  • with a can of beans ..black eyed peas nes cafe with ice and a candy bar ..it will be the sidewinder shits tonight ..

  • that the great great song the legendary song ever

  • This was my favourite song when i was 5 or 6 years old

  • Fairly certain it's Call me when you try to wake her up. Fits in fine.

  • as long as I wake her up

  • At 2.33, Stipe laughs

I heard a rumour it was left in after his mate Kurt Cobain surprised him during recording, by jumping out from behind an amp stack

It seems Michael returned the favour, if you listen to Milk It by Nirvana, Cobain chuckles before a big scream bit at the end.

    Anyone back me up?

  • RUMOURS!ITSYESME Has cleared it up!!

  • I've heard somewhere that it's a joke of their's that the line "reading of Dr. Seuss" sounds like "reading of Dr. Zeus" when he sings it. Of course, before I looked it up now I thought it was "peanut butter Dr. Seuss"

  • @enntey: that laughing doesn't have anything to do with cobain. it had something to do with the spelling of dr. seuss (you can read that in "r.e.m. - inside out.")

  • I think that R.E.M. have been having a joke with people all these years about the lyric- at best he fits in 'Calling to wake her up'- he certainly doesn't seem to fit in 'Call me when you try to wake her up' (despite what R.E.M. say) unless they compressed the sound.

  • HI! Friends I just wish to clear up a bit of a

gliche here- what im singing is"I`M COMING IN TO WAKE HER UP"!She was really pissed & fell asleep on her side & was shaking like a snake

-hence "sidewinder"We got a bit concerned that she may do a "JOHN BONHAM"& drown in her

own spew so we had to wake her up????? REGARDS,Micheal & Peter.

  • That's plausible, but if I listen carefully, I can hear the words "Call me when you try to wake her up". "Call me when you try" is sung really quickly.

  • lol i love listening to other peoples interpretations of this song..me.. i was a "calling jamaica" gal too..LOL

  • For a long time, I thought he was saying... "Calling Jamaica, calling Jamaica..." I got over it.......

  • The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite is arguably my favourite song from Automatic for the people. I like its celebratory feel, for the same reason that I like Shiny Happy People and Me in Honey from Out of Time. The great Man on the moon is arguably 'Sidewinder's' equivalent on the second half of the album. Drive and Try not to breathe were great opening songs too.

  • Peter Buck hates it. What a grouch.

  • It was a great album, I also remember when I brought it on cassette from a shop that is sadly no longer with us, Woolworths

  • Call me when you try to wake her (up).

  • AWESOME SONG AWESOME BAND

  • I thought this song was banded from air or CD after the main bloke walked in to play naked?

  • for some reason they have never done this song live. Mebbe that explains it, but I never heard that one. I would PAY big to see this song live.

  • 43 is the highest number

  • always when i hear it my mind get back a few years ago, it was a cold sunny morning i was on my way back home from my girlfriend - i feel like a was 2 feet above the ground.. :) and i heard this song for the first time.. so now when i hear it again that feeling hit me again - so thanks for make me smile - and for posting this one

    Cheers :)

  • It's "call me to wake her up", not calling Tom Baker.

  • it's call me when you try to wake her.. call me when you try to wake her up...

  • Oh dear! Poor Cheryl....as Nick Drake wrote so profoundly: Fame is but a fruit tree So very unsound. It can never flourish Till its stock is in the ground. So (wo)men of fame Can never find a way Till time has flown Far from their dying day. Forgotten while you're here Remembered for a while A much updated ruin From a much outdated style. Cheryl Baker R.I.P. :-(
  • To put the record straight once and for all the lyrics are 'CALLING CHERYL BAKER'

She's a well known British former singer with circa 1980 Eurovison Song Contest winners 'Buck's Fizz', now occasional TV personality and recently seen playing semi-pro Poker on TV. Clearly REM could not possibly be referring to anyone else. It would be absurd.

  • what the hell are you on about rofl.. i looked up the official lyrics = 'call me when you try to wake her up.'

  • Calling Tom Baker,Calling Tom Baker,Calling Tom Baker,Calling Tom Baker,Calling Tom Baker,Calling Tom Baker, ohhhhh!

