My dad took shorin ryu in okinawa during Vietnam... He was good friends with Phil keoppell I met him when I was younger.. Look him up.. 10th degree master
It's hard to make this understand people from other backgrounds but Kyudokan karatekas are among the best fighters in the world because of the combination of solid training and unique technique.
This is an awful example, never the less, kumite tends to be sloppy and the traditional mark on the technique is well there and tap and run is not what makes you win this type of competition, just the opposite.
from what i could see red won but blue was so much better. His technique was better and he was faster and hit the reds head more times. I think blue should have won.
tournament "Tap n run" point fighting doesn't determine who can fight or not. Notice how there aren't really any techniques that are indicative of Shorin Ryu. Foot work, stances, punching(flayling arms), not a good example of traditional fighting. If this fight were to be a heated match, where the blows have intent to harm. I am sure the technique would come out.
I agree the technique is poor specially for a (world?) semi-final. But not with the rest. Point karate is a ver good indication of who can fight or not. Competitors restrain the force of the blows but the ponctuation is there to mark the good hits. For power and focus kyudokan karate uses other practices. Kumite is therefore complementary.

I heard that Hohan Soken disliked when members did not use what they practiced.

A lot of stretching for the legs to achieve flexibilty, some co-ordination work, also do a lot of exercise on the mid section of the body.

Kyudokan is among the best of the best. The Higa Family is Legendary.
This video is proof that karate should not be used as a sport.

Martial Arts in GENERAL was meant for self defense or the art of warfare, therefore as a sport it may not be as good because it limits the techniques

AMEN! It's good to see that there are people who have understanding of TRUE martial arts!
