Actually, according the the Geneva Conventions, it is illegal for a mine to be triggered by anything other than the person who set it there. The idea is that a soldier wont blow a civilian away, whereas a tripwire (or motion sensor) will do that to anyone.

There is tripwire and remote. Laser tripwire was an experiment. It wouldn't be that good because if you planted one then retreated you could detonate yourself. With a remote one you could run past it with any doubts so you could lead the enemy into it.

I'm not 100% positive, seeing as i don't own one, but i've heard it's something around 30-40 ft. most people just end up using a trip line.
