  • in the image of shadow galery , it sounds like poison of alice cooper

  • hey just post this comment to the ones who never listened to Pyramaze... check out you´l love them.... by the way symphony x ROCKS

  • For those who say that DT doesn't have emotion in their songs: just listen to A Change Of Seasons and Learing To Live. I'm sure you haven't heard them. If you did, then I'm sure that your eyes after that were pouring tears out of emotion.

  • Images & Words was their most emotive album though.

  • There is technically nothing wrong with Dream Theater. Sadly, their musical perfection does not automatically give their music a "feel". There is no emotion in their music and performance, no passion comes across to the audience, in my opinion. Been to a few concerts, heard all the albums. They impress the s**t out of me on a techical level, but disappoint me by conveying hardly any emotions at all.

  • @applesmurfen How do people always say they have no emotion. I really don't understand it. There is emotion throughout the whole spectrum of their career. Another Day, Forsaken, Space Dye-Vest, Innocence Faded, These Walls. EVERY SOLO. Erotomania, Misunderstood, In The Name of God. If you're looking for Barry White style emotion than you're in the wrong genre of music, this is metal.

  • :)

Creating a touchy feely song is not difficult. Being able to perform it in a believable way IS. That is why I think its a shame that every time I`ve heard DT live they`ve sounded as well rehearsed as a military regiment and as believable as George W. Bush :( There are other bands in the same genre that is more believable than DT even if they are not as technically accomplished. Somehow the two characteristics seems to often exclude each other... Sorry I can`t explain this better.

  • The whole "No Emotion" argument is complete and utter bullshit in my opinion. The reason I dislike DT personally, is because they're horrendously overrated, and their vocalist kinda pisses me off. They're not nearly as much worth listening to as so many other bands are. Same thing is the case for Tool with me, but I can actually listen to/take Tool seriously.

  • I think just because according to you a band is "overrated" doesnt mean the band isn't good. You basically said the reason you don't like them is because their vocalist annoys you and they're overrated. I think Nirvana is overrated but that doesn't mean I can't like em.

  • ...Um, when did I ever say they weren't good? They're good, sure, but that Doesn't change the fact that they're horrendously overrated.

I think Tool is also incredibly overrated, but I own three of their albums, simply because I LIKE their music, despite how heavily worshiped they are by their moronic braindead fanboys.

  • what makes dream theater or tool overrated? You can say that probably about any band that someone other than you consider their favorite band, if you don't yourself. But really, how are they overrated?

  • Basically, everyone gives them credit for shit they didn't even do. Like innovate the genre.

Or otherwise, they just aren't that good considering what everyone says about them. Pretty simple actually.

  • Dt is not only a prog metal band, IS A FUCKING GREAT BAND

  • Dream Theater aren't overrated as a band... maybe as a PROG metal band...

    But they are awesome.

Shadow Gallery is a band I recently got into - they have AWESOME piano segments!

  • I agree. I also don't quite understand why people say DT is main stream. As far as Prog goes, they are mainstream. But as a metal band....not so much

  • wtf listen to train of tought fucking kik ass progressive metal !

  • Too bad Mike Baker died last year. I don't know if the band will continue on. Enjoy their five albums though, you'll love 'em.

  • ehhhhh What? They just released a new album with a new vocalist dude.

  • Oh, that's good to hear. I thought that was it.

  • Thanks for making a "mix tape". Most prog metal is cheesy, so it is good to have a nice sampler in hopes of finding a new prog metal band that I may have been unaware of. Even if I only were to find 1 new band I like out of the many you listed, it was worth it. So thanks.

and I am also a DT fan (it's in my top 5 fav), but even I acknowledge they are overrated. and the "if it wasn't for DT none of this shitty bands would exist" stupid comment is living proof of it. So suck it.

What else... yeah, queensryche and FW may have been the first "prog bands", although that doesn't change the fact they're boring as shit.