  • Calling Tom Baker!

  • The Sidewinder was developed by the U.S. Navy, and was used as extra engine boost for the man who first broke Mach 1 on land.

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • Man who cares what it´s about - in so many R.E.M. lyrics one doesn´t have a clue what it´s about. Still they are one of the best bands and the lyrics are really brilliant and always fit the atmosphere of the songs. Don´t loog for logic - enjoy!

  • One of REM's best no doubt

  • they need to do it live at least once! that shit pisses me off...

  • Jejeje not, which happens is that in Spanish it seems that he says " he eats many clam "

  • tried to find this for ages

  • nice song :)

  • maybe i'm retarted but what is this damn song about. he's homeless, living next to a pay phone, eating shitty food, referencing doctor suess , and who is he trying to wake

  • ya know what? i've heard this song a millon times in my life and i have no idea who he is trying wake up. what a good question.

  • "come mucha almeja" jajaja

  • are you trying to find out what he says in the chorus? It's "Call me when your going to try and wake hur up" just in case.

  • okay I just did some research. From what I've seen, some people think it's about Stipes drug addiction, but he did not write the song. IT was by some dude named jones. From what it looks like, this is just one of those songs us song writers just get an idea from a random phrase. Thats probaly what it is.

  • umm this song was written by REM. they got the idea from the lion sleeps tonight.

  • en español parece que dijera en el estribillo "come mucha arveja" jajaja

  • Quality, was looking everywhere for this song :)

  • Instant soup =D

  • awesome!!!!!!!!

  • Tommy Towaka! Tommy Towaka! =D

  • "call me and try to wake her" this line drove me mad years ago I thought it was call me in chadabaker! misheard lyrics!

  • Hell, I thought it said, 'Don't even try to wake her up'.

  • I thought it was "coneychawakehaha".

  • lol , i thought it was 'comin in jamaca'

  • It's "call me when you try to wake her up". Thats a total fact. Straight from the horses mouth, so stop debating it.

  • U aint wrong there mate . Bloody good song though

  • Call me when you try to wake her up.

  • Baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me

Today I need something more sub-sub-sub-substantial

A can of beans or blackeyed peas, some Nescafe and ice,

A candy bar, a falling star, or a reading from Doctor Seuss

  • BEST SONG EVER. Period. Need more quality and LIVE

  • call me and try to wake her up

  • "Baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me, today I need something more sub-sub-sub-sub substantial"

  • Call me when you try to wake her up ofc..

  • call me when you wake her up....i just checked, still doesn't sound right though, drive me mental for years

  • go in n try to wake her up

  • I know it's not, but it does sound like coming to jamaica

  • LOL I thought it was calling Jamaica until I looked it up. He says it so fast

  • to me it sound like either "going to wak her up" or "calling to wake her up"

  • tonite

  • how about "cummin'in carrol baker"?

  • You're all wrong - It's - Calling To Wake Her.

  • No it's not, TheLyn1 is correct - It's in the piano book of 'The very Best of REM'.

  • It's call me when you try to wake her up! But you don't need to start internet fighting over it just enjoy the music.

  • You are sooo right!! Hey stop arguing about the lyrics and feel the song!!

  • Coming to Jamaika. lol i always sang that so.

Im German so its ok, i think.

cmon yeah lets come to Jamaika)))

  • it says: Call me when you try to wake her up!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it says: Call me when you try to wake her up!

  • what the fuck !!!!!! coming to jamaica ?? whats that

  • lol it sounds nothing like coming to jamaica!

  • "call me and try to wake her up", you ****!

  • This is my favourite song by REM, thanks for uploading it

  • i love this song, haven't heard it in ages, but it is legendary!!!!!

  • love this song

  • I have been hearing this on the radio at work every day, and I've been searching for days to find just what the f*** song it was. I'm happy to finally find it.

Now to find the lyrics... and even with the words in front of me, the song makes even LESS sense...

  • chorus - Call me when you try to wake her up

if anyones wondering Hard to make out

  • i just got up from sleep cause it was on my head then looked it up on youtube. i guess i'm not the only one here.

