Oh, this brings back wonderful memories. I was sitting in my dorm room in '79 trying to decide whether I liked the Flying Lizards or not, and whether I was glad I'd spent the money on this or not. It was when the trombone solo on this song kicked when I realized I loved them.
Spoken lyrics: "Oh, you're sooo strong..." I've told you before..You've made me so sore..." Elton John's style With an eagle profile Small screen smile Coquille St. Jaques I think you're very, very, very, Very, very, very, very, very, very... Etends moi Au dessous de toi Je suis une sphinx Les genoux a chacque cote De vos cuisses It won't take long Oh you're so strong Recline in my seat Back in this heat In my white convertible There's nothing left to do
Classic! This is actually about a 4 minute song. Because at the end fade, the guy just keeps saying very....very....very..... very. I played this on my show at KROQ, LA, when it was released and our goofy listeners couldn't get enough of it. So, I played it till the grooves turned white. Always got calls asking about it, mostly from women who loved it, especially the lines spoken in French. Cir, 1980. Ahhh, the good old days for FM radio. I still have the original 45 single. Gere
I think part of what hurt the Flying Lizards was the Waitresses essentially doing the same thing with that talking over monochromatic music. Even Fred Schneider does something much the same for the B-52's.
But what they were considered cute, charming and even kitsch, for some reason the Flying Lizards were considered disturbing.
And it didn't help later in the decade when another group came out with a very similar sounding name, the Flaming Lips.
I remember hearing this for the first time (late 70's?) A friend brought the album to a party and we piled a bunch of LPs on top of the old record changer. When it dropped onto the turn table, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Some people hated it but I gave it a chance and it grew on me. The second side is more bizarre though.
I remember as a teenager, this record annoying the fuck out of my mum as she was driving. The 'very' bit nearly drove her to distraction. Haven't heard it since, didn't even know what it was called. Still laugh about it now.
The 70's over, I was so hoping that music like this that was in the clubs at the beginning of the new decade would fare as the frontier of Rock and Roll.
No, instead the fates (or timorous radio programmers) decided differently and just look at what we have had since.
How could anyone fail to see the fun and sense of abandon in this?
but the fact is that todays music doesnt hav the snazz that the classics and one hit wonders have....except from a few bands
even though we can accept the fact that they make music, the artists of today such as miley cyrus, ke$ha, justin beiber, etc. we can all agree that they suck.
Play some oldies crap!! Plz!
I dont care if they r house tracks or classic rock or metal or indie or something...
Yes, it's a period memory song for me. I remember trying to decide whether I liked it or not, and when the trombone solo kicked it, it was a definite yes!
They ended the song to early. The guy actually says "very" about another 6 or 7 times. Its really funny. A much as I loved the Lizzards their best Pop chart effort "Money" only reached #50 on the BillBoard Top 40 in 1979. "....in my white converti- ble...ble...ble...."
I played this at KROQ in L.A and it remains a period memory song for me. 1980 was really a pivotal year for many of us. I just have to hear it sometimes. Thanks for posting, Gere
