  • I'm not into country but, I love this song!

  • wow...scary fucking silhouette at 0:23?

  • This is a great song; an all time classic hit. The video is amazing. The choreography, costumes and facial expressions are so good. An excellent time capsule of the late 1960s. Too bad we didn't see more of Bing Crosby in the begining as that week's host of "The Hollywood Palace".

  • I've loved this song since my childhood. Thanks for sharing this great performance of this song.

  • I love the clothes!!

  • Jeannie C. Riley is amazing. Have you really noticed her facial expressions and mannerisms? She has rare poise and powerful sex appeal.

  • what is Ms. Riley doing now a days?

  • @roaringwaterbay

Like many of the older Pop/Country artists, she's part of the Country Family Reunion appearing on RFDTV and in person on Country Music venues - older, more matronly, but still very pretty.

  • There were a lot of good songs in the late 50's and early 60's but unfortunately the British Invasion pushed a lot of the good performers out of the lime light and a lot went overseas. A lot of the songs had so much drug influence in them that (in my opinion) most were not worth listening to. Some like this one were good songs, but for some reason music started to decline in the late 60's.

  • IS THAT ROBERT REED IN THE BACK SITTING CENTER LEFT?

  • It's sad that country music doesn't get much appreciation outside of the Southern and rural United States and Canada's Prairie Provinces. A set of 500 45 records on eBay (from the '60s-'80s) sold for just $23.

  • One person is the Secretary of the Harper Valley PTA.

  • this song sums up an old saying!

    the truth always hurts!

    amen

  • Other means to a popular song in the 1960's included featuring heavy references to Louis Carroll's (sp?) "Alice in Wonderland"/"Through the Looking Glass", which is still popular in the 21st century. Examples include The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" and Jefferson Airplane's "Go Ask Alice". :-)

  • Pure classic! Still entertaining 40+ years after this clip was filmed. Back in the 1960s if you wanted to garantee a hit song, it seemed all you had to do was included the words "sock(ed) it to". There was this song, and who could forget Aretha Franklin's "R.E.S.P.E.C.T."? :-)

  • Its so good to be able to see the likes of Lynn Anderson, Jeannie C Riley etc singing here, us Britishers never got to see them over here, just heard the records thats all.

  • by far the greatist lyrics ever written !

  • Wow... its interesting when people post when they don't have a clue what they are talking about... just for the record Jeannie C had 9 songs cross over to the pop charts (yes.. thats nine) besides all the country hits... umm yep... sounds like a one hit wonder to me (lol)

  • Jeannie was a one hit wonder and turned out to be a huge druggie like Lynne Anderson. How do these people go from star status to crack heads that blow black guys on the street to support their drug useage ?

  • @WhiningWiccans

lynne anderson was not a one hit wonder I think

  • @grizzle100 Her second biggest hit only reached #63 on the Billboard Hot Hundred, so I guess you can call her a One Hit Wonder.

  • @SixtiesPopGold

Lynne Anderson is a well respected country singer, I am not sue your definition applies. The Beatles she wasn't but neither was she the bloke who sang Kung Fu fighting. Indeed she won a number of awards.

  • @SixtiesPopGold I'm only saying that she had one big hit.

  • @WhiningWiccans - Here are the facts: Jeannie's only #1 hit was Harper Valley PTA and it remained #1 on the country charts for an entire month. A "one hit wonder" she was not. Following Harper Valley, she enjoyed the success of five top 10 hits - "The Girl Most Likely" #6, "There Never Was a Time" #5, "Country Girl #7, "Oh Singer" #4, and "Good Enough To Be Your Wife" #7. She also recorded 8 singles that ranked in the Top 40. Drug addict, crack head, prostituting for drugs? Puh-leeeeze...

  • @stavo2165 But I guess you're referring to the Country charts. When it comes to Billboard Hot Hundred her second biggest hit only reached #55. Then she had three more, even smaller hits.

  • she mentions bridget jones. The shadow at the beginning is great -shame that didn't carry on

  • A hard lady to look squarely in the eyes!

  • Wow! This is so wonderful! Thanks for sharing it with us!

  • This clip is more imaginative than the 70s movie version of the song with Barbara Eden.!'"

  • This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing :)

  • Thanks- great video! Ron

  • That last line, "socked it to the Harper Valley PTA" puts it firmly in the Rowan and Martin Laugh-In era, doesn't it! Sock it to me, sock it to me!
