  • Pity that good musicians ashamed to play live because Ian could not sing

  • Manchester RULES!

  • この歌もいいね\(^o^)/

  • Yeah...but what happened when Browny swaggered off into the crowd?

  • Alan Wren (Reni) is not a smack head!!

He's perfectly fine & still to be seen round the chorlton area of manchester.

Saw his THE RUB, challenging...but still great to see him live after the Roses.

Have dat tapes of the Manc show & KTWWH.

Roses will always be my fave band, saw em three times...Browno cant sing live.

Belfast 1990 maysfield centre & 1987 international in May ish he sounded great. Ive heard 80 Roses bootlegs & thems the best for vox.

    Best voice in manchester ?

  • reni... one of the greatest drummers ever!! we want ya back !!!!!

  • Ian brown looks fucking lush!! Mmm mm mmmm!! I heard he just got divorced, ian, anytim ya want me, anytime at all....

  • Squire was starting in on the on the Zep trip, but they still look damn cool

  • 2 dislikes i take it jedward clicked the link by accident

  • @XtalGameVids Mother FUCK Jedward lol!

  • @XtalGameVids ha,ha,ha - nice one!

  • the roses by any other name would sound as sweet! one of the best bands to play live i have ever seen, id never heard of them, but they gobsmacked me they were so great- this vid shows the pure musical talent they had, they were gifted! and i remember now why i used to fancy ian brown- werent he lovely, a right fit bloke!

  • The best band that ever graced the planet, there are others that come near, but the roses do it for me, pure class

  • Not their greatest song but the music is just sublime....

  • I always loved listening to the stone roses. Good memories. They should have been bigger than what they were.

  • @auratone25 maybe - still Channel 4 & HMV in a nationwide survey even back in 1997 suggested their debut album was the best album of all time - not a bad accolade. The thing about most of the Madchester bands was that this movement happened all too quickly - and of course drugs, money and egos got in the way as per usual.

  • Always wanted Browny's barnet in this vid...homeboy always looked dope as fuck back then...

  • el bataco es impresionante !

    parece que estviese flotando !!

  • BTW - "LIVE" is a misnomer here. It is so from the first recording of the album/CD. None the less, I love it!

  • Seriously - what year is this??

  • yes, this is a prerecorded audio track for them to mime to, but does it sound different form the studio version? The tone of the guitar sounds dif to me.

  • I'm no drug I'm endorphin

  • At 3:08 John's guitar surrenders and decides to play itself... [as said before, this AINT live but it IS still funkin cool! Love the Roses.. respect!]

  • Ian is sexy. And John is sexy. And Reni is sexy. And Mani is sexy. And music is sexy. Sexiest sound in the world. Need more to say?

  • The Roses at their zenith. Such a shame they choose to have a 5 year break. They had the potential to be massive.

  • @oscarcanterbury They didn't choose it. They just couldn't get out of a terrible contract.

  • @oscarcanterbury They didn't "decide to have a 5 year break", they got stuck in a legal battle between Silvertone, Geffen and their daft manager Gareth Evans which took over 2 years to break out of. During this time they were not allowed to record or play live. Thanks go to Silvertone.

The momentum was long gone by the time they got out of that mess.

  • @MrThreshold2009 by "momentum" you mean they simply had run out of any good songs to write? It seems never to have returned after all even a cursory glance at the solo projects of John Squire would provide enough evidence.Mind you not as much of a come-down of that of Johnny Marr - WHAT happened to his talent after the break-up of the Smiths remains a mystery to all including himself!

  • @revol148 Second Coming has some great songs on it, they didn't run out of songs to write. Have you listened to some of the bootleg jams they did during that time, or some of the B sides from the singles off Second Coming, like Ride On? And Brown's done some great solo songs - Corpses for a start. Anyway, Reni was the real musical talent and it's such a shame he's not bothered doing anything after he quit.

