Good thing he didn't trip over the chair at 0:41. Amazing rendition. To me his voice sounds pretty sizable, yet with impressive lightness and grace, and a clear-cutting ring.
I have a strange feeling. On 1996 I was so young so I couldn't appreciate that music as much as I could. Now, being able to visit Opera Hauses... Rainer does not sing that anymore! :(
He tires here due the throat rising. The throat must be relaxed/at rest for anyone to sing such an aria, especially a tenor. The upper throat is closed here which accounts for the sound at the top. There is potential here though. Good luck to him.
It is not possible to sing at an international level with a closed throat. The sound is a bit throaty, but then, you can find that with Kaufmann or Wunderlich as well.
@Pollione88 Incorrect. Check out "The Audition." They pointed out the guy from Jersey as having amazing talent but issues with tension in his upper register. Those problems aren't fixed as of right now, but if I recall correctly, there was something about him and La Scala . . . even international-level singers have technique issues. Some more than others, but no one has none.
This might be one of the most beautiful aria's Mozart ever written... and this interpretation it's fantastic - the best i've ever heard. I think this is the kind of voice Mozart would want to sing this beautiful aria.
In my view the best performance of Cosi ever. Your channel is by the way a treasure of my favorite music.
I actually don't care for his singing here -- his tone is pretty but sounds very forced. I think if he freed up the breath, this would flow much more nicely.
The version of his singing this at Covent Garden is better in my opinion. It's funny what a year can do to a voice. In the other performance he just has more overall control... and ironically enough, he has more control lying down? Funny if you think about it. Regardless, such a pleasant voice to listen to. Bravo.
Topi Lehtipuu, a young Finnish tenor, sings this aria exquisitely. Trost does not measure up. Check out Lehtipuu's video of UN'AURA AMOROSA and hear/see for yourself.
Lehtipuu sings the aria exquistely...agreed..I personally love Lehtipuu's Ferrando..but don't think we will ever be able to say that Trost doesn;t measure up...one of the ,or perhaps THE definitive Ferrando of our generation..
This performance, agreed isn't the finest you can come across of Rainer but check out his rendition on Gardiner DVD..astounding.
This is surprisingly good.. people that handsome shouldn't be able to sing this well, it's not very fair. What ever happened to balance. He's probably a crack-fiend...hopefully something worst.
The way he throws away the "da (speme)", the g sharp, is not nice. "Unnnnn dolce (ristoro)" and the Glottis is typical German. It makes me angry, if a singer cannot study this. It's not so difficult, or?
Listen to Alfredo Kraus, then you know the perfect singer for that! (Recording conducted by Karl Böhm)
capomastrodicanto, you are a bit too harsh, and a bit too ignorant as well. True, though, that the way he sings 'da' (G sharp) is not perfect on this particular occasion (he did sing it well in other performances) "If a singer cannot study this": we hates him, don't we precious?
Kraus BTW sings this a bit too nasal, but he ain't bad either, both very good singers singing excruciatingly difficult music.
You have got to believe that Rainer Trost was born to sing Ferrando...I've heard quite a number of them..but god alone knows how,his is uniquely supreme...Just sublime..Bravo
Opera does inspires me in my quality of life as a person that enjoys life and in my work, when I paint and do printmaking! Thank you so much for showing us this video! It did amazed me! Such a fantastic Mozart's Interpretation by Rainer Trost! Once again thank you!! :)
God, I love it. I can't decide if I like him or Kaufmann better on this aria, but in any case Trost has an amazingly beautiful voice. Even my dad, who knows very little about opera, happened to hear me playing this video and said "wow, that guy is GOOD." :-P
Yeah, I think I actually agree with you. Kaufmann has since moved on to roles more suited to his larger voice. Trost has such a sweet, pure tone that is perfect for this role.
This is one of the loveliest performances of this aria that I've ever heard. Cosi is one of my all time favorites, along with Figaro, and Un aura amorosa, ranks up in my top five Mozart arias.
Now he is just too fabulous, both in vocal technique and appearance. I cant hear enough of this rendition; wonderful dyanmics and interpretation. A choice piece, indeed
Great performance of an apparently non complicated aria. In its simplicity is precisely its main complication. Quite difficult to sing it in a so elegant way, avobe all for such a young tenor. Congratulations.
Decent interpretation. Young voice still. I am not wholly convinced by this recording. Would love to hear him now... someone feel free to send a link.
Love him! Thank you. He doesn't do a whole lot of stuff anymore, but he burst onto the european scene in the early 90s and everyone expected him to be around a long time.
He doesn't? He sang Flamand in Strauss' Capriccio at the Amsterdam Muziektheater last September, and rather adorably at that. I could finally see where the Countess is coming from - though I'd still have gone for Dietrich Henschel's Olivier myself...
This is a splendid voice, maybe to heavy for the aria (like Alagna) but what a personality

Pessima esecuzione.