  • Amazing, this video series has some of the best prog stuff available, and as much as I love dream theater, there is so much more out there :D

  • how do u have a prog metal vid wit out dream theater?

  • queensreich is mainstream metal/rock not prog at all

  • the description angers me. XD yes of course there are other Prog Bands besides DT...but not alot of them can compare to DT nothing can...so when i think of prog i think of DT, cause they're the best, in my opion, Queensryche is also very good

  • Opinions are like assholes..... everyone has a different one.

  • yeah and usually they stink

  • Sure they can, dude...guess what? Some guys like me turned their back on DT after they became a bunch of super skilled but saying nothing musicians. LaBrie is 3rd league singer. Outside DT, the members always thrive but together they suck anymore. So, stay angry or get a life. People just don't fall in line and don't go Uh and Ahh just because someone can play thousand notes a second. Music is about diversity, more than anything else. Try Planet X - that's DTx10

  • I would also recommend Dominici. His last year album totally kicks the shit out of both octavarium and systematic chaos. And he was the former DT vocalist, how ironic is that?

  • I still got their first cd with him...I will definitively check his stuff;I didn't hear anything from him but now that you mentioned it, I vaguely remember someone already told me that he supposedly recorded some really good stuff. Thanks. Did you try Seventh Wonder? Pretty good Scandianvian outfit, beside others who are more recognized...

  • DT is much more than skilled musicians playing complicated music. Look at a lot of their albums before JP and MP started producing- Songs like Learning to Live, Metropolis (parts one and two), Scarred, A Change of Seasons, A Mind Beside Itself- you'll find much emotion and incredible songwriting.

  • Look, I heard them all, I used to be a fan before most people knew about them. But after Kevin Moore left, and after they got rid off Derek, it all went to overproduced stuff trying to mask the fact they steal many ideas from other bands. Uncredible songwriting? Give me a break, dude...it's all shallow stuff, with cheesy lyrics. I've got everything they ever produced and as a band they suck anymore. Individually, I like them a lot more. There they show some spirit. Planet X rules, man.

  • Well it's not like DT doesn't deserve any of the credit their given. I agree that the Rudess years are a step down from the previous keyboardists, but if you've heard Octavarium then you'd know what I mean with the songwriting. The way the song's movements build up to the climax- it's just what prog is, it's a story. I'll be sure to check out Planet X, that is Derek's band, correct? Or am I thinking of Fate's Warning?

  • Yes, there are moments where I always think "Yeah, man! Why don't you (DT) write like that the entire album and not just piece of it". There are these moments on any of their albums. But because I love to listen to cd's in their entirety, it must capture me from beginning to the end. DT did that only with IAW. Octavarium is OK, but I absolutely can't stand LaBrie anymore, so for me it's thumbs down. Saw them live in San Diego, and they played bad. Planet X is Derek's band. TOTAL MUSIC, man.

  • Whats with all the hatin'... honestly... Fighting over the music you love... -Shakes head-

  • I didnt say prog in general i said prog METAL! Prog Metal was born after DT pratically invented it! ALl prog metal bands today all have been greatly influenced by DT

  • check when Sieges Even released their first Demo and then tell me how it is possible for them to publish an album before their "fathers"

  • they do have some prog elements but DT is the band that defined Prog metal! Today they are called prog just like queensryche, but their prog elements is closer to prog rock. Go read the deff of prog metal and you will see! wikipedia!

  • Lol... "Some prog elements" ? My friend, reading You saying that tells me theres no point in arguing with You. You have no clue about what you are talking about. "Closer to prog rock" ? Jesus !

  • I have no clue? Ok man some people just love to hate and there is not another way to them! By the way i love sieges, But their first stuff is not even compared to prog metal and more to prog rock, they even said themselves! Get ur facts straight before you start an argument lol

Gracias!

