Pardus is one of the few distros that will not let you set up your wifi. It forces you to install to hd. For that reason I won't be trying it. This is the biggest let down of all the distros I have tried. I look forward to the next one where it might allow you to install your wifi...
I couldn't find Banshee when I searched but I get just over 4000 apps for download when l look. Apparently it is important to run the updater intermediately after installing as this also affects the number of apps seen in the package manager. I have recently dropped Ubuntu and am very happy with Pardus.
Sorry for all the posts but can you describe what spec you have allocated to your virtual machine? You should have it set to at least 256 on graphics and 512-1GB of ram.
I think in future you should find another way to record your desktop becuase that process is clearly eating all of your resources.. Pardus flies on my Desktop with Quad Core, It also flies on my Netbook which has an Atom and ION graphics, It also flies on my old HP laptop which is 1.8GHZ dual core with Nvida Graphics and 2GB of ram..
I'm not surprised it took that long for you, everything you do seems to take an age.. I mean, it took you a mammoth 7 minutes to get through the initial setup screen!!! That takes me all of 3 seconds.
Hi, nice review. I've used Pardus before and it is very well done, and not in the least bit laggy. It was probably the virtual machine. Anyhow, i was wondering what software you use to record your screen. I too am using zorin os (core 5) and have been unable to find a decent program from the software center. If you could recommend something i would really appreciate it.
@borderlandsboy RecordItNow works well. You can choose different back-ends such as: RecordMyDesktop, ffmpeg-recorder, or just "screenshot." For some reason though, , the tooltip text doesn't show up in Ubuntu-based Gnome distros. The tooltip background and text are black on black... not easy to read.
i have 1.2 gigabites of ram and pardus run amaizing is my best experience of kde mayor of time i will use gnome but with Pardus is and amazing experience on KDE intregation ilove Pardus
Zorin looks better. This one seems a bit laggy. It may look nice, but it is not clean . Too much things in the desktop. Zorin looks clean and simple. Also, liked the intro music!
@Nazmus1992 If this review of Pardus seems a LITTLE BIT laggy to you, I'd hate to see how slow your installed OS is. In my perspective, Pardus is awfully, cripplingly slow in this review. I'd never use it if it were that slow on my machine. Who would?
Pardus can also be clean and simple. You can choose that at set-up.
@Nazmus1992 I currently use Windows 7. But as a student studying Computer Engineering, linux is necessary. I just want something that works. I do not need extra things or eye candy. I want to get my work done as fast as possible, with a clean, easy to understand, user interface. Zorin does a good job above all other versions.
But it is because of you I learned of zorin. Thanks for that. I was using ubuntu, but your video made me switch to this linux OS. Windows 7 is still my primary OS, though.
Pardus has a lot of very passionate fans! I'm fairly new to Linux and couldn't really give an opinion beyond - it just feels right for me. The grammar issues you note do detract from the professional appearance; but, Pardus was developed in Turkey and the translations into other languages is all done by volunteers. It was originally based loosely on Gentoo, but that was abandoned early and Pardus was built from scratch.
@tostoday Definitely. I tried out several distros a year ago, many of which are very user friendly. While Pardus is my own choice, I would also recommend Mint, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, Pinguy or Macpup. The biggest problem for a newbie is the proprietary drivers issue. Many distros offer only the open source drivers. If they don't work for you, you have to figure how to install the proprietary drivers yourself. Pardus, Mint, and PCLinuxOS offered the easiest solution to this problem.
@pirbird14 Another thing Pardus does for new users is give you the option to install proprietary drivers during the install process and when the system starts, your drivers are installed and ready to go. Also there's no need to edit the resolution of the Plymouth boot screen. In other Distros you have to go into the options and reset the resolution after you install proprietary drivers... You just don't have to in Pardus, it does the work for you.
If I install Pardus 2011 as a single operating system in a harddrive it take about same time as Ubuntu 10.10
And its very important t to run a pisi/package manager update first thing after the installtion to recive all avaible software. As you could see in this review he forgot to do that, thats the reason it was so few options.
In my opinion Pardus is among the best Linux distributions if do a real installation.
Thank you for the review, please don't think I'm trying to criticize, I'm not. You have your opinion as to what the best Linux OS is for new users and I respect that, I disagree but that's just my opinion and in no way am I trying to knock yours. I look forward to your next review. :)
Also, Pardus isn't based off of Ubuntu or any other Linux Distro. It is independent, built from the ground up and has everything you need right out of the box, with new software being added to the repos every day now.
I use Pardus 2011 on 1gb ram on a dual core laptop and it runs great.......The most stable OS I've ever used.
I notice you mention no Banshee.....This is KDE so if you want Banshee stick with Ubuntu....I think the repos are fine. Plenty of quality software to choose from.
As for the software, remember that you chose not to check for updates. There are over 4,000 packages now. Still not a lot but much more than 900. If something you'd like is not in the repo, you can file a bug and a dev will get around to packaging it. If you don't want to wait, there are community repos by members of the community who will gladly help package something you need. The community isn't very big yet but it's very helpful.
Thanks for the review! Please do try it as a real installation. The VM doesn't seem to appreciate Pardus at all, which is a shame. It's been snappy for me and it boots faster than any other distro I've tried, thanks to Murdur. (I know, what a name! lol) It's very stable and easy to use.
OK, After watching this review I gotta say... I've been using Pardus on my mechine for over a month and I have no idea why it's running so slow for you. I have it running on: Phenom550 @ 3.5Ghz, 3Gb memory DDR2 and it's lightning fast. I honestly think you are having problems with this running on a virtual machine.. I know for a fact, if you installed this to replace that Zorin OS you would be much happier with Pardus then you'd be with Zorin. Pardus isn't heavy on resources what to ever.
@tostoday You should have run the update, I have over 4000 packages in my repositories. I disagree about migration to Zorin from Windows tho, Pardus more out of the box features than Zorin has and in Pardus, you get full multimedia support with editing tools. You dont get a good office suit in Zorin and you dont get tools to edit movies and music like you do with Pardus. Zorin looks and acts like Windows, but that's the only advantage.Libra Office is better than Open Office and you get paint. =)
The slowness of the installation must be from using the virtual machine, from instal cd to working OS usually only takes about 15 minutes on my computer. Either you're running a very slow outdated system or your system cant run a virtual machine very well. (Not a criticism, just the truth.) You should try installing it as a fresh install straight to the hard drive. 15 minutes is all it takes.
Nice review. Pardus really does suck in a virtual machine, but it's just gorgeous on native hardware. If you've seen my review, you know that this is my favourite KDE distro...even though it doesn't have KDE 4.6! Keep making the videos...and I'll catch you later. :-)
