You got the lessons and history books that I did in school. But Harding tore down the military-industrial complex of his day -- that of Bernard Baruch during World War One -- in his returning us to "normalcy" - Harding said that if there was another war he would DRAFT THE CORPORATIONS at soldier's pay - since they are legal persons! -- to ensure there would be no war profiteering to keep the war going like we've got now.
You have to be suspicious when the elites call a man our "worst president
Warren Harding was a good president. During his 29 months in office he cleaned up much of the hatred and chaos generated by the Woodrow Wilson administration.
He also got us to stop wasting vast amounts of oil and steel in a naval arms race. Check out the 1921-1922 Washington Naval Conference.
Establishment has given Warren Harding almost 90 years of bad press because he cancelled the construction of thier battleship fleet and refused to bind us to the League of Nations.
After Obama, Harding is looking damn good. Read John Dean's book on Harding. Harding did make advances in civil rights, veteran's pensions, and he balanced the federal budget. (Dean says, "What more do you want?") He was not a "scholar" like Wilson, but unlike Wilson he kept us out of political infighting in Europe throughout the 20's. He trusted his friends and that was his downfall. Not a great President, but not the disaster he has been tagged.
@sweetcurmudgeon Ah yes - the Obama bots attack again when their hero's faults are mentioned. How's hope and change working out in your neck of the woods? If you are on welfare, you are happy. If you live off of others via medicaid, you are happy. Otherwise, we now see Rush and Beck were right. Remember, Obama said pass the stimulus and unemployment won't go above 8 percent. He also said health care care costs would decrease 3,000 percent. How can something decrease more than 100%?
@LuckyBlueEyez And people in Harding's day were shocked the President had an affair on the side. Well, Wilson had an affair, so did FDR, and Clinton. One thing about Nixon - he was loyal to Pat.
REALLY????...the man before harding was the worst president ever...what did wilson give us? The federal reserve, the income tax, involvement in WWI, segregation and racism, drug prohibition, nationalized railroads, stronger unions thanks to government regulations, internationalism and the League of Nations, the draft...open your eyes and stop being such a democrat...he even put eugene debbs (socialist) in jail for being against the war, harding (conservative rep) later pardoned him
this has got to be one of the most retarded videos i have ever seen...
you could make a point for Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, Bush, Nixon and Obama as the worst presidents ever...but, youtube wouldnt allow the time needed for each one; hell, a 300 page text book wouldnt have the room (without pictures and graphs)...
im taking it you are a Liberal?
the video title itself shows how great a president he was ..."thanks for NOTHING"...leaving us with NOTHING is a great feat...
America's greatest depression fighter was Warren Gamaliel Harding. Harding inherited Wilson's mess, depression that was almost as severe, as the Great Depression. The Roaring Twenties were a time of unprecedented prosperity. GNP expanded without inflation. Productivity improved, and real wages increased. The stock market tripled. There was a expansion of the middle class. The pro-growth policies are directly responsible for the astonishingly rapid growth in prosperity throughout the Roaring 20s.
I don't trust the media and the way they constantly tell us that Harding was a horrible president which makes me think he was knocked off in 1923 and they're still driving his reputation through the mud. He believed in America first, and for the foreign bankers, he had to go, one way or another.
I'm starting to think that Harding was a good president, since the fixed media is still trying to muddy his reputation. As they still try to push on us Jimmy Carter, Woodrew Wilson and Lyndon Johnson as good presidents.
A corrupt lazy politician who spent all his time playing golf, cards chasing women and paying bribes. If that compares to Jimmy Carter let me know. Wilson was horrible and Johnson a murderer but don't put Carter with these criminals.
Carter was not a monster like Johnson or Wilson but he was ill equipped to be president, and the ONLY reason he won the election of '76 was because Ford pardoned Nixon. The reasons why we are having problems with Iran today go back to Jimmy Carter's fumbling foreign policy
A totally reckless uninformed comment about Iran if you know about the relations at the time. . It is like saying Clinton could have gotten Osama and and Bush couldn't get him in 8 years therefore, it's Clinton's fault. Carter's plan to get us off Arab oil in 76 should have been heeded instead of hiring the actor to stop progress.
Produced a government so efficient that it created the first budget surplus since the implementation of the federal income tax. Pardoned practically everyone that was still in prison as a result of running afoul of Woodrow Wilson's Espionage and Sedition Acts.
Assembled a cabinet composed of some of the most sidely respected men if his time including Charles Evans Hughes as Secretary of State, Andrew Mellon at Treasury, and Herber Hoover as Secretary of Commerce. Established the Veteran's Bureau, which later became the Department of Veterans' Affairs. Convened the first modern international disarmament conference, the Washington Naval Conference.
You are very muchg mistaken in assigning "the worst president ever" to Harding; he wasn't responsible for the murder of millions, such as Woodrow Wilson, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, George W Bush were, or responsible for the daily atrocities of the Bush and Obama gangs of thieves and liars.