  • @MrThreshold2009 really? - oh well I will have to dust off my cassette copy of the Second coming and try again.Do you mean the garage flowers demos tape? I heard it ages ago - I don't recall there being anything good on it.As for Ian Browns solo career - I would admit he has a few good tracks to his name spread over 3 albums - certainly more so than John Squire.Still as with Johnny Marr post-Smiths - I find it odd how serious talent (dare I say genius) can so readily vanish from some people.

  • @MrThreshold2009 Reni makes me laugh - BBC4 had a madchester night last thursday - he does a great interview.I can't vouch for his individual talent as together this band were so complete - they really needed each other. As for Mani - I think he suffered depression/heroin addiction in the mid 1990's - if he has been in any bands I have not heard of them.

  • @revol148 Mani joined Primal Scream after the Roses collapsed. The heroin/depression rumours circulated were about Reni, but never proven. I think you got the two mixed up there as I watched that and Reni never does interviews as he's highly elusive, Mani was always the amiable member of the Roses and that was him on the show.

Reni, as a drummer and musician, was stunningly accomplished. Almost unmatchable. Listen to Daybreak or watch the Blackpool Live DVD.

  • @MrThreshold2009 sorry - I've got Reni and Mani mixed up!

  • What year was this?

  • Brown's hair is amazing in this clip!

  • Comment removed

  • when it sounds the same as the album it aint live

  • reni and john are legends these monkeys cant do it live

  • one word! "COOL"

  • my ringing tone :D love it !

  • love to watch Reni on the drums :)

  • funky shite!!! :D

  • surprised noones stuck some united footage on a vid with this song on. seeing as its on a banner in the stretford end.

  • OOOHH pure quality!

  • I love how Reni just throws his drum sticks up into the air at the end.

  • That is soo not live! Tune though!

  • @TheSallyCinnamonOne I thought that. It sounds like only the guitar is live, which is a weird way to perform.

  • @TheSallyCinnamonOne

I think it's more of TOTP thing going on. Y'know, they just make all the right motions to coincide with the studio track.

  • Band that it never wants you to form again.

However, it is likely to go to see absolutely if it forms again.

  • "bag of heavy rock shite" - i love the beautiful simplicity and directness of youtube comments - makes up for all the negativity when you read gems like that. Class.

  • Is it just me ,or is Ian Brown the best fuckimg frontman since Johnny Rotten...?

  • @ucla4eva liam gallagher i think mate

  • OMG - this song was used for a cinnamon toast crunch commercial here in the U.S. I think someone ripped it off. Best Band ever! Saw them at the fillmore right before they broke up : (

  • @karlagmom was it? what year was that approx? I have searched thorough the commercials on youtube but can't find anything

  • the best band there ever was BAR NONE!!

  • Filmed in London for Jap telly April 90 .

Still the the most hypnotic band i've ever seen.

    Cheers.

  • For sure. Right up there with the doors as far as hypnotic goes.

  • shame they're miming but great

  • REFORM THE ROSES !

  • Does anyone have any idea about John's guitar?

It looks like Stratocaster + Jaguar...

  • its a custom jaguar with tons of modifications

  • Its a custom made jaguar. Guy in doncaster made him two of them, think he's called stuart palmer. Basically they were bass guitars cut down to a jaguar style body, jag necks stuck on them and pickups from gibson flying v. hope this helps

  • I've gotta find that jumper Reni's wearing.

  • Comment removed

  • @modernmod89 Is his family from Holland or something?

  • @modernmod89 Dude any luck finding that jumper?

  • @ckupc nah, ive found a couple close to it though, can send you the links if you want.

  • @modernmod89 Yeah would ya man? That would be cool!

  • great tune but it's not live

  • I would literally give my thumbs to have seen these lads live.

  • Take that annoying strobe effect off - its not on the original, grrr.

  • Is this a lip sync or is john squire and mani actually playing?

  • Imagine all those songs they would have made if they had never split :(

  • Memories of much loved madness...amazin live..and I still luv them today....thanx for this...yes the guitar here is very hard to play...wore my fingers out ha ha when learning it....

