Porsche went hideously wrong with its design of the 996.

The body was a grotesque distortion of the model's purity, and, especially in the GT2, the handling was a sickly mix of sloppiness tempered with crudely dialled-in understeer.

The 911 is a sublime statement of popular mechanical art, and Porsche must never again forsake the derivative cues of the body design that honour the original, exquisitely simple air-cooled beetle platform.

For this reason, the 997 is close to perfection.

you have no idea what you're talking about, most experts believe that every single 911 before the 996 was terrible. it took them forty years, but the engineers finally made the car work with the engine with the back in the 996, and perfected it with the 997.

In real life, I am an expert, and whereas you watch Fifth Gear and dream about driving 911s, I've done so for years. I can make the comparisons that you say experts have made and I can tell you that the 996 GT2 was a dog.

This is old Top Gear before the BBC canceled it in 2001.

(Channel 5 then hired some of the former Top Gear presenters ( Tiff and Vicki) and relaunched the show as 5th gear because the BBC was wise enough to not sell the name Top Gear.
