! Do you even know how the energy industry works?! If you are with Meridian it doesn't mean that your electricity actually comes from their power stations, especially up in the northern North Island.

  • Informative.....interesting.Jake

  • Great clip! The voice on the overdub is hillarious! I mean really!
