I find your reply comments here even more interesting than your promotional video, Marc. You are a fine example of how a stage entertainer can still be an ethical hypnotist who maintains certin standards even with adult-oriented programs. Keep up the good work, sir!
It seems like you were being evasive when it came to my questions pertaining to state of trance and a subjects inability to refuse a suggestion. Do you not want to talk about hypnosis anymore?
@philbio66 of course not! I love talking hypnosis. It was my daughter's birthday this past weekend and we took 3 whole days to build a backyard swing set that she received as a gift. I apologize that it has taken me long to respond. I do have some committments outside of chatting on YouTube. ;-) I'm sure you understand?
@philbio66 All of these routines/suggestions as I previously stated below in my earlier responses are all open ended and generalized. In each of the routines you have mentioned here, there have been multiple times where participants have not carried out the suggestions and the routine has failed. All of my routines have an out for the individual(s). I have not, and will not coax, push, manipulate any of my volunteers in my show. The people take the suggestions to their own comfort level ...
OK. Fair enough but can tell me how you would pharse the suggestion for one of those skits? We both know that many deep trance and somnambulistic subjects may not be capable of refusing a suggestion. I can't imagine if a straight guy saw a video of the man slow dance speedo skit he would be thinking I'd love to do that while hypnotized.
@philbio66 Taken out of context of the show, the environment, and the reason why everyone is there, of course. But I think you are missing the point of WHY the people come to the show. To either watch, or participate in these exact ridiculous scenarios. You absolutely need to come and see the show for yourself and then we can have discussions about the exact same show, same people, same suggestions, everything else we discuss here is speculation. Right?
It is speculation but I'm sure you know that everyone who volunteers isn't doing so because they want to perform ridiculous acts. There are people who think hypnosis is fake or that they can't be hypnotized or they will be able to control. The bottom line is that there are always deep trance and somnambulistic subjectys who won't be able to refuse suggestions.
@philbio66 Not true. In the past 17 years of me doing hypnosis, almost every routine I have performed has had someone at some time refuse the suggestion completely. Even the deepest somnabulists. Could I have pressed the issue and reworded the suggestion to get the desired result? Yes. That is where the moral issues of the hypnotist come in. Sad part? Some hypnotists have more morals and respect that others. This is the true issue. But, that happens in life. Not all Doctors are morally
Marc, I never said ALL deep trance and somnambulistic subjects can't refuse suggestions. I said there will always be subjects who won't be able to refuse suggestions.
@philbio66 ...responsible. NOT all school teachers, priests, police officers have moral fortitude. Maybe we as humans have the tendency to lean towards the "dark side" more than we should as a whole?
@philbio66 ...and that has proved extremely effective and provided for an awesome experience for the people participating. I would love for you to see my show/style sometime. I think that it will do two things, get a vibe for the "safe environment" that my show has, as well as it will probably bring up 1000 other questions and thoughts which I welcome. Thanks again for watching, and this debate.
p.s. Wiener Shack was a routine that I hated and it only last a short time and I removed it.
@philbio66 I hated that routine, cause it was not mine. Not my idea, the producer loved it, came up with it, I didn't think it was funny at all and did feel it was not a fair situation for the volunteer for all the same reasons we have previously discussed. I did it for 2 weeks as per his request, then removed it from the show.
So are you saying that the suggestion was not indirect and generalize for the "weiner shack" skit? You're 100% positive none of women had a problem with it after coming out of trance?
@philbio66 No. Not saying that at all. I didn't like it because even though there were no direct suggestions, all indirect, I still felt that the routine was entrapping to the volunteers and gave no room for their interpretation or a way out for them. So, I pulled it out of the show. I never heard of anyone having a problem with it, but that didn't matter, cause I did have a problem with it. That's why it is no longer in the show and hasn't been for over 3 years.
That doesn't make sense. if was an indirect suggestion how could it not be open to their interptretaion and why couldn't they just refuse the suggestion? Since you no longer use it in you your show could you tell me what the suggestion was?
@philbio66 Because the concept was they were at a drive through of the Weiner Shack. I played the role of the employee on the speaker. They ordered and bantered back and forth. I asked stupid questions that had double meanings. They answered whatever they wanted. Sometimes funny, sometimes not. The part that I was not ok with, was the suggestion was that the wiener shack guy was 'invisible' to them. They ordered from the microphone. I didn't think it was fair to put them in that...
@philbio66 ...compromising situation. They could answer however they wanted, some answered straight laced, others very sexual cause their minds and personalities played into it. But they did not have the choice of getting away from the half naked guy "invisibly" in the window. Didn't sit well with me. I over ruled the producer's office and took it out.
Good for you. Why do you think some subjects answers were straight forward and others picked up on the double entendres and gave answers with sexual overtones?
@philbio66 I believe it has everything to do with their natural personality and tendencies. Just as if you were to put 10 friends of yours in a room and you answer a question and say something like "Just wait, I'm coming" and 3 or 4 of them will have some off-color remark.
OK. I guess I was wondering more how they picked up on the sexual innuendos while in trance since the “weiner guy” was invisible to them. Were the double meanings that obvious to them even if they could see the “weiner guy”?
@philbio66 I figure a couple of ways. 1.) It's called the Weiner Shack. 2.)The questions were leading and had double meanings. 3.) Just cause they are hypnotized some people will still consciously see the weiner guy, but their subconscious will not allow them to 'consciously register it'. So it may still provide an underlying suggestion of his presence. With a combination of the three, there was plenty of 'suggestive direction' which is why I did not like the routine.
