Golly, that looks like an awful lot of yard to mow with your earth friendly grass scissors. You should start a buy back program of all the evil gas mowers and give these away for free!! Obama are you listening.
Few Questions: 1. What are these like for big & up hill lawns? 2. Does it cut the grass to nearly the same quality as a petrol mower? 3. How do you for time in comparison to a petrol mower? ...I understand that we need to find alternative ways to cut lawns even in commercial circumstances.
This mower is awesome for my suburban lawn. I love it so much I bought my parents one. It is so quiet I can mow at 3 am when the weather cools down and the neighbors never know. It is so easy to push that with my bad knee, back, and wrists even I can still do it. Best mower i have ever owned!
I hate these things. They are really hard to push, are impossible on a hill, and if you hit a stick the blade jams and you have to waste 5 minutes taking it out and fixing the blade. That why I switched to a John Deere 5hp gasoline mower with FRONT WHEEL DRIVE!!
@appleintosh Just a piece of advice, even with a gas power mower you should pick up sticks first. Sticks will dull any blade. Plus, these lawn mowers save way more money than a $750 John Deere mower.
yeh right when your tooling along with this thing and hit a stick and do a flip over the bars you will know it. ive done that it sucks dont run with it.
an ordinary reel mower would cost $200. but the momentum is a new model so i would say it will cost 3 or 4 hundred dollars. i hope you find this helpful. :)
i can sharpen normal reels for 100 bucks, but when i sharpen the one on my gas mower with a normal double cut bastard file. the file was 4.00 i buy my spark plugs in bulk, so 16 of them are about 20 bucks. plus it is an ooold 2 stroke lawn boy. so all in all considering i have to sharpen reels once every year( because if you hit one rock it nicks the blade) it is cheaper to run my gas mower
Does anyone fave experience with a push reel on common bermuda? I have a tru-cut 20" powered reel but I want to try one of these for a little exercise. Are they effective or should I stick with the powered unit? I have 4500sf that is mowed every 2-4 days. I want it to look like a tee box. Can these units cut as well as a residential powered reel?
It adjusts from 1" to 4" height. That's what I wanted to know! No other push powered reel mower I know of will go 3", let alone 4".
My lawn will be nice & green but uneven, so I mow it using the highest setting on my current reel mower, 2", then the lawn is all brown the next day because it's too short. Aargh!!
I've spent my share of time running reels on a jacobsen F10 - I would like them to show that thing trying to cut 4 inch tall grass. It would just lay over and cut less than half of the blades.
I'll peek at that thing next time I go to lowes, out of curiosity, but it doesn't get over the real problems mowing with a reel mower:
1) you have to mow MUCH more often
2) stuff will still get away unmowed
3) leafy and tall weeds won't get touched
4) If you want a decent cut you have to go really short
@daw162 Completely agree. I have a Brill/Gardenia that I love. Pretty much the same no touch reel mower as Fiskar. I think a reel mower is a better mower but not without a power source. Some kind of engine would take care of all of the disadvantages as you can just go slower and let the blades do the work. With a push reel you have to go forward to get the reel to cut. That's why you end up with 2) and 3). You also don't need to worry about 1) with a motor. So the solution, add motor!
@fireworkstube I agree. I like the way the motorized and hydraulic reel machines work. I'm thinking about getting one of the gas powered machines for my yard - just have to find one that will let me cut at 2" and do it well.
I recall from using reels, the lower the cut, the better the job. At 3/4", grass fries fast, but it grows differently being done by reels, though, too, so at 1 1/2, maybe it'd be like a rotary mower at 2+.
@daw162 Yes your right, a reel move 'scissors' the grass without standing it up. This creates a canopy to shade the earth at a much lower height than a rotary which sucks the blades up to cut which means you need taller grass to shade the earth. My Brill is max height 43mm I think. At that height I wasn't watering my grass any more often than the neighbour.
@daw162 I just can't find a residential grade powered reel mower though. Only oldies or commercial. I'd like a Brill gas powered one, ideally. No touch, nicely built.
@fireworkstube oh yeah, almost forgot, a motor would take care of small sticks, too, which ruin your day with a push powered mower.
The thing that stopped me most often on a jacobsen F10? Ground hog carcasses!! Had to turn the reel to get them back out.
Even though it was ground driven, it would cut a golf ball in half and fling the top out through the reels like nothing - just heard a "clang" when it did it.
@daw162 OMG, I tottaly agree with you, I have a reel mower and it won't cut longer grass ends up making a crapy job. Thinking to go back to gas. Was hoping to find a video that shows how to cut longer grass but did'nt find any ;-(
If you really wanted to go green you would plant a garden there. I love reel mowers, even though I believe that man caused climate change is a massive power grab, and will wind up being the biggest theft in history. If something was really killing us, like these chicken-little, Gore worshiping, people keep saying, then the solution would be a BAN, not a TAX.
@poopstreek Just fyi. Going green is about creating a healthier environment - simply clean air and water. Maybe we are not causing global warming, but we are causing costly health problems; cancer, respiratory, etc. thanks to what we put in the air, our water, and the food chains that we inevitably eat.
I may get rid of my crap gas mower that always blows grass in my face with the bag installed. This would be a good way to go since I mow weekly. No more gas.
Yea, I'm not big on all this eco-hype stuff, but this mower probably makes a lot of financial sense. There would be virtually no maintenance or fuel costs, so the initial purchase price is basically all you'd ever have to spend on this thing. But, I think since they're so new and really being reinvented right now with all the new design features, their price is still high and that keeps a lot of people away.
I bought this mower from "people powered machines" -- and it cuts some grass, but merely pushes over a lot of it. No, it wasn't too long. Here's the response from the seller of this product to a question about why it wasn't working:
"You might have to get a power mower for the first cut and then maintain with the Fiskars." Now, why would I buy a power mower first, to then buy this to maintain?
I have a reel mower and it's adjustable, so not sure what fiskars is referring to. I also wish this fiskars had a wider cut. they didn't exactly explain how it cuts without the blades touching either. looks good to me but pricey - should be 150.00
i would not buy anything from these Lowe's people they have the worst customer service ever...what a nightmare...these people will say anything just so they do not have to help you....they want your money but what u get in return is HELL.
Well, I'm sold. I've been looking for a good reel mower for quite some time now. This one looks excellent. I just hope they sell it at the Lowes in Canada.
id rather stick to my gas mower

This mower can't bag like a rotary, and you put a lot of effort downwards to push it, leaving tracks on moist soil. No thanks.