  • hasnt anybody heard of burst

  • I wish the majority of prog metal bands wouldn't be so borderline power metal. We need more prog metal bands like Cynic, and more bands that have the jazzy ELP-like aspect that Dream Theater has, but don't sound so much like DT.

  • thats your opinion.. nothing more

  • Oh, but it is fact. The proof is in the music: all these guys blow Ronnie James Dio hardcore! You stupid fuck.

  • Actually, you are an elitist douchebag.

Enjoy your highly inferior metal bands. Lol, Mastodon. Ok.

  • ...

  • "A proof that there's a whole lot more in prog metal than Dream Theater".... still you could put some theater to this video .dream theater and opeth owns all these masterpieces

  • If I do that....I would be lying. Because I clearly stated that this is a compilation of MY FAVORITE, prog metal bands......and DT isnt one of them. Regarding Opeth, I have 10 more videos in this series... check my channel...there are a whole lot more bands.

  • i will..... btw have you heard progressive trance?.....ugh its just that i cant hear eny progression between that and beating some jungle drums at year 2

  • At last someone who finally calls Opeth progressive metal! THANK YOU! (I really heard many people saying that they are black metal...)

  • They were always prog man! Its people who don't know the right " labels" these days! Had this girl once saying that btbam was a rock/metal band. I was like whaaaaaat! Be specific they are not only that!

  • dude are u serious?!

where the hell is Fuseboxx. they're like one of the greatests man and there not on ur list?

  • This music is pretty good, but my style goes more with bands like pain of salvation :) Sounds more melodic to me.

  • ZERO HOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and I forgot, Lemur Voice > all those bands ;)

  • In my opinion, Lemur Voice is the best band in the history of prog metal.

  • I hate people saying ''english please'', why can't you speak 2 languages like me? Ignorant

  • English please.

  • I Uploaded this video. I can speak any language I want to.

  • Good selection but where's dream theater opeth and queensryche?

  • which of these bands have songs like:

    1-A change of seasons

    2-Six degrees of inner turbulence

    3-Octavarium

    4-Metropolis 1

    5-Scenes from a memory(Metropolis2)

Come on Dream Thetaer its not an overrated band, this song are now clasics in Progresive metal, Dream Theater it one of the first bands in Progresive Metal, they are a pioners, this bans that you put here are only copies

  • heheheh FANBOY

  • rixxxer is right though dream theater is the father of prog metal i really don't understand how you can't like them, but ok taste is taste. But please do not say that they are overrated! They are the best musicians in their genre! While most prog bands keep repeating patters in their music deam is versatile, that you gotta admit!

  • Fathers of prog metal? It seem you have no idea of prog's history my friend.

  • ok then buddy! Go ahead enlighten me! Before dream theater there was only prog rock not metal! People like to mention queensryche and fates warning but they only took a progressive approach after the 80's they were considered powermetal and dream theater were the ones to fuse the jazz/fusion elements with the prog rock elements, and created a heavier sound with the metal elements, thus prog metal was born! I'm a musician man, for some time now and u just dont like them so u dont want to recogniz

  • er, sorry - for some reason on my comp youtube comments are all out of order so i don't see your responses until i scroll way down.

still, FW is def. prog metal.

  • my bad fates warning was considered more like thrash metal instead of power

  • I wouldn't say fathers of prog metal. But any prog metal fan should agree that they are an important chapter of the genre's history for sure.

  • well man if u check the history of prog metal anyone will basically tell you that. Prog rock ws born in the late 60's and early 70's with bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson. But Prog metal was really born with DT man, people just mention Queensryche out of respect, but they were a lot like maiden, more of a melodic/power metal instead of prog

  • uh. Fates Warning started prog metal.. or at least they were playing it far before DT was. Mike Portnoy said so himself.

That said, DT is great, but there are a several bands out there that are equally as good. Between the Buried and Me, for example.. although they're actually better from a technical and compositional standpoint, provided you can stand the harsh vocals.

  • The guitarist for the third band lifted his sweep lick straight off Buckethead's Androids of Notre Dame. He's obviously capable,at least tweak it a bit.

