This interview proves why he made the best film in the series. He doesn't even remember the name of the droids or aliens or any of the special effects stuff, but he remembers the names of the actors. The focus should be on the people, not the computer stuff.
@ibelieveihadahat Uh the focus should be on the writing, the dstory and the caracters. The plot is more important then the people, but also actors are just tools to play the caracters. Also effects are also important and the droids and aliens matter also!!!
@reviewreviewer1 Plot may be important, but characters drive the plot, and the actors drive the characters. Every element in film making is important, but if we don't care about the characters, then it doesn't matter how good the plot is because we don't care if the characters succeed.
The effects are important, but the prequels showed that using them too much clutters the frame and ruins the "special" part of them.
@ibelieveihadahat Well plots don`t have too be caracter driven, in cases like the SW films the caracters are just one a side in a largwer conflioct, even when we don`t like em, te plot still work as long as it makes sense and even better is complex and interesting. Also actors are just tools to play caracterers, they don`t drive em, they just opresent them, acting is just a caractrers excecution, a caracter is in the writing. A caracters words and actions defy him, not acting.............
@ibelieveihadahat Also what is wrong with using effects a lot, u juist need to shoot your frames wel, make them, focused. The special part idsn`t ruine if you use them a lot. They stay special cause they stay spactacular. What is wrioong with a very imaginatibe and ambitious and largly scoped film?????
@reviewreviewer1 A character is a combination of what he says and how he says. Like Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, Sure, he says some funny things, but the way Johnny Depp moves and speaks really brings the character to life. And true, not all plots are character driven, but the original Star Wars films are. It helps that the plot is interesting. The prequels show the problem with using too many effects. The focus is on the giant battles and pod races, but the plot makes no sense.

methods of directing almost apply to methods of living. Improvising when things dontwork, not giving up when things arent going your way, and taking wild chances... even if you do have to have a few drinks before it
This interview is so poignant after the reception of the prequels.
Part of filmmaking is the struggle, adapting and making concessions based on the conditions. When you put together a film digitally you can have anything you want, you don't have to make any concessions.
George Lucas is a filmmaker who needs to be reined in because if he can have it all he's going to use it all and more so rarely means better in film.
"first one is so successful, the second one should be second best." I wonder how he thinks now that Empire is considered the greatest out of all the 6
The access to infinite CGI in the prequels caused Lucas to go overboard and cram every scene full of it to the expense of everything else.

I would listen to Kershner all day. Man, this guy was a hell of an asset to the creative world.

I never knew there was a wire on C-3PO. Always thought they were hiding the guy in there, with slab below and the zoomed in shot.

what a man! Genius. George Lucas was always close to Irvin Kershner, yet so far away.

@ibelieveihadahat Alternatively, if the plot sucks, we don't care about how good the characters are because they have no reason to be there.
