Die hard Devils fan who's watched Brodeur's entire career...Roy is the greatest. Marty is fantastic, but Roy was always the superstar of his team. For me, it goes Roy, Sawchuk, Hasek, Plante, Brodeur, Hall, Esposito, Hainsworth, Dryden, Tretiak.
I also wish there could be some more acrobatic goalies aruound in the leauge but we still have Brodeur and thomas for a short time.. soon there will be no more varity in NHL goalies style but i beleave Roy has alot to do with that he is the one who paved the way to todays V style goaltenders he changed the way goalies play hockey today that is why i think he is the best goalie to play the game
I hate how in todays NHL we don`t see that many wild style acrobatic goalies anymore, like Cujo, Roy, Hasek, etc the only one I could think of is Thomas and soon he will retire, the rest all play square and aren`t floppy.
Great vid, but his best time was when he played for the habs, especially when habs won the cup in '93. Roy won the cup. He was not only phenomenal for the saves, but he was even greater to handle the pressure. He was at his best in overtime in stanley cup series. In 1992, habs won 12 overtimes, think about Roy, the saves he had to make.In an interview Roy said "best preparation for a golaie is to play for a sucky team, just before to make the NHL. You eat the puck and you get better..."
@cosanostracz ....and you know this.... because....? you're one of those players?
While I am an admittedly biased Patrick Roy fan, I'd say nowadays, for the modern NHL being what it is, most players would probably pick Ryan Miller, actually, although he has a long way to go yet to catch up to these 3 legends mentioned here. ( note that I will give all 3 men credit; Hasek and Brodeur are/were fantastic goalies, legends even, though I, again, would insist that Roy is the best there ever was.)
I love this guy, but whats kindof irritating about goalie saves is that very few are actually oustanding because many could have been avoided by better positioning and rebound control.
Goaltending has evolved and we're lucky to have witnessed three of the best of all time in recent history. Roy, Hasek and Brodeur (in that order) are surely the best three goaltenders of the modern era.
Roy was best on the Habs he said so himself. And he and Terry Sawchuck are probably tied. Sawchuck played back in the time of stand up goalie so if both Roy and Sawchuck had the same equipment they would probablly be tied.
As a goalie you have to have a good reaction time, by watching this video and his (past) games, i and anyone can see that his reaction time is phenomenal, and there is not much anyone can say to deny that, if they do, watch the video again.
brodeur is better than hasek imo...technically speaking...but i'll be damned if hasek couldn't get hit with the puck like no one's buisiness, regarless of positioning or technique
McKayDouglas You are a certified ediot. How the hell can you think that Osgood and Hasek are better the Roy. Look Polamalu4MVP even explained you retard!!!!!!!
I will agree that patrick is better than brodeur and hasek, but to say he had average teams around him, no way. The Avs had sakic, foresberg, foote, blake, hejduk, bourque, and tanguay. All excellent players which any team would love to have. IMO he had a better team around him in the avs than brodeur did with the devils, aside from a little better of a defense maybe.
Yea but what about Roy's Habs teams? He was far and away the best player on those teams. For a goalie to win 2 cups with 2 different teams, for a total of 4, that's incredible. Plus, he won Conn Smythe trophies with 2 different teams, and is the only player ever to win 3 Conn Smythes. As good as those Avs teams were, without Roy they would've gone nowhere in the post-season, let alone winning the Cups.
@Polamalu4MVP respectively you take marty away from the devils they wouldn't have won their stanley cups either. Like i said patrick roy imo is the best goalie ever, but he had a great team in the avalanche.
@kaboom333 You forget that the year the Avs beat the Devils, the Devils were the highest scoring team in the league. In fact between 98-01 they finished 2nd, 2nd, and 1st respectively. They may not have had as many household names but they had a better system that was more productive than almost every team in the league, both offensively and defensively. Brodeur never carried them.
@Polamalu4MVP The Avs were great when they won, Montreal wasn't though. And Hasek is better than Brodeur, cups don't mean as much as skill. (All 3 are incredible though)
@Polamalu4MVP Yep as we all know these Avalanche teams were pretty average. I mean Sakic, Forsberg, Foote, Bourque, Blake and cie are career minor leaguers...and the two times the Avalanche won the Cup, they finished 2nd in the West (1995-1996) and won the President Trophy (2000-2001). Talk about average teams....
As for those MTL teams, you got a point!
Roy is an excellent choice for best goalie of all time I don't deny it, but don't twist reality to accomodate your desires....

@Polamalu4MVP Excuse me? You call the Av's team average?! Joe Sakic, Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, Hejduk, Drury, and Foote. If that is average, you must thinking that Brodeur had a fucking All-Star team with him! You are ridiculous. Not to mention Roy fucked up the Olympic Games in Nagano...
@Polamalu4MVP Respect to all the goalies, but i think Hasek should be more accounted for. He changed the game with his flopper style [ which does work] and he is in europe still popping a 92 save percantage at 46 years old. By the way were is Ken Dryden on your list? He won 6 stanley cups in 7 seasons and like 5 Vezinas and I dont even know how many Conn Smythes.
Brodeur: 3 Stanley Cups, 2 Olympic Gold Medals, 4 Vezina Trophies, 5 Jennings Trophies, 10-time All-Star, 1 Calder Memorial Trophy, scored 2 goals, Most Shutouts, Most Wins, Most consecutive 30 and 35 win seasons, most 40 win seasons, most goals, youngest to reach 300, 400, and 500 wins.
@Polamalu4MVP Roy is the best goaltender of all time, but you can't say the avalanche were an average team with their starting 5 being sakic, forsberg, hejduk, blake, and bourque.
@nt1099 Bourque was there for 1 year and Blake was there for 3, Blake was there for the 2nd cup that was it, Forsberg was always injured, he never had any good big bodies accept for 2001
@Polamalu4MVP You forgot to mention Hašek's 6 Vezinas, a Lester Pearson trophy, 2 William Jennings trophies, and back-to-back Hart trophies. Also, calling guys like Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Ray Bourque, Adam Foote, Milan Hejduk, and Alex Tanguay "average" is a bit ridiculous. Also, Brodeur has had some great years, but that is mainly because of great D around him. The Devils played the trap style all the way to their cups, it wasn't because of Brodeur alone. Hasek CARRIED his teams.
@Polamalu4MVP Not to take anything away from Roy, but come on...
Besides Roy, the 86 Habs had four other HOF caliber players (Carbo, Gainey, Robinson, Chelios). The 93 Habs had 102 points and 4 players with at least 30 goals and 80 points each. The 96 Avs won their division with Sakic and Forsberg in their primes. Ray Bourque's 2001 Avs won the President's Trophy before winning the cup, with maybe the best hockey team of the last 20 years.
@Polamalu4MVP i agree with what you say except colorado was pretty fucking good with forseberg and sakic in their primes... bourque was old but good so colorado was definitely not average in my opinion... the montreal teams definitely were though
i hate how ppl say that hasek and osgood are better than roy...all you have to do is watch this video and you see roy is definately on a different level than both of them
he's the heart of the icing rink whenever he plays. everyone wants to see him play and make saves. he was like a wall standing in front of the net and he is the best!

He just would not allow people to score.
I watched the 2 Stanley Cups he stole for Montreal live. Ten play off overtime wins in a row? That is Patrick Roy.
He and Sawchuck were the gods of goaltending.
