there are 2 likely reasons:

1) roman has been desperately trying to get rid of mourinho & waiting for the right moment to hit him n that moment came when chelsea obtained only 2 draws out of 3 games. he's even brought in avram grant since july & this shows that roman might be planning for something

2) roman was just lashing out at mourinho & out of desperation jose just blatantly decided to resign but actually he didnt. it might just be a tactic of the portuguese to 'terrify' roman. he knew he was the special one n irreplacable & that chelsea players might not want to accept the sudden departure. in the end roman will be forced to install jose back & he will never dare to 'disturb' mourinho anymore