The reviewer also told me that on one occasion a guy went ballistc when he saw the himself on video sucking off a beer bottle while pretending it was a man's penis. The guy was so angry Cools actually had to try to calm him down.
Have you seen Anthony Cools' show? I would think he gives warnings at the beginning of his show. I had a conversation with a journalist who had seen and reviewed the show a number of times. I asked him how people reacted when they see what they did on video. He said many people seemed fine with their performances but he said there were women who were horrified when they saw what they themselves performing in the porno audition routine.
@philbio66 I cannot really comment because I wasn't there. No idea how the suggestion was structured, the rapport between the hypnotist and the participant. I believe that the rapport dictates the feeling, comfort level or feeling of that safe environment, as well as the rapport with the audience. If any hypnotist personality comes across as deceptive or slimey, it doesn't matter if the routine is to make the person cluck like a chicken, the person will feel taken advantage of and be upset.
As for the suggestion, he basicly told the men they were now women and as women they loveed to suck on men's johnsons. He told the women they were now men and very proud of big johnsons. You get the idea. Regardless of how the suggestion was structured he ended up doing something he wouldn't have agreed to do in a fully conscious state. As for building rapport, isn't that what hypnostists do to gain peoples' trust and put them at ease so that they can manipulated while in trance.
@philbio66 Yeah. That's pretty direct suggestions, yikes. Yes, rapport is a major part of developing that relationship, but I think that "manipulated in trance" is a pretty harsh term and incorrect term that shouldn't be generalized to all hypnotist or hypnosis.
I'm not saying it applies to you or all hypnotists but isn't manipulation key to certain skits like getting a person to eat an onion believing it's an apple. Don't some hypnotitsts get people to accept certain suggestions by creating a need or desire to carry out the sugestion?
@philbio66 Curious, what would you say is unethical? I'm not asking in a defensive way, everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, I'm curious, and this thread could make for some interesting conversation. Thank you for watching.
@philbio66 I would agree with that. However, remember that everyone who is in attendance know what to expect when coming to any type of hypnosis show. Also, there are plenty of notices to the audience about what to expect during the show. Everybody on stage is there on a volunteer basis and know what to expect.
What type of notices or warnings are given to the audiences? How specific are the notices/warnings? Though most people are willing volunteers I don’t believe they are aware of the true nature of hypnosis and the complete loss of control they could experience.
@philbio66 Great question. We have an information/warning/fun video that comes up at the beginning of the show that states that the show has adult humor, things that are not politically correct, and that if they are offended easily that they should not participate. Once I get onstage, I also give more than ample warnings about the movement on stage, the age limits, and what the audience can expect during the show. There is also a video playing outside the theater that shows highlights of...
@philbio66 ...the show and what the previous shows have looked like. My approach to the show is casual and silly. The audience and participants that attend these types of shows are usual in a mindset to let loose and have fun. Of course there are boundaries that we abide by, such as no nudity, no inappropriate contact between participants, etc. In the past 3 years of performing in Vegas, we have had one complaint about the material, and that was because someone lied about their age and...
@philbio66 ...went on stage even after clearly hearing the age limit of 18. There was no way of us knowing that, so once we found halfway through the show, we removed the 17 year old from the performance. No incidences since. The show is silly, yes. The show has adult content, yes. The show has ample warnings, yes. The show is not purposely degrading and the audience feels that, and that seems to be okay with almost 100% who attend.
Telling a volunteer that the show has adult humor and is not politically correct is somewhat vague and ambiguous. Do you specifically tell people what they could end up doing on stage such as telling them they could end up performing simulated sex acts?
Do you not think there’s any disconnect for some the volunteers even though they’ve been warned and have seen video footage. There’s always people who volunteer thinking that hypnosis is fake, they can’t be hypnotized, they’ll be able to control it and refuse any suggestion and come out of trance at anytime they choose. I say this because contrary to what many hypnotists publicly state, there are subjects who feel embarrassed, humiliated and ashamed of what they did while hypnotized.
@philbio66 It is hard to answer the question about disconnect, cause there is no possible way I could know what every person in that audience is feeling. Can people feel embarassed? Sure. Do they at my show? I rarely see it, if not ever see it. I think the reason is because of how the suggestions are structured. I am very passive, in giving a scenario. My style is very playful, light, and humorus and the suggestions are very open to participant interpretation. When you see my show, there are MANY instances that the volunteers may not respond to the suggestion because of an underlying circumstance. For example, I had a girl not perform in the lollipop licking championship. I asked her why...
@philbio66 ...afterwards. Her response was, "My mom is here" That was funnier to the audience than the actual routine. Pushing someone into something that they will regret after the show does not sit right with me. In my show, we all have fun together and I have built a reputation of being a nice guy in the industry. Not going to ruin it to get a cheap laugh at someone's expense. The volunteers and I are in this performance together.
It's good that you leave suggestions like that open to interpretation. It's odd that she would volunteer for an "adult show" but not wanting to perform "adult" acts because her mother was in the audience. Do you recall if she was in a hypnoidal state of trance when she volunteered? Was she a deep trance subject? It's also makes brings we back to an ealier question - How explicit are your warnings about the skits in your show?