  • too bad this is miming, lol. this fucking song rocked my world... i remember buying the CD single... wowsers.

  • wreny is dam fine on that basic drum kit set up.

  • Reni. He's basically accepted as one of the most naturally gifted drummers ever. He usually did backing vocals on this track live.

  • I know he plays it the best.

  • quality !

  • Just an amazing song, great vibe, so damn catchy, one of the best Roses songs ever.

  • Show me your vision, your wild apparitioN

  • oh man what i would give to go back to the good old day!! they rock as good today as ever!X

  • johns giutar sounds class here.....

  • my first cassatte single, still got it

  • Mani and Reni never to be matched.

  • This is the one, this is the one I've waited for!

  • Heaven help me I LOVED this group!

  • Why would you feel horrible?! :))

Numer 2 is okay too. ;)

  • jhern0:

    Sure they can't! And they're my #ONE! :)

  • This is the missed moment. This is when they should have been making the second album. They had their own sound and should have ran with it. Unlucky.

  • Perfectly said. They were progressing on their older stuff with more of the psychedelic style. Squires guitar shines here more than any other song. This song is shit hard to play. Especially the solo.

  • For a start, not all but a lot of yank's don't get the Roses or the Manchester thing, and even though this was there last single i think they were looking and souding the coolest they ever looked.

  • english rose was were the name came from had nothing 2 do with gnr at all

  • Roses were never called English Rose, but your spot, the Roses had nothin to do with GnR.

  • guns and roses is boring knucklehead american rock cliches.

    rooooccckkk oooonnnnn dddduuuudddeeee!!!

    the roses changed everything,

  • Its such a shame that alot of people dont share this view...I DO

  • The stone roses changed the direction of music in england and had such a profound impact on all bands to follow. GnR was just another band in the u.s. and their front man, axle rose is f*ckEn stupid. Slash meant more to GnR than axle.

  • Why are you even bothering to talk about Guns and Roses. Axl is pathetic and Slash is a bog standard grossly overrated wanker of a guitarist.

There's only one band worthy of the word Roses in their name and that is this band.

Anybody who thinks that Slash is anything special needs to watch John Squire and needs to rethink their music tastes.

  • GnR weren't all bad. When they locked axle in a closet, the band improved. But it was late in their run and broke up afterwards. I sure wasn't comparing GnR favorably to The Stone Roses. Thats insane.

  • Well Yeah lol. I thought the Damned cover GnR did was spot on but mainly because Stradlyn sang that one haha. They're also one of those bands that often were so bad they were brilliant in some senses.

But anyway, enough about them cunts, this is meant to be comments about the Stone Roses haha.

  • squire as brilliant as he is,is just is a wannabe jimmy page mate, slash is unreal.

  • The band were so close knit on that first album you can hear so many influences in squires playing it brought out the best in Squire. The 2nd coming although a brilliant guitar album was of Squire trying to take control but his playing was still amazing not just a Page wanna be you can hear Hendrix, stones, cream and early fleetwood mac.

  • Total Bollocks mate. Slash is a bog standard blues guitarist who has never innovated his own style in the slightest and has no onstage dimena whatsoever and is basically just some div in a top hat.

Squire couldn't be more different to Jimmy Page. Page is an unashamedly sloppy guitarist who has wrote some of the greatest riffs ever but both in the Yardbirds and Led Zep has been about powerful stoppy-starty riffs. Squire's style has always been a more washy wah-wah one. Both two of the best.

  • Agree about Slash. Got footage of him on a John Lennon tribute show, and he looked totally lost having to play something melodic and clever. I have played guitar for 40 years. John Squire is inventive and melodic, which most modern guitarists are not in my opinion. Don't forget Alvin Lee, great blues guitarist !

  • i love reni's cool style spec at the start f this song lol

  • best rock band ever,,,,,,PERFECT.

