The ID collar is a good idea but to be extra safe you can get one of those sub-dermal ID tags that go under the skin. IF your dog winds up at the pound, one of the first things they do is scan for one of those tags which will tell them who the owner is and how to contact. Sub-dermal tags will run you about $75 installed, but they're an iron-clad guarantee. Someone can remove a dog's collar, they'll have a tougher tag removing an implanted ID.
