The agency assured JFK that the exhile-led invasion would work, knowing full well that it wouldn't.

JFK told them that he would not and could not send US military into Cuba if the exhiles failed.

The CIA thought they could manipulate JFK into sending in American firepower anyway, once the exhiles failed, but he stood his ground.

It was this event which told Kennedy that the CIA was trying to set policy on its own.

A few clarifications: Halderman stated in his book that the bay of pigs comment WAS a code for the Kennedy killing. It is of note that E Howard Hunt admitted foreknowledge of the plot in a taped death bed confession. He said he was on a back up team. So it could have led to that.

The U.S. had already invaded Cuba once with Playa Giron. The U.S. is known for controlling and exploiting countries in Latin America under the Monroe Doctrine, in Guatemala, Chile, Nicaragua, Grenada, Honduras, Cuba-pre (Castro), etc. The missiles would have been in place as a defense measure because the U.S would have been suicidal to invade again had they actually been on Cuban soil. The point was not a matter of hypocrazy really: on both the US and USSR sides, it was "don't do anything more with nuclear weapons, please. If you do, we'll have to defend ourselves with an equal threat, and that increases the likelihood that something will go awry." There is no way of knowing one way or the other whether Cuba would have in fact used these weapons on the U.S. I still think that with them in place, Cuba would be safe from another U.S. attack and it was primarily a defensive move. Either way the world is still intact so all is well.

No seriously: nuclear weapons is a really bad fucking idea. The U.S. shouldn't have them either. However, the big reason that the missile crisis was really bad is that these missiles were Soviet missiles that were in Cuba onluy because of alliances and strategic position.

Back then, it wasn't totally clear if Cuba would use the weapons, but more recently, people say that had JFK not refused an air strike, the missile would almost certainly have been launched, according to documents, etc.

Hughes also sent contributions to the Republicans. They were also trying to dig up dirt on Kennedy in some car accident he got into.
