i like this optimus technology, i repaired a laptop that the graphics card went bad so the whole laptop was ruined, now these new optimus lappys come with intel integrated as well so when the nvidia gpu dies the laptop still works :)
Matt Webling - You're obvious an NVIDIOT Jewish dumbass, and your colleague belongs in my 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts, since he's an American citizen and he has a right to live the dream, we can give him the option and give him the usual Americunt Almost Unemployed Benefits.. We'll also throw him a nice pair of glasses and some hair regrowth medicine for your shiny head, you greaseball piece of shit.
It should be interesting to see how well Optimus works combined with Intel's sandy bridge; it should be even better energy savings and performance but I'm wondering how much of a difference it will be over the combination of Optimus with the previous generation processors
amazing technology, exactly what i was looking for and hoping someone would make! hope all your future video cards come with this. im waiting to buy an Ion 2 equipped laptop with this, cant wait!
0:32 "will be much smaller when it goes into a notebook written that book"

This technology takes advantage of having both an Nvidia discrete graphics, and intel integrated graphics.
When the nvidia software detects that additional horsepower from the GPU is no longer needed, it shuts off the card completely, and switches to the Intel IGP.
This technology is almost all software based, and can possibly allow implementation even on the desktop platform, to help achieve lower idle power.
very nice nvidia. While i like gpu turning off and on when needed, what i was more impressed was by being able to take the gpu out while system is still running. do that with current gpu's in desktops is impossible.
so does this mean if i buy a net book like this .. and in 4 years want a better GPU unit i can buy one and just stick it in and install new drivers and it will work ?
Most likely not, laptops and netbooks with dedicated graphics are not hard to find now days especially ones that allow you to "replace" the GPU, BUT the thing is, finding a new GPU to stick in there will be a task in its own effort. I dont ever think laptop or Mobile GPU's will ever become something the average or even Enthusiast will ever buy. Because most avid gamers would much rather buy top of the line equipment then try and get a year or two more out of current gen stuff its not likely

Great idea, I'm really impressed with this..
But i hope the system or mechanism for appropriate graphics switching is pretty foolproof.

Cool. But could you in future show the graphics app running without the GPU inserted?
That would show the fallback to the on-board gfx and the associated performance drop.
Great vid, it certainly is strange to see a whole section of a computer motherboard system ripped out whilst running!

Give us too see how it's work without GPU. Or this experiment isn't complete.:P
But its nice to see working this technology in action, thanks!
P.S. Great, now I can use this vid to show that mess on my working table is normal! :P

I'm pretty sure I read that if they start an application where it expects the discrete GPU to turn on, the computer crashes.
