@chrisstevensjunior i think that i would have to be careful with it otherwise i could get radiation poisoning, but i dont know much about nuclear energy. it depends on the level of nuclear energy you are exposed to. for example, bananas are radioactive, but i think you would have to eat millions to get poisoned
@BeakyRed this type of reactor is based around thorium, thorium only gives off alpha wave particles, these cannot penetrate your skin and will only have the ability to harm you if ingested
and this wont produce plutonium.this will produce uranium 233.because a neutron coming from the core will react with the thorium 232 and turn into thorium 233 and that decays by a beta particule to uranium 233
oh please, Plutonium-234 is much easier to obtain from ur local black market dealer,,,i know some one named Achmed Bad'aafdi in Iraq who gets Plutonium, Uranium, Californium, Iridium and other isotopes, WHOLESALE! :D
You can also simply go to Siberia and pick up tons of discarded German and French nuclear waste (possibly including uranium and plutonium) randomly throughout the countryside...
@zeekertron Someone in the States once tried to built his own reactor. He got injured through the exposure to radiation, but survived as far as i know. Look up David Hahn on wikipedia...
While this is based on real science, ie all those materials are in the places they said they were, and they can 'theoretically' be used in a nuclear reactor, the amounts are Waaaay off. You would need several tons of thorium to achive critical mass and they vastly exadurated the amount of material you could get from those sources.
They use Uranium/plutonium for a reason. Low critical mass. To build a reactor that size you would need highly refined plutonium and neutron reflectors
You could, if you had a powerful enough source of alpha particles - but it would need to be a rediculously large amount if you wanted to sustain a sub-critical fission chain reaction.
To put this to an analogy, it's like your trying to light a candle, but instead of wax you have uranium and instead of a lighter you have an alpha source. If you don't have enough wax for the candle to sustain a flame, you 'could' just leave the ligher burning, but it would kind of be missing the point.
I actually got a bunch of fire detectors from hardware company went out of business couple years ago, I got 2 cases of them. Always wanted to try and make a neutron gun with them, they've been sitting in the garage for about 3 years now. Whenever I'm stop being lazy I definitely will be trying it.
Any attempts to collect and concentrate radioactive elements from home appliances could actually work. But then it would be dangerous, and probably illegal (depends on where you live). Some Thorium mantles are dangerously hot as they are, no need to collect more of then and extract the thoriums.
Seem like I can't leave my house without Geiger after this. Good thing at least radium watches are pretty hard to get these days .. there is a reason why they stopped making them.
Is there a 'stupid' category? This is supposed to be funny, I guess, but it's just straight-faced enough that some folks might try it. That thorium procedure will fill your lungs with alpha emitter and a possible case of lung cancer down the line. BTW, you can't make plutonium this way. The video is irresponsible crap.
@JohnXT7 What part of "a reactor is not a bomb" are you still not getting? A nuclear reactor and and atomic bomb are entirely different both mechanically and in what chemicals they use.
Excellent video, my good sir. You also appear to have summed up everything of radioactive importance to be learned from "The radioactive boy scout" in a single 2:38 video.
@MaaveMaave atomic bombs are nuclear reactors, too (without producing electricity)
only thing they do is unleaching energy in form of (termal)radiation, which then can be used to wipe out cities or heat up water (like in steam engines) which then brings turbines to produce energy by circulating...
this reactor is indeed to weak to do any of the above, but should you succede in creating pure plutonium (about 99% of Plutonium-239) and about enough to achive the critical mass (min 4.49 kg)....
@slitor Nice nuclear powered model trains! Me and a buddy were joking about making a tiny simpsons style nuclear powerplant, and putting a teapot on top of it.
It's the best cup of tea that ever gave you cancer!
@raykiller545 Simply evaporate the liquid. Remaining powder will have enough amount of radium. Just don't overheat it because active boiling will produce the aerosol that will carry part of the radium away.
@Francio210 the lead block is basically a neutron gun, the lead reflects the alpha particles to the only opening (the barrel of the gun) where they react with the aluminum atoms and let off neutrons that turns the thorium into uranium. the aluminum is the neutron source, the alpha and beta particles are reacting with the aluminum to produce neutrons. but i dont see how this would actually work, it seems like it would just be a pile, not a fully functional reactor.
oh my god, this is the most amazing thing ive ever seen in my life! i couldnt tell if it was serious or not then i looked at the comments.... then i shat bricks...

lsteer100 9 months ago

luigi14444 7 months ago
@luigi14444 that maybe, but it is still dangerous.
depending on what you're using for fuel, the amount of radiation given off would be damaging.
if left untreated, you could cause a nuclear explosion (fusion or fission).
