That is the diagnostics menu, you can use it for things like testing the disk and stuff. It's not so you can show pretty patterns on your iPod :-)

that isn't a mod or a hack.. all you did was put it into disk mode, and those "cool awesome patterns" were diagnostic tests for the lcd.

Disk mode is just a filetransfer mode that is normally accessed automaticly. It can also be accessed by restarting the ipod and holding the select and play buttons.
