Fantastic! I've always thought that Pavarotti had some spinto tendencies, it might just be the recording but I found that his voice didn't quite have the brightness/cut of a lyric. Then again, it's rare a voice ever falls exactly into a specific category... Either way, excellent performance.
This aria is one of my absolute favorites. Not only is Pavarotti fabulous here, but the tune is so happy and graceful, and the melody is so charming and light, it makes me want to dance even though I hate dancing! Meraviglioso!
In my opinion his renditions were always the best. His Cs, there's something abt them that scream, lyric, easy for him, but manly. You could tell it was easy, but it had a virile powerful quality. I love being a tenor =)
I know this song is known for it's 9 high Cs and everyone loves it for it(myself included!!) but from from 0:46 - 1:03 in my opinion is simply haunting and beautiful.
I have heard the maestro several times live.. He had a lirico spinto voice that was a large round tenor sound.. In Rigoletto, you NEVER had trouble hearing him, fabulous sound. Fabulous. and he had the top notes too! He sang all the light high stuff at first, and did not avoid high D's at all.. because he had them.
I hate how people dis Pavarotti, almost just because he is considered the greatest tenor. His diction is fine, and his voice is exhilarating. so stop frickin hating!!!!
Yup, definitely prefer Florez. The notes at the top for Pavarotti are pretty..but so tense! You can tell he's straining by how the next note after every c sounds - almost like a glottal stop.
@incredulousG3 Not at all. It is covered and very well focused. No glottal stops. As for Florez, he has a much lighter voice. That voice is made for Rossini, Donizetti and Mozart, but not for Verdi or verismo.
Pavarotti was able to sing a wider range of operas because the voice is a lirico-spinto.
And more- if you really want to compare , go to the commercial recording of Pavarotti with Bonynge on DECCA.
I'm french but we don't have to care his french way of singing, it's so good to hear such a voice in that aria ! Always amazing !! Pavarotti forever !
Well when you're an opera/ classical music singer, being able to enunciate languages like german, english, french, latin, italian etc is VERY important! Some places will probably boo you for poor pronunciation throughout!
Oh dear, maybe, foreign languages were not Signore Pavarotti´s field of excellency. Can´t we just listen and admire his voice dancing along this melody?
There is an Italian recording, "Amici miei, quel (?) allegro giorno". I don´t understand very much of the lyrics, but listening, I imagine a bright young gentleman meeting his friends for a ball, leading his young lady to dance, easily, elegantly - well, in countless movies we see it, and he sings it.
The french is not the point - it's the music! Pavarotti is not famous for being a good french speaker!!!!! He is famous for having the greatest voice and technique we have ever been lucky enough to hear!!!!!
There are any number of answers to the question, what kind of person would comment on the French pronunciation of a tenor who can sing like this, but since there may be young children out there reading this, let's just say only a very very silly person. I mean, it's not like we have a lot of singers running around today who can do this, is it? In the music world "Luciano" is an adjective, and it means supreme and flawless vocalism. Basta.
@8070jack The French and Francophiles are a unique breed :-)) What counts is perfect prononciation, so what if the voice is mundane and boring as long as it's perfect French, Vive La France !! XD Luciano's French is just fine, even I can understand the words and I am not French (merci mon dieu!) Also consider legions on non-Italian native singers who butcher Italian opera on all the great stages everywhere :-)

@jwhitaker26 What a silly comment. Florez cheated? By the same token I could say Pavarotti 'cheated' since HIS high C wasn't as big as say, Lauri Volpi's.

well, I think that's a little unfair given the poor tone quality compared to the excellent recording quality Florez can deal with today! Whereas doubtlessly JDF is today's reference, the interesting question when it comes to the 60s-80s is: Kraus or Pavarotti? Pav had the prettiest voice, Kraus the ultimalte nobility and technical skills, if you ask me. But lucky us that finally Florez came along. He is quite a miracle of a nowadays singer...
@jrjorgensen2519 Larry's a great guy and Iove his voice, but neither he or Florez is Pavarotti. Yes, they are one fach lighter, but they simply don't have the excitement or core to their sound that Pav had.
@QuiRan82 - In my humble opinion, neither can be compared. Florez is a tenore di grazia, or rather more. Pavarotti was a spinto and had a bigger voice. Florez has unearthed Rossini operas that Pavarotti would never have attempted, and rightfully so. I loved Pavarotti's voice, but certainly NOT the obese clown he became as the years wore on. Florez is a different singer altogether, and a much rarer one. Also, I prefer Kraus and Gedda to Pavarotti anyway.
@Zva26 As has been the case with many tenors, out of boredom, he ventured into rep that was WAY too big for him (Radames, Calaf, RIccardo, etc). Pav was a light-lyric to Florez's leggiero - very similar. Pav had a similar range but with more color to his voice. Being generous, one could call Pavarotti a full-lyric, but never a spinto. And calling Florez more rare? No one has come close to replacing Pav yet. . . it just happens no one likes Rossini enough to endure it with bad tenors.
The thing about Pavarotti is that he threw those high C's as the most natural thing in the world. With every other tenor you can feel the effort. The notes just flow as easily as if he were singing twinkle twinkle little star in the shower.
@mauriciomille yeah i think he made his best to sing it in french. it's widely known though that the maestro wasn't very skilled with languages.. of course, that's not to discredit his amazing talent and contribution to the opera world. singing in french, especially in opera, however, is hard enough already. lol you almost have to find which words to sing with french inflections and which ones to sing with italian inflection so that it all sounds sort of clear. lol it's really confusing. hahaha
Pava is unfrickinbelievable! But what's up with Bonynge? Did he do a line of coke before conducting this aria or what? It's like he's trying to race Pavarotti to the end. Bonynge usually does a better job...but this is pretty sloppy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

Divino, maestro insuperabile. Questi 9 do di petto da brividi!

giancoclub 2 years ago
Credo di no.

D'accordo. Evviva Luciano!

Devo dire che secondo me i Do di Kraus non sono così perfetti tecnicamente. Li trovo un po' "tirati". Pavarotti, d'altro canto: meraviglioso!
nisticom 2 years ago
31122051 2 years ago
nisticom 2 years ago
31122051 2 years ago
Ottima tecnica, certo. Ma perfetta proprio no...
nisticom 2 years ago
Nessuno è mai perfetto. Saluti.

Sono daccordo. Comunque amo molto Kraus. Ricambio i saluti.

Pridirector 2 years ago

I read in "Great Singers on Great Singing" that Pavarotti had a cold for his Met debut, and the audience still went wild. Great to hear this!!!

Unbelievable....I have a few complete operas of Pavoratti from the '70's. Does anyone know if they are of any value?

They would be worth a million dollars for every lang play record, if the were not available3 on CD.
