Earthbound was ignored because it was a somewhat late SNES release, it had a weird marketing campaign (the game stinks...?) and the graphics, sound, and gameplay weren't anything cutting edge for the time. All these things seem to be necessary for success, and Earthbound was like a mercy release on Nintendo's part. If only we knew how lucky we were to get even the 2nd game...
