I heard in an interview that Bea resented the hell out of Betty for winning the first emmy award. I love the character she played of Dorothy but from what I hear I don't much care for Bea Arthur but I LOVE Betty White.

Bea Arthur didn't like Betty White because Bea Arthur was Broadway and Betty White came out of television and did dinner theater. It came down to the stories they would tell and Bea Arthur was a bit stuck up in that regard.

@Jeffrizel1986 She's more popular now, but Bea was more popular during the Golden Girls following her success on Maude. Betty was around for longer so I think Betty might've felt a little threatened by Bea.

@SoulSir You're certainly entitled to your own opinion. I feel like Bea was the better character on the show. She was followed by Sophia, then Rose and finally Blanche; although I love all of them. The Golden Palace didn't mix because they were missing Bea. When Bea made a guest appearance, that was the only time I laughed watching the Golden Palace. The three other girls were hilarious, but Bea made the show imo, and the Golden Palace is evidence of that.

@millers3888 My facts & the rating, don't come from opinion...the golden girls ran its course, so it was a matter of time before the show was canceled & had Bea stayed, that wouldn't of made a difference. Betty added the accent of laughter to the show while Bea, introduced dry humor to us viewers

Well Betty White is 90 now, so she might not be as with it as she used to be. As for Bea and Betty, I always found Betty to be the one with the ego. Like if you watch the Golden Girls bloopers, Bea seemed very quite and giggled when she messed up while Betty just acted more diva-ish. I dunno, my opinion.

Plus, I think Bea did have a bit of an ego (most actors do). I also don't think it helped matters that Bea was the "headliner" of the ensemble, but Betty and Rue won Emmys first, etc. Rue also said Bea seemed somewhat unhappy in her personal life around the time of the show (Bea has mentioned that she was drinking a lot and taking care of her dying mother the first few seasons), so there's probably a whole lot we don't know. The show was certainly never affected bit it, nor the chemistry, imo.

All we can do is speculate, but as some have said here it was just a personality clash, but not a huge one. In Rue's autobiography, she said that Bea and Betty's relationship was not as great as it could have been, mainly b/c Betty joked constantly, pulled pranks and was extroverted. Bea is shy and introverted, and got tired of it. Publicly, Bea never said a negative thing about Betty, and on the reunion show called the cast "four damn good actresses." I think it was just personality difference

Wow, both Betty and Rue had criticized Bea. These women (Bea, Betty, and Rue), to a degree, were full of it. When the show's on, they told the media they always got along. But clearly, that's not the case at all. Rue said in an E! interview that Bea enjoyed being the center of attention. That's clearly a criticism (Rue's talking about Bea leaving GG). And now Betty White's telling us how Bea did not like her in this video. I guess you can never trust any actress.

Bea was a stage actress & treated the set of the Golden Girls the same way she treated the Broadway stage, by not acknowledging the audience. Betty on the other hand was very talkative & flirtatious with them. In an interview with Barbara Walters she mentions how Bea would put up with her horsing around for so long, then reel her in. I think when it came to Bea's craft there was no fooling around. She may not have been fond of Betty on a professional level. But I think she liked her.

Bea Arthur was a little uppity when it came to acting. Bea came from the Theatre and despite her great success in Television never really respected the medium very much. Betty was never a theatre actress having started in television from the time it was still an experiment. The difference in their acting styles is actually obvious if you pay attention and Bea just didn't think much of Betty. But they still worked so well together!

@NMBeauty I believe you are right, I think that they all had a mutual respect for each other as actresses, and loved working with each other on the show. But I do think that over time Bea grew tired of Betty's personality, which considering the length of time they worked together, is understandable. I love all four of them, and I love Betty's personality. It's just that Bea wasn't as extroverted as Betty, which probably factored in this. (Angela Lansbury spoke about Bea's personality on a show).
