Let me break it down to you real simply, Critical Mass - you're not making any important statement, nor standing up for anything that matters, by riding bicycles in a group and blocking traffic. i have not owned a car in quite some time, i have been bike only for awhile (when most of these boutique bikers were still driving their parent's jeep grand cherokee to concerts). That said the Critical Mass is worse for serious cyclists than anything else i can think of. I will routinely go out of my way to stop CM in my own town at red lights--with my bike.

I'm in there somewhere, right near the center of the intersection. The cops blocked off the road so we couldn't turn east toward the lake and people got pissed off because there is no reason why a cop should be able to tell someone they can't use a road in these circumstances. So instead of following the route the cops wanted everyone to follow, people just stopped and thousands of cyclists really fucked up traffic for a while.
