Yeeeeew! Just noticed Mike Stewart is in this vid. For those who don't know he is a legendary pioneer bodyboarder, kind of like the Tony Hawk of the lidding world.
I mainly surf and bodyboard but I will occasionally go out to the local bodysurfing break (City Beach, Perth) for a few waves and it is great fun. You get so deep in the barrels and it takes a lot of skill to get in the right spot on the wave and have the right technique to keep your speed up and in control. Mad respect to these guys charging massive waves with serious consequences!!
Some people thing bodysurf is not a sport... well bodysurf is the coolest sport I have ever seen...BodyBoard it´s cool but bodysurf has style men so it´s is totally AWESOME
I'm a runner and I think walking is gay. People who walk on the streets are obviously faggots who are not skilled and fit enough to run. Running is for real men, not that crappy walking bullshit.

I body surfed pipeline feb 1981. All I can say is wow!!! It was so frikin scary and fun and just a real rush. Felt like I was fighting for my life. Best rides ever. Hit the reef and got a little bloody but it was so worth it that I did it a couple more times! Some weak swimming guys thought if I could do it so could they. LOL had to go out and help em in. Not bad for a haole girl.

I LOVE bodysurfing - always have. And I'm damn good at it. but what I disagree with is notoriety, crowds, noise, publicity and chaos. well maybe the kin d iof chaos you get in a wipeout. but i can totally do wihout all the music and people. @spookcow Agree. I surfed religiously from the age of 17-23...and one year out of nowhere I started body-surfing. Did it for about a year and eventually went back to surfing. Body-surfing is pure. You get a huge sense of accomplishment from surfing waves without the use of a man-made medium like a surfboard. It's also a lot like skydiving (I have close to 600 jumps) in that you just float on the wave like you do on air. Very cool stuff.
There's a lot a negative and positive comments here. All I can say is, I surf and I bodysurf. Body wompin' is the first thing I did when I was a kid and it helped me become a strong swimmer and learn about ocean conditions and such. To this day, once in a while, I like to leave the board on the beach and just bodysurf. Either way, as long as your riding waves for the stoke it doesn't matter what your doing, its all good.
@ZoojerZ I've taught my girlfriends 7 & 9 yo girls a bunch about the ocean from bdywomping. These fueltv watching posers probably haven't been in the middle of any 2-3 or 6-8 foot waves, but they have watched them on tv...or at least till mommy calls them upstairs for dinner.
this is a good way to look at it, i am a bodyboarder, but i bodysurf, ALOT, this is exactly how you come to know the waters of the ocean, you don't need a board to learn how waves function, in fact, you become a better wave rider if you can bodysurf well....i have friends that are sponsored surfers, it gets over head high they freak, because they loose their board, its like a blanket of security, take that away, they basically know nothing about the ocean....

hmm. That is true, but the technique is harder to be good at than you think. Sure its simple concept, but u need to be really good at judging waves, knowing when to lean forward, fall back, or cling to the face etc. Because when bodysurfing, details like that make all the difference. You have less margin for error while bodysurfing.

Theres a niiice reef break near my house thats like sooo cool to bodysurf. When bodysurfing, Waves feel bit bigger and its excellent excersize.Just pitty i dont know any other bodysurfers. And it gets lame after a while when all other surfers think ur drowning cause u dont have a board.

Wow. All this debate over whose sport is better. I love to surf (usually ocean beach sf) but on bigger days I'll take out the sponge; mostly because I'm not good enough to be out there on bigger days and also because it's easier to get out and ride. But either way I'm out there riding waves, and anyone who has done that knows that the feeling of riding a wave is completely unique. Great vid too.

So Body surfing is really FUN,but trying to make into some sort of professional, competitive thing I think is completely LAME, and essentially the absolute OPPOSITE of what it's really about. Some of these guys remind me of gaming computer people with all their fancy lights and bells and whistles and gizmos.. you can totally TEL, they're usually boa rd surfers the way they're spinning around and trying to hotdog it. nah.. I'll take a quite beach on me own any day. the music is garbage too

@spookcow Agree. I surfed religiously from the age of 17-23...and one year out of nowhere I started body-surfing. Did it for about a year and eventually went back to surfing. Body-surfing is pure. You get a huge sense of accomplishment from surfing waves without the use of a man-made medium like a surfboard. It's also a lot like skydiving (I have close to 600 jumps) in that you just float on the wave like you do on air. Very cool stuff.

There's a lot a negative and positive comments here. All I can say is, I surf and I bodysurf. Body wompin' is the first thing I did when I was a kid and it helped me become a strong swimmer and learn about ocean conditions and such. To this day, once in a while, I like to leave the board on the beach and just bodysurf. Either way, as long as your riding waves for the stoke it doesn't matter what your doing, its all good.

this is a good way to look at it, i am a bodyboarder, but i bodysurf, ALOT, this is exactly how you come to know the waters of the ocean, you don't need a board to learn how waves function, in fact, you become a better wave rider if you can bodysurf well....i have friends that are sponsored surfers, it gets over head high they freak, because they loose their board, its like a blanket of security, take that away, they basically know nothing about the ocean....

hmm. That is true, but the technique is harder to be good at than you think. Sure its simple concept, but u need to be really good at judging waves, knowing when to lean forward, fall back, or cling to the face etc. Because when bodysurfing, details like that make all the difference. You have less margin for error while bodysurfing.

bodysurfing is so cool. when i started i got a 'hand gun' planing surface. But after using it a few times i realised its more fun without it. I dont like shorebreaks though. And im afraid of hitting sand :(
Theres a niiice reef break near my house thats like sooo cool to bodysurf. When bodysurfing, Waves feel bit bigger and its excellent excersize.Just pitty i dont know any other bodysurfers. And it gets lame after a while when all other surfers think ur drowning cause u dont have a board.

Wow. All this debate over whose sport is better. I love to surf (usually ocean beach sf) but on bigger days I'll take out the sponge; mostly because I'm not good enough to be out there on bigger days and also because it's easier to get out and ride. But either way I'm out there riding waves, and anyone who has done that knows that the feeling of riding a wave is completely unique. Great vid too.
