dame kiri is one of they finest singers ever her control and dynamic contrast is one of they best i have ever heard and she does very well for her age
This is a really tough piece to sing. It leaves you so exposed, and any slight bobble is excruciatingly apparent. She does a beautiful job, and I like the "sliding". She doesn't sing it like a boy soprano would, that's for sure. Maybe I like it I sang it like this, but not quite so seamlessly! (of course my parents thought it was perfect...)
I love Kiri. I have nothing negative to say about this performance. I can't imagine Faure would have either.
Beautiful but the sliding between notes is too obvious. Don't know if she was using it for technical reasons or expression. It's a piece in a tough tessitura for sopranos as it sits right on the break so I'm thinking the sliding was for technical reasons but I could be wrong...
Actually, I didn't think her intonation was a problem. I never thought she sounded flat, or that she slid too much (there were a couple of high notes that I wished she hadn't slid up to, but that's about it). Perhaps it's the vibrato which makes it sound flat to some. This was a studio recording actually, not a live performance - so I don't think they would have used this take if there were such obvious problems.
thanks for posting, I agree with you that probably it's the vibrato. was listening to the cd itself with a friend and we thought you were right. we enjoyed it very much, though. Her beautiful voice really conveys the feeling of peace and eternal rest. Btw do you have the cd with her singing the Maurice Durufle Pie Jesu (from the Requiem Op.9)? If so, could you please post it? i've been looking for it (recorded along with Popp singing the Faure Pie Jesu), but no luck so far.

Anybody who thinks they are musically literate enough to criticize Kiri is a pretentious moron.

Unfortunately what bothers me the most is her latin diction...she does have a wonderful voice

I think she sounds marvelous. She uses portamento, but to good musical and emotional effect and appeal. She is also quite in tune.

She must be having an off day, because she's flat to the organ and she's sliding all over the place.

She makes it SOUND easy to sing. I could never take it at this tempo and still have that kind of sound.
But I'm working at it...it's such a beautiful piece to sing.