  • i really want to know what this song is about? because its always in my head

  • 2:33 ..is it a chuckle?

  • that's what I thought LOL!

  • Yes, 'cause they had a time getting the pronouciation of "Dr. Seuss" right.:-)

  • i think hes laughin about the dr seuss line lol

  • I think so. :D

  • that's probably my favorite part of the song

  • what is it about?

  • My favourite lines: "baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me, today I need something more sub-sub-sub-substantial..." OR: "But this machine can only swallow money, you can't lay a patch by computer design, it's just a lot of stupid, stupid signs." Because at this moment I'm hating my laptop!!!!

  • This album equals my childhood.

  • Today I finally got round to seeing what the lyrcis of the chorus were. I used to think it was "only in America" or something

  • Yeah I used to have a weird feeing that it was something like "Calling Jamaica" and looked like a plank singing it like that... haha

  • Haha!!! I love the lyrics to this song! Why are they crammed into such a short time! Ive always sang "Born in Jamaica"!!! If someone heard me singing Call me when u try to wake her up, they'd look at me gone out.

  • This song is an essential eighties song to know. I love the strings arrangement; they play such an important role; they give it that taste of classical.

  • I'd hate to burst your bubble, but that song is 90's; 1991 to be more specific. Even though REM came to be in '88 they were more of a thing of the early 90's

  • oops. u're right. Thks.

  • Oh yeah- and when I was 5 I always thought the words were "Going to Wickenham" which was a town just down the road from where I lived... so yeah haha

  • I love the little chuckle after "a reading from Dr. Seuss"

I loved Dr. Seuss as a little kid- Dad could never say the words without a lysp- and this was childhood song of mine- so yeah- only the best song ever!

  • it sounds like tonys a baker

  • i cant get this song out of my head not that im complaning or anything

  • REM are coming to the Baltics next week... for the first time ever... strange feelings...

  • ..non ho mai capito se quella al 2:34 mituti è una specie di risatina by Michael Stipe..che atroce enigma..:-D

    Comunque sia la canzone è bellissima..ti prende..é simpatica!..come sempre Great R.e.M.!!!!!!

  • call me when you try and wake her

  • I love this song, but what is it about? Can't figure out the lyrics.

  • it's about his pregnant wife. She's the sidewinder.

  • i thought it was homeage shall awaken 'em

    great song!

  • best rem album...ever

  • i love that chuckle after " areading from dr. seuss

  • It was best song for me if i had fiftheen. I loved Michael very much. REM are the best. Michael is the best and their cocert in Prague was awesome!

  • Actual Lyrics: "Call me when you try to wake her up"

Misheard as: "Coming to Jamaica ha"

Anyone else been on msn homepage recently?

  • lol me! That's why I'm watching this. I remember this song from when I was little and I never knew what that bit said until today! I always used to call it 'The Jamaica Song' lol.

  • I read that he did laugh when doing the song, because he kept on doing the line about Dr.Seuss wrong and laughed when he did it right.

  • oh man i've just today found out he doesn't sing "calling Jamaica" changed the song for me completely lol.

  • this song is soo fun! love it... :D

  • Is it just me, or does he sing with a strange accent during the chorus?

  • i swear to god at 2:32 - 2:35 he laughs

  • chawlichawickerher...

  • when i was young my mother play this song so mutch now it is just my favorite song:D

  • R.E.M ROCKS!!! Why this fucking great video have only 190.199 views? It's difficult to understand for me...

  • the tee hee hee sounds like "in the jungle" :P

  • i think that was on purpose...

"the lion sleeps tonight", "the sidewinder sleeps tonight"

maybe its just a big coincidence.

  • yeh i think so, its just funny :P

  • It isn't a coincidence. They based the name, and the opening riff on The lion sleeps tonite. The lion sleeps tonite was the b-side on the single too.

  • i've always wondered why they haven't ever played this one live. maybe they will one day, they only started performing 'ignoreland' this year.

  • Best song ever. Thats a fact...

  • ITS GREAT SONG FOR TRAVEL

  • oh, I love this song! I love the cd that this song's on "automatic for the people"!! :D:D

  • one of my favourite REM songs!