@john48martin Woodrow Wilson was the worst president in history. HArding's pardon of the political prisoners imprisoned by Wilson, his arms reduction and control, his rejection of the appalling League of Nations, his non- interventionist foreign policy, his quick solving of the economic depression left by WIlson and his good heart all make him a better president than most,
why do you leave out the most corrupt polititician and ohio gang? His utter incomptence and to quote Warren Harding " I wasn't qualified for the Presidency"
I'd prefer someone who believes they aren't qualified for the presidency then someone who feels they are. The founders didn't serve because they wanted to or thought they would be best for it, they served as presidents because they were asked to by the people. Someone who doesn't think they are qualified is probably gonna do better for the nation then someone who believes they are qualified, which is why we are in the current state we are in, we haven't had a servant for President
Maybe I need to learn more about him, but he wasn't the worst ever. He messed up by being a crook, and letting his friends help run the country, but other than that, what else bad did he do? Please tell me.
I think the worst thing he did was trust his Ohio buddies to help run things while he played golf. He might have had good intentions, but he trusted the wrong people...
He really was probably, in terms of raw intelligence, the "dumbest" US President ever. Yes, despite jokers, he was almost certainly less intelligent than George W. Bush. This is one of his problems. He was intellectually lazy and wouldn't read, couldn't understand or keep up with half of what was presented to him.
But worst? There are US Presidents with bigger body counts of innocent lives than him. His immediate predecessor Wilson killed more innocent people for no reason in other countries.
Personally Warren Harding was not a crook. Perhaps some of his friends were, but Harding loved his country and respected the office of the presidency. He told several people that he didn't feel qualified for the job, but he did a good job as president for the short time he was in office. Some White House aids have said that he was the hardest working president, and would be busy working in his office after 2:00 a.m.
rubbish, what he was doing in his office after 2am isn't fit to print. One senator caught him answering letters to crazy people and Harding replied he wasn't fit for the job and he wasn't. He was looking for a good time. Not evil just stupid.
i have not but plan to read this book. Review says it is very detailed and the love letters it alludes to have since been published. Warren has totally been outed
The only good things FDR ever did was entering WWII (which helped turn America into a military superpower) and listening to Einstein about how the US needed nukes before ze Nazis. But then again, everyone would've done the same thing...
What a joke. That is not Harding's wife you have in the video. You don't know much about Harding since you have no idea what his wife looks like. Furhter more Harding is not the worst president. I suggest you read book by Robert Ferrell, The Strange deaths of President Harding. It may enlighten you. We would not be in the mess we are in now if we had Harding as pesdident. I suggest you visit Marion Ohio and see the Harding home, museum, and grave monument. I have twice..
The Democrats have always been the bigger thieves. And the party of Slavery. Now they are the party of Dead Babies. Obama is for killing babies AFTER THEY ARE BORN, because protecting babies AFTER birth would threaten the "right" to kill them before birth.
Republicans have let their corporate interests rule this country and money is their only God. The Dixiecrats were the party of Slavery. Now they have all turned to Republicans., duh, alabama, texas, mississippi, etc. Obama is NOT for killing babies. you get your misinformation from Fox News like all Republicans.
FDR stole billions from the public by raising the price of gold from $20 to $35/oz. AFTER mandating that all citizens sell all their gold to the govt. for $20/oz. Thief. FDR kept the Depression going from 1933 to 1945. (In other words, his entire term.) (No, the war did not end the Depression! That is economic nonsense. The war employed lots of people, but they weren't creating real wealth. You couldn't afford a car in 1933, and you couldn't buy a car in 1945.)
Ha ha! I'm glad I'm not the only FDR hater out there. You were right. He was a thief, and a crook. He spearheaded the deprivation of the dollar's worth. On my list he is tied with Millard Filmore for the worst president ever. Teddy on the otherhand, in the top five.
Harding reduced the top rate of the income tax from 70% to 56%. The economy came out of the Depression of 1919-1920, and revenues increased, and the deficit was reduced. Coolidge cut the top rate to 25%. The economy grew, revenue increased, and there was a surplus each year. Hoover increased the income tax to 63%, and Roosevelt raised it to 89%, prolonging the Depression. Harding and Coolidge cut taxes and promoted growth, and they are smeared.
Nice research there. I think Harding is only smeared because of the corruption in his administration. Coolige, on the other hand, is always ranked as one of our worst Presidents, but I liked his style. He believed in very minimal federal governement intervention. Now all we have is federal government intrusion on everything from education to transportation. People wonder why everything is so screwed up. Big governement began with FDR, Then later LBJ just expanded it and it's grown ever since.
Nice try bob, but you are talking to a pretty informed group here who now know that Republican mishandling of our government and throwing away Teddy Roosevelt's progressive policies and letting big corporations run amuck thrust us into the Great Depression. Remember that one?
