no the ping pong balls do not need to be lit with a flame or constantly. They are very flammable. They are made from celluloid which is actually listed as a hazardous material because it is so flammable.

Don't use pingpong balls for anything other than entertainment, you're burning plastic and it is toxic. Use a caramelized mix of suger and potassium nitrate. It's much safer.

No, the plastic it is made from is called Cellulose or sumthing like that i think, its highly flammable and when wrapped in a substance such as foil, produces a lot of smoke.

yes, it has to be ping pong balls. ping pong balls are made out of something called celluliod. Celluliod is highly flammable, a lot more then plastic. Some types of celluliod are actually labeled as low powered explosives.