  • Opeth, Tool, BTBAM, Seventh Wonder, Psyopis, Circus Maximus... Those are progmetalhead bands.

  • Prog doesn't work like the rest of the music world. People don't play in prog bands to get famous or rich, they do it because of the music. The same sort of thing goes for prog listeners too. They dont listen to it to be cool, or trendy, they listen to it because its fucking good music. That is why Dream Theater is popular: because their music is fucking amazing = not overrated at all.

DT are big because they have their own, unique sound. Most of these bands are decent, but lack uniqueness

  • where the hell is TOOL? oO

  • born of osiris?

    between the buried and me?

    opeth?

  • and where is Cynic?? hahaha all this bands sucks, Cynic rules, Dream Theater rules, Liquid Tension its the masterpiece of prog metal, wtf with this gay bands???

  • Cynic's in another of this guy's videos, if you looked ;)

  • yes now i know, but im think that Dream Theater isnt an over rated band, they are awesome.

  • Agreed! Though I´m more knowledgeable in Prg Rock than Prog metal, even I can pull of my sleeve groups much better than these

  • Cool, where is your compilation?

  • I think that the problem with DT, or the reason many 'real' prog fans like here dislike them is that many fans of DT (especially younger ages) like them for the wrong reasons.

I knew many people years back who were starting to get into DT for the reason of shred guitars and fast playing. They didn't see the talented musical qualities of their songs. I believe that's true with many of their fans, even though it isn't really their fault. It's why I used to feel the same way.

  • How is admiring their musicianship and technicality the 'wrong reasons'? ffs

Just listen to the music that you love and don't tell other people what they ought to like and how.

  • I think you misunderstood my point...

I wasn't saying don't admire musicianship. However, I was stating there's more to music than playing fast and 'being technical', no?

Some musicians/bands could probably create the music that DT produce, but choose not to for the reasons that they might like the sound of a different style than that of them, if you catch my drift.

For the record, I don't hate DT, so don't take me as some hater.

  • There is more to music than virtuoso technique, sure, but there certainly are people who listen to music purely because of the jaw-dropping technique, and that's perfectly fine. My feelings are that the greater your technical skill, the more freedom you have with composition, since you can 'do' so much more. Dream Theater have pretty broad boundaries and a wealth of options available to them because of their technical prowess, and that's why they're awesome.

Also I don't really get your drift.

  • Can someone recommend a band similar to beyond twilight ( with similar vocals ) ? I like prog metal a lot but i can't seem to find albums that sound something like

    Symphony x - odyssey

    Beyond twilight - section x

Adagio - underworld ... Thanks in advance

  • you should check out Circus maximus, Communic, Dreamscape, Eyefear, Minds Eye or Anubis Gate (Beyond Twilight singer)

  • Thanks for the suggestion but they are not that similar, especially communic because they sound to much like nevermore and i can't stand nevermore. Vocals are intolerable to my ears although the music is killer :) Cheers

  • I like all the stuff here (was already a big fan of Shadow Gallery and Beyond Twilight) but i still cant look past DT.

Sorry if that offends some of the folk commenting previously, I do love tonnes of prog metal (Queensryche, Mastodon, Tool, Opeth, Andromeda to cite a few) but DT remains my favourite.

Folk that criticise them for being more popular than other prog bands should bear in mind that they, along with Queensryche and Fates Warning, helped create the prog metal genre.

  • Can you please give us a valid source to sustain that? Prog Metal was around years before DT was even in the mind of Portnoy and co.

  • Im aware that bands like Queensryche and Fates Warning brought prog metal to the table before DT. But DT took it to a different level.

I dont get some of the hatred displayed here toward DT. I can agree that there is plenty of breathtaking prog bands living in DTs shadow, which is unfortunate as I love the majority of Prog acts, but to hate them for that is ridiculous.

