for a beginner sidearm what would you recommend? i am looking to spend about 300-350 tops. i was looking at the new Smith & Wesson Sigma SW9VE 9 mm Double-Action. what do you think?
i really think glock is the very best u can buy for your money, HK might be better, but only a bit better for ALOT MORE...
glocks are the AK-47 of the handgun world as far as i'm concerned, but AK did get the number one of the top 10 combat rifles award on the military channel, not sure where glock ranks, would have liked to see that ranking show
LOL, check out what i just found:
"American Rifleman's Top 10 Handguns" - old school ranking
@bisquik3006 of course the best listing is not here at american rifleman, it adds points for historical significance and service time, just like the military channel did with its listings... so it allows for relative comparison to time of invention and survivability into the future, but obviously the newer stuff is better, has been for a long time... simple fire before failure rates are the proof
@glorp896 I agree with the AK comparison, and I compare both to the Chevy 350. They are all great to the untrained, but not the best at anything, and not even close. I prefer a 1911, H&K, FN, Beretta, and M&P over a Glock. Deep down being from Kansas, it's wheel gun or nothing if I had to pick just one. All "normal" automatic rounds are soft. I've never met anyone that survived a .44 mag round. I know a few that have survived the .45acp.
@bisquik3006 HK i understand, FN also might be better, not sure of your other two... and of course magnum is the supreme load, even +P rounds don't catch up in terms of ballistics and foot pounds... and revolvers are actually more reliable than semis... but 6 shots? would u rather shoot somebody 19 times or 6? more holes sounds better for dying. ;)
thinking of the springfiled 9mm, 19+1 actually
of course a shot gun is best for killing folks... like the one in TREMORS?! 8 gauge!
@glorp896 R8's are .357mag, same as the TRR8. No M60. The government dumped them in the 90's. M240 replaced it. M2 is my favorite weapon of all. I wish I could afford one, even though I couldn't afford to shoot it. I am lucky, I'm still breathing.
@bisquik3006 right, should have remembered that about the M-60 and your timeline of service...
M2 gets the top spot in the military channel top 10 machine gun show... i kind of figured u might be lucky as to being a marine and in that time range u MUST have serviced in active combat duty...
u one of these suffering pups, or u at peace with the violence and death? i mean if u sign up for such a thing u must think u'd like it? maybe? or do all those kid dreams quickly fade away?
@glorp896 I was 28 when I went to boot. I understood the reality of everything. I hope the military channel had the M2 as number one. I can't think of too many guns that would bout perform her.
@bisquik3006 yes, number one for ma deuce... the minigun was on the list and of course would be far better for killing a mass of people - .50 cal is better for penetrating armor and vehicles... whats funny about the mini gun is that the 7.62mm is given this name because all other models are higher calibers of this GE "gatling gun"
- hey, when the rage zombie apocalypse happens do u think your marine training and service will give u a massive edge? ;)
my favorite zombie flick, and i've seen a bunch, is DAWN OF THE DEAD (remake, 2004 directors cut with more character development), it was the highest budget zombie flick until ZOMBIELAND, which is a fine Zomedy but SAUN OF THE DEAD still sets the standard for this particular zombie genre...
28 days later is the best for fast zombies, or even 28 weeks later is better i think...
@bisquik3006 if i remember correctly i'm thinking 29 was or is the max age for starting off, true?
i also saw many examples of contract signing bonuses going higher and higher and many enticements to get people into the IRAQ war... what got u in at such a late age? already in the military and moved up to marines or u just did your 4 years? - i was never in the military, my dad was a dentist in the navy for over 20 years, got a medal for being part of the cuban missle crisis...
@glorp896 The age limit is 27 I believe. I signed up at 27, but didn't ship out until I was 28. I didn't want my grandkids to ask me one day "Grandpa, why weren't you in the war", and my reply would have been because I didn't have to.
@bisquik3006 it was 29 for something else, but i heard they extended this to older as to shortage... so its good the marines have higher standards, keeping the folks young, fresh and elite... its good we didn't have to, VIETNAM was a huge waste, we couldn't even get a partial victory like we did with korea, which by comparison was a HUGE victory for the south... at least vietnam didn't turn out nearly as bad as north korea!
and we are getting our victory anyway - cheaper NIKEs ;)
@bisquik3006 the oil war is FAR more important than the rice war... oil really is a great reason to go to war; is right after a very short list:
water, air, food - oil really could be in the top 5 and of course is part and parcel to the first few as to delivery, processing...
u were not a waste, getting rid of Hussein alone was good enough reason - lets just hope we insure another one doesn't creep up - Iraq really could be the precedent for the ARAB SPRING... a real influence
@bisquik my cousin is in ACT OF VALOR, a navy seal... was on fox news many months ago talking about training seals... apparently he is not active in covert operations! on TV, training and in movies?!
i ran with his brother once, as i was a long distance runner, and his brother had LOADS of wind, his dad, my uncle, was a marathoner - lends credence to my other cousin being a Seal and he says his brother could have made it NO DOUBT... that would have been NEATO, two brother seals!
how much was that light?

I just don't like the boxy polymer guns, but that's just me. I do like how you can rave before you peel someones cap back.

@glorp896 Well my friend, I'm a Marine. One shot one kill. Plus my R8 packs 8 shots in a wheel gun. "It's not how long you talk, it's what you say".

@bisquik3006 R8's are made .222 through .50, which do u have?
guess u got to shoot an m-60? and M2? lucky u, or i guess i shouldn't say that, no one is drafted as a marine ;)
