IMO, Spiner wasn't really that great in any role except as Data. Whenever he went out of that character, took on other accents, or when he was Lor or Dr. Soong, he just seemed like another B-grade actor. But only Spiner could be Data.

It helps that Brent Spiner is from Houston, Texas, so the southern accent and expressions come naturally to him. He also played a bit-part as a deadpan hillbilly in some episodes of "Night Court" before he was on TNG. I think one clip is still on YouTube, if you want a chuckle. :)

I agree with redmancheyenne, he totally could have made another career doing stand-up EASY. I also agree with bk2158, TNG would have had a much harder (if not impossible) time gaining a fan base without Data.