With some of the comments a few pages back you would think DT were some mainstream metal band inspiring 13 year olds

  • These bands are all pretty cool but they all sound very similar, and most of the singers sound like they're trying to be Geoff Tate (not necessarily a bad thing).

  • hell ya! love zero hour!

  • good job on Mayadome - Scent of Lilac and Shadow Gallery - Crystaline Dreams. My favorite tracks from two very underrated albums.

  • Beyond Twilight is the best band of all time.

  • opeth, DT and Evergrey are the best prog metal in my opinion

  • Try Nevermore

  • Nevermore isnt Prog

  • Comment removed

  • Who cares whether you think they deserve the label of prog or not, they are still an awesome band. They have enough likeness to these bands to be of some interest to most of the people checking these videos.

  • You're an idiot.

  • nevermore is hevay/melodic metal idk where ur gettin prog from it

  • Great to see Shadow Gallery on here. On of my all time favs!

    DT is still my fav!

  • Any attempt to a Prog Metal 'best list', without Conception, Psychotic Waltz or Sieges Even, Secrecy or Seer's Teer, is destined to be incomplete... I see that you put more american bands than european in your lists, anyway nice try.

  • Dude..... there are 9 more videos in the series...you can find all those bands in the other vids'

    browse my channel

  • actually it was only 5 years since their first album was When Dream and Day Unite, and if it wasnt for dream theater and fates warning the genre would have probably stayed vastly unknonw, noticed how much their audience disspeared when grunge came out? Still its an aswome band, and by the way you should listen to the vocal auditions for james labrie (they're up here on youtube), you would have a different opinion bout him; he just broke his vocal chords down to shit on a vacation.

  • I'd rather it stay "vastly unknown" considering that may hold respect for the genre, rather than having DT being flocked to by countless 13 year olds who think they're unique and special by listening to the most overrated metal band ever. Not to mention the fools who think they're "fans" of progressive metal by listening to one band.

  • hmmm..well dt is overrated up to some extent but i dont think its the most overrated band ever lol...and well about the fools who think their fans by only listening to 1 band i agree completly lol, i'm a dt fan my self (fav band) but i've met some dt fans that even I find talking trash to them, they can get so fking anoyin..still i'll most likely defend the band if some1 says something bout them thats not true...

  • Maybe not most overrated band, however, they're probably in such regards with the genre of Metal as a whole. Main point is, don't let one band keep you from exploring a genre. Too many DT fans use the band as a crutch to stop listening to other Progressive Metal bands.

  • Totally know what you mean, I've got a friend right now in that atitude frame...tryed to get him to hear to other bands and just keeps saying "Bah Dreamtheaters' better...bah just a dt copy" and shit like that i hate it! i might love dreamtheater but its obvious that there are pieces done by other bands and musicians that are well over dt standarts.

  • I do agree, I guess it has to do with your personality, personally I seem to find myself constantly looking for new bands, I must get bored easily : /

  • Hello! I also agree with you but when I listen to DT, I have a felling that I havent with other prog bands. I think their are really the best. But I keep listening to other bands! \m/ ^_^ \m/

  • Well that's the way to be, i may go overboard sometimes about DT, but it's just the kids who think they've heard it all when they've found out about them, they just piss me off so much.

Keep looking for new bands, probably the best thing you can do, you never know what you may find.

  • yeah DT is my all time favorite band, but i constantly search for new bands. you can't really stick to one band forever.

  • I love how as soon as anyone says anything that's not complete ass kissing praise to DT, they get at least -2.

You're right dude, DT is incredibly overrated. I thought I'd be the only person to ever say that.

  • I find it horribly amusing that right now your comment has a rating of -6.

  • Rofl, strongly seconded!

  • Also i agree with you that Dream Theater is overrated entirely, and thats sorta why i found your previous comment so amusing.

    Observational humour is great.

  • I see. I guess i understood from the beginning but decided to be a dick anyway. My apologies.