Warren G. Harding became a United States Senator with a six year term and was in that office when he ran for president in 1920. He campaigned similar to William McKinley using a front porch campaign. Warren G. Harding carried 37 of the 48 states, with 404 electoral votes to opponent with 127. The most overwhelming electoral voctory in a hundred years. Everyone including movie stars came to Marion to meet this remarkable man.
A President is not judged by how many movie stars shook his hand. Harding was a moron but you are right he looked good was charming and didn't know a thing about running the government, but hell you probably voted for Reagan.
Warren G. Harding fought for and finally was able to convince the Steel Corporation to set an example and abolish the twelve hour working shift and the seven day working week. Harding kept fighting for the reduction of hours until finally on August 2, 1923, Judge Gary as president of the American Iron and Steel Institute announced that the elimination of the twelve hour day would begin at once.
When a penniless girl from one of Marion's side streets, was taken with tuberculosis, Harding arranged for her to travel on a pass to Boulder, Colorado, and it was characteristic of his unassuming kindness that he paid her way to Colorado Sanitarium for the year that she had to live.
As a hoosier I am proud of Warren G. Harding. By the way that is not Florence Harding in the video. Harding was pushing for the world court before his death. He was for world peace similar to Woodrow Wilson's league of nations. Harding pardoned hoosier socialist Eugene Debs and invited him to the white house. I feel fortunate to having the oportunity to visit the Harding home and monument twice. This video is unfair and an injustice to a great man...
You've got it wrong; George W Bush will be found to be the worst president of all time, with that self righteous, bigoted control freak Woodrow Wilson a close second for bottom of the barrel.
I visited his memorial today in Stanley Park, where he spoke to 40,000 people in 1923. It's quite big, about 9 meters long, made of granite and bronze, although nobody really stops to look at it. It's on a flatbelt above the Malkin Bowl, where I suspect people clamour over it on Sunday nights for a view of the stage. If you ever visit Vancouver, look for the memorial in Stanley Park. It's not hard to find, though many do not know its there.
I would guess that Harding was among the 8 worst Presidents that we have ever had. There is bunch in the same level...terrible...Harding, Pierce, Buchanon, Taylor, Grant, Van Buren, A. Johnson, Carter,..Just a batch of really people who wanted to do well ..But did not have the ability.
I never said Harding was a great president. Fact is, the man was overwhelmed early on and his so called friends he thought he could trust fucked him over and left him with a bad leagacy. He was though a good decent man that did his best in the time given him. We are still proud of him here in Marion.
If you would actually watch the video instead of just reading the title, you will see that there nothing really at all said against harding, this was just a video about harding, not one that bashes him.
What a total lack of respect for a man that served as our commander and chief. He had only 2 years in office before his premature death. I live in his home town of Marion Ohio, and less than 10 min from his tomb where my little girl likes to ride her bike. We are proud of him here.
The Conventional Wisdom ranks Presidents as "great" based on how many Americans get slaughtered during their term. Since, under Lincoln, Americans slaughtered EACH OTHER, Lincoln is the greatest President. FDR and Wilson rank next. Vietnam doesn't count, because we were fighting Communists. Reagan is the worst President of all time, because he managed to defeat Communism without getting Americans slaughtered. So that's two counts against him. And he cut tax rates on "the rich." Monster!
What's next? You gonna tell us all how great Herbert Hoover was too? This country was fumbled around with and screwed up pretty much from the time Cleveland left office until FDR came in (Teddy did well).
You said it best. I think many people come to this site who live in Marion, Ohio and feel a sentimental attachment to warren. For them I feel sorry but reality and history has proven beyond any doubt that Warren didn't know what the hell he was doing and wanted to have a good time, gamble, golf, womanize, drink and be a good ole boy. that he was, good President, not so much.
I do not reside in Ohio and feel a sentimental attachment to Warren G. Harding. I have visited Marion Ohio, and it is one of the better cities in the country. They have a lot to be proud of ther than Warren Harding. I am sure however that Marion Ohio is proud of Warren Harding. There are people who admire Harding and reside all over the entire world. If all the people who admired Warren Harding lived in Marion Ohio, it would be a small world indeed!
This was pretty useless.

We are proud of him here.

wikipedia says he is ranked as the worst president of all time

The Conventional Wisdom ranks Presidents as "great" based on how many Americans get slaughtered during their term. Since, under Lincoln, Americans slaughtered EACH OTHER, Lincoln is the greatest President. FDR and Wilson rank next. Vietnam doesn't count, because we were fighting Communists. Reagan is the worst President of all time, because he managed to defeat Communism without getting Americans slaughtered. So that's two counts against him. And he cut tax rates on "the rich." Monster!

I agree, except for FDR is tied with Lincoln for #1. Don't forget Teddy Roosevelt though.