  • GnR?! :O

    WTF?

How can that crappy sound even compare to that of the The Stone Roses?!

  • What the fuck have that bag of heavy rock shite Guns and Roses got in common with the Mighty Stone Roses apart from the word roses?

  • @Ordsall66 Perhaps the fact I love both bands :D

  • @Ordsall66 slash

  • @Ordsall66 you lookin to start something bitch

  • its mimed dude

  • GnR better than The Roses, fookin ludicrous statement.

  • LMFAO

Guns and Roses are far better than the Stone Roses? :P

That's the best laugh i've had in years.

  • this is britpop

    lol

  • behave

  • I love the Roses, but is this really a completely and truly live performance? because it sounds way too similar to the studio version... John Squire seemed to be playing that recording, note-for-note, and Ian sounded a bit different... anyone know the true story?

  • It's live, as in they're appearing live. Of course it's the backing track. Have you ever heard Ian Brown sing like that live?

I love the Roses may I add.

  • 'i love the Roses may i add' thats like applying body armour to stop you being thumbed down...i always do it man lol .There is something quite cool about his out of tune singing almost like hes defying a cliche of frontman.

  • @01stursa

when brown is on he can sing, he sounds amazing on the record, and his swagger and stage presence make him one of the best.

no other voice would fit the roses, his voice bleeds into the music

  • Massive massive tune

  • madchester! madchster!

  • john squire painted his kit,and manis bass!

  • no! he put all their instruments in a room and flung paint around the place! ;-)

  • no he designed them by using the type of art jackson pollock used to do(i suggest u look him up)hence the lyric"jackson pollock number 5"on the track going down, its very ignorant to suggest he flung paint on them m8

  • yeah I think you missed the.......forget it...your young I suppose..

  • nah it isnt because thats what he said he did, in interviews he's said this using jackson pollock influence but he still flung it about

  • You missed his point entirely, you dumb wanker.

  • Arrogant tosser. You missed the subtle message in his words. I suggest you look up how to deduct sentences properly.

  • such a bawbag.

  • No response but abuse? Shows your wrong you pathetic piece of shit. lol!

  • I love the symbolic by Ian Brown putting his hand up and showing one finger just to make his point while he sings "One love, we don't need another love - One love, one heart, one soul"

  • want a groove the band has going, in this track in particular! mani is so funky

  • fantastic video!!!

  • coolest band ever.

  • ok how good is this "live" performance..

    reni: the coolest drummer EVER

  • Awesome. All of them really are geniuses on their instrument. Even Ian with his voice.

But this is lip-singing unfortunately. :/

  • I couldn't agree more. People have a go at Browns singing but he has a lot of soul there. They wouldn't have been half as good without him.

  • fuckin yeah

  • reni wearing the hat defines reni, one of the best drummers ever.

  • Has there been any moment in the last 30 years without Reni wearing a hat?

  • sure. watch the elephant stone video.

  • how gives a fuck if its live or not, fuckin class

seen them 3 times, second coming tour, squire on guitar was mind blowing, and brown singing was great,i dont givea fuck anyway his presence is enough,no better frontman ever.

  • STONE ROSES RULES!!!!!!

  • which tv show is this? viva the stone roses

  • the word

  • their gear looks so cool painted like that.

  • sorry but it aint live

  • damn they are so good

  • all hail the King Monkey

  • One of thr best performances! shame it was the last! *****

  • playback

  • the guitars sound deffo live

  • Absolutely unbelievable in high quality!

    Up the Roses!!

  • playback?lily vanilly

  • last tv appearance as we new them.

  • if guitar, the the roses!

  • true musical artists. inspirational.

  • But not live...

  • One of the best intros ever - Squire on fire!

  • Just love that Fender Jaguar. Squire at its peak. Best Fucken gutiar Song . Too bad the solo was cut off.

  • it's not a jaguar.

cutom made with a Jazz Bass body, i think.

    I read it somewhere

  • Its a custom jaguar.
