To everyone that has posted a comment on these videos, we as families, of those who were lost in the crash would appreciate kind words for all concerned, who might or might not be involved with this horrific day, back in 1999.
Though we do appreciate "Swede" posting, keeping their memories alive, please be considerate in your remarks in the future...
Thank you,

ITs not so much me i hope there is an afterlife for its men like this, These men were apart of a MEU, means they stayed ready at all times to deploy anywhere in a very small amount of time. These are the guys who respond to hostage chrisis's and other situations that require a quick response assault team. They spent there lives training and sacirficing everything to try to do some good. I am sure before there deaths they had done many great things. I hope there is a god to take them in.
To my team leader SSGT Sabasteansky and the rest of my brothers that went before me, save a seat for me at the bar, for I will join you soon. Semper Fi Devil Dog.
wow i didn't know that a person could sink so low. many people died that day and you have the down right disrespect to mock the pilot!?! i hope that you were not raised by humans because if so, they did a piss poor job of teaching you respect. i hope that one day you truly see the audacity of the words you wrote.
People just don't know what we do every day to protect their freedom. Once A Marine, Always A Marine, You will never be forgoten, Semper FI my brothers!!!!!!
Rest In Peace Marines. May you guard the the streets of heaven.
"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag." Father Denis Edward O'Brien/USMC
sorry-just saw the date. my d.i (force recon) burned our bodies that, day in boot. he was pissed off- he served in the gulf war with some of those marines.
I was there that day on helo 3. One of the Dragons/trailer. It definately was a shitty day. I think about this all the time. The shitty part was the new idea that someone came up with of not putting our gear on until we reached a safe hover. I almost dropped my m-203 out of the hell hole the second time thru the repeat SOC quals. If the hm-166 would utilize a few more feet of a 60 ft fast rope. I recall a time on a goplat not even using the rope because they were too low.
damn it.. That's just a shame. I bet that pilot is a fucking drunk zombie by now, unless he's somewhere at psychiatric clinic.. What a shame and huge loss... My very deepest sympathy.
Way back in the very late 80s when 1st got the green light for GOPLAT and MIO which all fell under the heading MSPF it was a real hard learning curve. Because back at that time, the individuals who were liaison were not the most forthcoming with a wealth of knowledge. For all involved in present-day OPS. It is not a factor, and I hope this is truly a rare occurrence. Their families have my deepest sympathy. Even this far down the road Semper Fi for ever
Shit thats horrible to watch, watching that Crew Chief (I think thats the correct title?) trying to climb out of the side door as the bird started to flip was horrible. It was not long after this that they started to introduce releaseable armour systems, because a lot of FR Marines died due to being dragged under by their armour. Terrible tradgedy.
Dang that sucks! Being former marine myself I can relate to how easy it is to forget how strong these machines are. We are around them so much that we forget about the "safety" Factor.
Because the pilot came in way to fast and steep. It was suppose to be a fast rope insertion, you can even see some ones legs comming out of the hell hole in the middle of the helicopters floor as it rolls into the ocean.
Thanks Sweede for posting the facts relating to this terible crash. For those who may be interested there is a series of three vidieos posted by ei2232 with more fact from one of the surivors.I served in CH-46 squadrons during my eight years in the Corps.
total Pilot error and the Crew chief wasnt doing his damn job either.
Im glad that more were not lost
the Gysgt that was killed was aircrew the word we got was he tried to help out as many as he could from the plane
No helo dunker will prepare you for that crash. To fast to low and then when the idiot at the controls felt he hit something he pulled power he should have just crashed it to the deck would have saved lives
It wasnt a chinook it was a CH-46 and they were getting ready to fast rope onto the flight deck, the pilot came in to low to hot and got caught, I hated him for a while for it but he survived and I can only imagine what he has to live with. It was a bad day for all of us, everyone is missed.
i too am an ex-jarhead, and i have to say that if they were fixing to to do a fastrope expiditiously out of the bird then either the fuckin pilot was an idiot or they had troubles. i have never seen a fastrope at ground zero!!
"God will be with you." So where was God when this happened? If it seems insensitive to ask that, it should seem even more insensitive for a loving god to allow that to happen. I certainly wouldn't have, and I'm just a human.
wtf. you can see that the pilot tryes to get out of the helicopter because you can see his hands. i think the pilot has survievd becaus he had a big window and they have got divers with protectingclothes against the cold water
Isn't there a survivor who was or is doing Ironman triathlons to raise money for the families of the fallen here? Come to think of it, is that person you Swede?
His name is Butler, he used to be my plt commander, i was there this day, Baca was a good friend of mine and had just had a baby, this video still turns my stomach.

1992 22 MEU (I think it was), we lost a helo and crew, I believe in the Adriatic Sea due to heavy.
I think it was 1993 (24 MEU?) we lost another helo and crew due to mechanical failure.
These accidents aren't that rare. I remember hearing that every deployment lost a helo - it was expected.
And this was in peace time.