The funniest thing about reading this comment however, is how I'm reading it in the voice of Randal from Clerks. No idea why. But anyway...

  • well i love dt, like many other fans..since 1999 yeah i overrate them "proudly" ..

i also think you can add "beethoven, wagner, michael jackson, iron maiden, queen, pink floyd, rush" to that overrated bands list..so you go figure the irony

  • I see what you mean. I also agree with your list (except for Queen and Pink Floyd) about other popular, overrated bands. Dare I say the Beatles?

    *flame shield up*

  • nice to see beyond twilight here.. i love DT but you are absolutely right in saying that it is a very big genre.. i'll check ur second vid as well.i hope i find "ark" there:)

  • lol i love these bands.. olastrax..can u suggest some good prog bands?

  • prog metal or prog rock?

  • Metal. and thank you. drop away, my friend!

  • K. Well first off my fav prog metal band is Dream Theater, not because they opened the doors to the genre but simply because of my taste in music i guess.

Pain of salvation, Ayeron(The human Equation), Fates Warning, Queensryche, and venturing to other bands with prog metal influences i'd dare to say: sieges even, redemption, abydos(thought its more like rock opera), green carnation, kamelot...and there are also some power metal bands on the edges of prog metal like symphony x, angra, rhapsody

  • ..some other bands i remeber are Riverside(Second Life Syndrome) and Liquid Tension Experiment, wich is pretty much the same guys as Dream Theater lol...And well, to give the guy some credit, Andromeda, Shadow Gallery, Circus Maximus, and some other bands are pretty decent prog metal...thats all i can make up by now..later.

  • thank you so much for your time and energy

  • that's power

  • not really very proggy stuff...

  • not really knowing what u talk about right

  • I know what I'm talking about. Nowadays everyone thinks progressive is all about crazy tempo changes and "when joined" with metal, you need to have amazing joined solos between all the instruments to be progressive. Try researching a bit more. Most of the bands you show here lack a musical progression in their sound through out their carreers, the music itself does not go far from the traditional and completely out-of-date heavy-metal structures with mediocre symphonic arrangements.

  • Did you know that early when progressive wasn't as "mainstream" (not that it is nowadays) as now most prog songs where written mostly in 4/4? That there where no joined solos? As a matter of fact the style of most bands you put out here dont go very far from DT roots, and most of them sound very much similar to one-another. I'm sorry If my english is not good enough for you, but it's not my main language. Anyways, I bet you'll have a lot to say, but dont worry i wont waste time reading your reply

  • why speak if you're not going to respond to a reply? i appreciate your sharing your knowledge with us. i'd like to learn more about music in general. could you drop some names of bands that do have "amazing joined solos between all the instruments"?

  • I dont usually respond to replies when I make agressive comments to previous replies i've made because people just start insulting and not really trying to understand what I want to say. As to ur question on the bands i'm guessing its retorical and kinda sarcastic, if not most prog metal bands of nowadays seem to do so constantly, anyways ill drop some names if u were really asking.

  • Wow, I hope no one get's mad at me for saying this, but I didn't know some of these guys (I listen to Shadow Gallery though). This is some great stuff. I'll some of these guys albums. Thanks for the posting.

  • Thanks for posting, Great bands. Greetings from Colombia.

  • FUCK man no Opeth WTF!

  • Opeth isn't god

  • Well these bands certainly not

  • dude to say OPETH is not good you have to be either a deaf or a moron.

  • K kingler

  • Good selection.

  • Power or prog wuts better?!?!

  • I just got into progressive metal. I came the breakdown hardcore music.

  • That's like asking: "cheese or apples, what's better?"

Personally I'm more into prog than power but then there are quite a few bands I like which can be called both (cheese with apples, if you will); generally prog is more technical and more complex, while power metal tends to be simpler but have more feeling to it (but for me it also gets boring faster); so go listen to some bands and figure out for yourself which you like better.

  • Check out:
