All these people making shit comments seem to forget that you can actually be ticketed in almost all states for taking off from a light going too fast. 1: They create more pollution than any other car, because of all the deforestation to build nickel mines for the batteries as well as many other materials.
2: They are not as efficient as new diesel engines
3: They have little to no resale value because once the battery wears out it is extremely expensive to replace

1. I'd REALLY like to know where you got your research for this. :D
2. Apparently I stand corrected when it comes to being environmentally friendly, and thus, I do apologize.
3a. Battery replacement costs are a rarity for the Prius. In fact, no conclusive data exists on just how long the batteries DO last because hardly any have failed thus far. With the Prius starting 9 years ago, mind you, most cars aren't OWNED for 9 years, the owner got its use out of it.
4. 4-Star Driver/Passenger Front, 4-Star Rollover, 5-star front side/4-star rear-side impact ratings are considered "little to no safety"?! :) Sounds safe to me!
@NickolaiVolkov lets do some math here, 1,500 dollar savings on fuel and a 2,500 dollar battery, that leaves you at a loss of 1000 bucks buddy. compared to a hundred bucks for a conventional battery for a car that caused 1/20th the pollution to build as a hybrid?
@dabears232323 (LONG sigh) :) Alright, fine!! Uhh... with regard to gas mileage: the Prius DOES get about 10 more miles per gallon! I'll leave it at that. *laughs* Argument lost, Nick.
You brought up many good points, which is cool. Furthermore, I'm appreciative of the fact you're not one of those who argue/debate by stating, "WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, &^%*&!!!"
Though I love the car, I'm actually anxious to see how electric cars develop. My wife wants the Prius, though. :)
@NickolaiVolkov Well if you want something economic definitely go for a golf diesel. im only a teenager, and i drive a ford bronco with a 5.8 liter and my best friend and I are building a 79 camaro z28.. so as you can tell economic cars arent really my thing haha but to each his own. good argument, good luck car shopping man.
@dabears232323 Ha. :) Thanks, man. And best of luck with you and you're friend building your...gas...guzzler. :) AWESOME car, though...and good year, too! See you in Youtube-land.
@dabears232323 Just to clarify, that's 1,500 dollars per year, and the battery goes for basically the whole life of the car. You don't need to replace the battery under normal circumstances, I've only heard of one case where someone left the car parked for a really long time and the battery completely discharged, which made it necessary to buy it. The batteries even in the original Priuses are still running fine.
@ReliableSunPower but to build those batteries they had to mine the nickel in canada, (not good for the environment), ship it to europe, where it is refined, (not good for the environment), ship it to Japan, where it is refined more, and turned into foam and then put into the cars. in the long run, it causes more environmental harm than a land rover discovery. but hey, its a hybrid, so it has to be economical! think again.
@dabears232323 Did I make an environmental point somewhere? I'm not sure why you decided to respond to me with this tired drivel. Also, they didn't open a mine just for Prius batteries. It's a raw material being mined anyway. They don't have an entire ship for Prius batteries. Obviously if something has a full retail price of $2,500 but it saves $1,500 a year in gas, it is a net benefit to the environment. I see absolutely no point to your message.
@dabears232323 You are comparing localised, controlled environmental damage (a managed Nickel mine in Canada) vs global uncontrolled environmental damage (release of carbon dioxide into atmosphere from the Land Rover). What weighting do you place on either to determine which is the greater evil?
@drewtang69 I would say they are roughly even, I am no environmental specialist, not do I plan to conduct a massive experiment to compare the two. But I do, however, disagree with those people who insist they are saving the environment and criticize those who drive "gas guzzlers", because their hybrids caused just as much environmental damage in the long run due to its complicated building process. I believe in a number of years we will have a replacement for gasoline, and it wont matter anyway.
That's not half bad - there's loads of people complaining about how 10 seconds is shit (yes for a race car), most people take about 20 seconds to get up to 60 during normal driving, not flooring it at high rpm all the way. I haven't tested my stock 1.6 fiat brava to the limit, but it took 7 seconds from 40-60 in 3rd gear (3000-4500rpm)
@urbex2007 I just leased a new 2010 and I am going to put another video up of it going 0-60 in power mode. It is quite an improvement and I notice much faster acceleration even uphill. Thanks for checking it out.
@ReliableSunPower Does power mode make the average rpm higher during the acceleration cycle? I.e economy mode accelerate at 4500rpm max and power mode at 6000rpm max, but wasting more fuel on engine friction.
@TimpBizkit Exactly. The RPMs go much higher and it feels looser. It's almost like taking a manual and accelerating in a lower gear for max RPMs. There is a tradeoff in mileage.
I hate SUVs all my life but I swear that I hate Priuso-mania and ppl around it so much that I will buy Range Rover Sport only because they hate it.
You guys made me look that Im one of you (with green crap coming out of my behind) only because I drive Lexus (made before Toyota made these cars u talkin bout)... so THANK YOU VERY MUCH IT WASNT NECESSARY ... at least lad Im not livin in America
People who buy Hybrids are greatly helping the oil cartel. Instead of gasoline prices going to the stratosphere and society getting away from it into other fuel sources such as hydrogen, magnetic, etc. technologies, the oil cartel can now produce the same amount of crude oil and charge more for it, thus, prolonging their stranglehold on humanity. I say, screw the gasoline/electric hybrids and push for the implementation of technologies they've been hiding from us all these decades.
What are you farting on about? I used to live in Eastern Europe and remember my father telling me that he read in an article that the Russians have perfected a technology that drills for oil 8 miles deep and hits oil every time and everywhere they stick the drill bit into. Oil is abiotic and regenerates in the pockets that have been sucked dry. Oil is not running out and never will. Let oil run up to $500/barrel and society will start using other technologies.
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make because I didn't assert anything that you're talking about. I just dispute your premise that hybrids will lead to higher gas prices because of a drop in demand.
You misunderstood me. What I'm trying to tell you is this: In the past 5 years, the oil cartel had been producing the same amount of oil as it is producing now, but it is charging more for it because of something they call "peak oil." I say let the oil prices run up to $500/barrel and society will dump using oil as fuel and go to using other energy technologies. And people like you are helping the cartel keep their stranglehold on society. Look up Stan Meyer and you'll see what I mean.
You are factually wrong, oil is cheaper now than it was a year ago mainly from the global recession. It was high oil prices that made hybrids economical. Saying that buying a hybrid helps cartels defies basic economic theory. Reducing oil demand with hybrids can basically eliminate the need for foreign oil in the USA. China's growing industrialization is what shot oil prices up. The plug in concept is clearly the way cars are going.
Fact 1: In the oil crash of 2008, China was still building strong and the oil prices went down to like $37/barrel, so your China industrialization argument is pointless. Fact 2: Oil is abiotic and spent oil wells replenish themselves in a period of a couple decades and if this info was being said in the media, oil prices would have gone down to the floor. Fact 3: Russia is now the #1 oil producer in the world because of their deep drilling technology.
Oil didn't crash. It was a speculative bubble that had high prices, which fell back to a norm when the global recession curbed demand. China was largely credited with the run up in prices due to their expansion. Again, apart from unusual theory I'm not sure what you are trying to say since I've never claimed an oil shortage. Most of your other points I'm on the same page as you. Oil is a dirty fuel, so why do you care about cars which lower the demand for it? I'm all for fuel cells.
You just can't put your head around the fact that there is NO PEAK OIL and never will be. The only reason oil prices are going up is because the boys in the oil business want more dollars for it. As their buddies in the government are devaluing the currency the oil boys don't want $30/barrel for their oil, they want $80 or more. When I watch the TV news, it makes me feel like a sucker. Be nice, take your aluminum/mercury/squaline filled vaccines and don't ever question what you're being tolled.
Also, keep this in mind: the Wall Street of today DOES NOT represent Main Street. Wall Street is full of manipulation and if you're going to point to economic theory you better look at the whole picture instead of looking at what the small part they want you to see. Remember, the parasites at the top consider you as goyem or cattle.
If our "masters" wanted to really help their fellow man, they would implement resonant electrolysis hydrogen generator systems onto ALL CURRENT combustion engines and STOP the use of oil. You see, there are technologies where you input a small amount of electrical power (12 volts, in a specific frequency) and get out a lot of hydrogen gas, enough to power a large combustion engine.
new Ford Fusion went 1000 miles on a single tank of gas averaging 81.5 mpg @ 62mph on cruise control and still gets to 60 in 8.5 seconds compared to this things 11. you hear that? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmgaaaaaymmm...
You make a good point, BUT the new Prius is 0-60 in about 9 seconds as well. Also, I'm glad to see Ford FINALLY listening to consumers and making something they want. Toyota listened 10 years ago. You can see on my video response that I got 50 MPG setting the cruise at 70. Ford's site has very different numbers than what you are quoting, and ignores Prius in comparisons, but again, I'm very happy to have an American made alternative.
Ford has been listening to consumers since they came out, the only problem was it wasn't listening to the economy, and continued building Muscle Cars with terrible fuel economy, the fusion, and the new taurus are just a show of what's to come now that Ford has started producing what the economy demands.
I like a corvette c5, I drove one on a road trip and got 32 mpg. Granted, this was all level freeway @65-70. LS1 + 6 speed = Low rpm @ freeway speed. I admire the prius technology, but I think the car is aesthetically challenged. The biggest problem I find is with people i know who have bought them. They keep flooring the thing everywhere and drive @ 90 on the freeway. They don't realize they are defeating the whole point! And they ask me if their car is broken!
I know what you're talking about. I know someone with a Camry Hybrid who whines about the mileage. How you drive is a big influence. Use cruise, inflate tires, don't race up to red lights and then slam on the brakes, all common sense stuff.
Amen. You really got 32 MPG on the highway? Great job, but at that speed, that's just about when gas engines are at peak efficiency. I guess you can say the Prius is aesthetically challenged, but with that base shape, there really isn't much to work with.
A slow hybrid, hey kid below me, listen up - the 2010 Prius can clock 10.4 sec century timing. So shut the fuck up saying it is slow and weak.
And yea, it can achieve 20 - 30km/l fuel efficiency. For you, who obviously don't own a Prius, don't even touch its steering wheel before, will say it is a bullshit. But your ignorance is as pathetic as a dogshit.
You can actually get 50 MPG just by using the cruise control. Check out my video response to see an actual demonstration. That was done over 100 miles so it wasn't just a short leg of a trip.
Technically you are correct, but what i meant by that was that GM is not owned by GM anymore and Hummer is gone. No more Hummers for you LOL go cry about it bitch
GM May car sales decreased 37.7%.....Honda's May car sales decrease of 47.6%...... the Japanese car makers are taking a bigger hit.. and GM's suv sales are not so bad for the month of May.... Buick Enclave UP 40%......Cadillac Escalade UP 21%.....GMC Yukon UP 42%
no theres still commercial hummers, which are even bigger and more badass than the H2 and H3. and even without hummers theres still plenty of trucks thatd run over your bitch car
yeah people who buy hybrids THINK they are doing good for the environment and THINK they are going to save money on gas. but they are WRONG. you pay way more than itd cost to get a 4 cyl and get close to the same mileage. You have to keep a hybrid forever to start making money off saving gas. and funny thing is the gas motor in a hybrid puts out more emissions than a regular gasoline motor...
Where the fuck are you getting these "facts" from? Your ass? Electric motors put out about a 5th of what gas motors put out. So the hybrids probably put out a tad more than a pure electric motor, but they still put out a lot less emission than a gas motor. And yes they save a lot more on gas than you do on your fucking piece of shit hummer.
no dude im talking about the GAS motor not the electric motor. When the prius is running on the gas motor it makes more emissions than most cars. and no they dont save any money on gas. You pay roughly $33000 on a new prius when you can buy a new 4cyl focus, jetta, corolla, aveo etc. for $20-22000 grand. Then at 100,000 miles you have to replace the roughly $5000 dollar batteries. You have to keep a hybrid forever to actually save money. and BTW i drive 2 fords, not a hummer.
You could be correct, the gas motor probably does put out more harmful emissions, but the thing is it puts out so few of them, it would take lots of prius's to cause environmental problems. And I have no problem if someone chooses a 4cyl over a hybrid, they just dont get as good gas millage. What type of Ford's do you drive
The way you were talking made it sound like you were some asshole who owned a Hummer, not someone who owned a mid-size SUV and a car. Why are you so supportive of hummers.
Same here. I think american cars are way underrated, but I also believe that Bug SUVs should not be street legal. Explorers and the ones about that size are fine, I just dont like the Mammoths
100,000 miles for a battery??? WTF are you talking about? The damn warrenty is 100,000 miles, 150,000 miles in some states! And $5000 for the battery? NO! They are now $1500 installed!
Exactly right, and the thing is, that they use Prius'es as taxi cabs in large citys, and the Prius has been know to travel up to 400,000 miles on the original HV (Hybrid Vehicle) battery. Don't beleive me? Google search Toyota Prius up to 400,000 miles.
TO BAD PRIUSES CAUSE MORE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE THROUGH THEIR CONTRUCTION THAN A TOYOTA LAND ROVER DISCOVERY!!!...thats a joke... the prius is a rat race.. its good for fuel economy, but it in no way is better for the environment.
Yes, the HV battery contains nikel, with is harmful to the enviroment, but in a way it makes up for it. Where the car can run soley off electricity, makes up for most of the pollution.
you know they throw those batterys one a JET PLANE inbetween the three countrys along hte production line? each flight burning more fuel in its durration that you or i will in our entire life? i call bull shit... its a rat race that makes people feel better about them selfs and thats it.
the evidence is there, and multiple studys have all said the same thing, the prius is a fuel efficent car, but it is in no way better for the environment. its a feel good car, and a rat race... but its not the future of public transportation.
It is the stepping stone to that future. The future will be like an Aptera, mainly all battery with maybe a small generator for on road recharging. Keep in mind hybrids were called a fad a few years ago by American companies, now they are scrambling to catch up. Within 10 years 20% of all cars on the road will be hybrids.
No, the real point of a hybrid is to cut down on tailpipe emissions. Just so happens that you save fuel at the same time.
But, for example. In a regular civic you cannot get leather, you can't get navi, you don't get turn signals in your sideview mirrors, however you do get some of these items in the hybrid civic as standard, and others as a option.
who gives a shit about fuckin mirror turn signals? half of the point of a hybrid is to save fuel, and cut costs all in all. If i want a fuel efficient, cheap vehicle, ill buy a used civic, focus, whatever. thats just my two cents on over rated hybrids.
oh i dont know enough about them? well at least i have my head far enough out of my ass to realize that 1 out of 10 cars are hybrids give or take, so theyre not doing any better for the environment than if they didnt exist at all. in the end, why buy a hybrid?
look i admit that i dont all too much about how a hybrid works but the day you can tell me that a prius can move out faster than my firebird ill shut up. oh and plz dont give me your gas mileage bullshit
Yea i understand where your coming from, and i really am not trying to argue, i just think the current hybrids are so complecated that they remind me of a "contraption" not a car, however the Aptera your talking about is a incredible idea to me, i love that particular technology, it operates simular to a modern day freight train, and its an idea that i think can on its own change things, and you still get you internal combustion engine, who cares if its not directly connected to the wheels?
Well, the comment on the 80-100 was from what someone else said, and anyways you can suggest that the prius is just as reliable thats fine, but the more complecated something is the more trouble, and all in all i dont really like hybrid technology, i prefer all gas, or all electric, i know the possibilities of hybrid technology, but its not enough more efficient than a combustion car, and not at all more effcient than all electric when it comes about, its like this gimmick inbetween
I've said before that I believe it is a stepping stone, so if you prefer gimmick I'm not going to debate words. I agree in general but I don't like the idea of being stranded somewhere with a dead battery needing a long recharge on all electric. My next car will be an Aptera hybrid. The gasoline motor doesn't drive the car at all, it is just a generator to charge the battery stack. That car gets 300MPG on the first gallon of gasoline and is all electric until the batter needs a charge.
A prius is not as reliable as a standard car, i know the ins and outs of a hybrid so i dont need it to be explained to me, RIPPER3200, and for an example are you going to try to tell me a prius is as reliable as a corrolla? not all the kinks are worked out of the prius, and by the way it does accelerate different from 80-100, its acceleration does drop off, its just a small 4 cylinder engine, with a larger electric engine and a small starter motor all at once when the car is WOT
Since I've had a Corolla, my mom still has a Corolla, and the Prius has 40,000 miles on it without a single issue I would say yes it is just as reliable as a corolla. The technology is 10 years old now and yes they pretty much have the kinks worked out, it works seemlessly, and it going to be the main drivetrain platform in many new cars. Not sure of the point you're trying to make with the 80-100 figure, all cars have a power curve which drops off at the top.
I think it is because less power comes from the gasoline engine in proportion to the speed., the battery does a lot of the work. Also, the stop and go helps keep the battery charged with regenerative braking. At slow speeds, the gasoline engine doesn't even run. One great thing not pertaining to mileage is the fact that the engine turns off when the car is stopped so you save a lot of gas at red lights.
it gets better city mpg than highway because when its cruising at highway speeds, ONLY the gas powered engine is working, but in city driving, its mostly the electric engine working, except when you accelerate hard or go too fast for the electric motor
Leasing, thats a good idea when it comes to hybrids i feel, untill we know how long they are gonna last, or become or know a mechanic that knows hybrids, and especially with each new model having improvement good enough to want the new one over your old model, unlike with conventional cars where its usually prestige
The Prius has been out since 1997. They last longer then most cars for 2 reasons.
1) They are made by Toyota
2) They are not driven so recklessly like most cars
Don't get caught up in the Hybrid name. People make to big of a deal about the name Hybrid. The Prius is a regular 4-cylinder engine car with a battery in it to power an electric engine. That's all there is to it. The acceleration in a Prius never slows down. Its the same from 80-108mph as it is from 20-48mph.
10 seconds isnt fast to 60 but it really is fast enough, alot of cars go to 60 in no less than 10 seconds, 8-10 seconds is a very average 0-60 time, and its useable, 1997 ford taurus will do 0-60 in 10, or a 1997 V6 mustang can do it in around 9, anything fast than 8 and it does start to feel deliberately fast
The new Prius coming out this year will do it in 9 seconds, so they are improving it to appeal to more people who feel that way. 10 seconds sounds slow but when you drive one it really doesn't seem slow. Once you get past the initial delay as the gas and electric engage, the torque is actually pretty good but we will be leasing the new model next Februray.
Funny you say that. I just put new tires on and immediately noticed a decrease in efficiency. Probably something to do with the new tread. I've heard of an expensive repair to some older Prius cars involving the front steering and suspension, I'm sure that will be taken care of in the coming models. It is amazing how much scrutiny this car gets and how well it holds up to the naysayers.
gates607,fine,i'll do the explanation for you for the sake of hoping that you won't be losing your face and your ignorant pride on your next comment as you already did with this one.the prius combines a 1.5L engine which produces 57Kw and 115Nm with an electric motor which gets 50Kw and 400NM OF TORQUE, RIGHT FROM 0 RPM. combined, it's 82Kw and 481NM OF TORQUE.i hope you do realise that your'e the one whos the idiot.the lamborghini gallardo has 510nm. thats not a lot more.
along with the new honda insight, theres a new toyota prius expected to come out in april 2009 as a 2010 model. apart from being even more fuel efficient, total power is expected to increase to about 160hp, while retaining the same V8 like torque or even gaining more.
That's ok for a car that efficient. 11 seconds 0-60 and yet you get 45mpg.
My 3.4L Chevy Impala does 0-60 2 or 3 seconds faster, but its fuel economy is barely comparable. Interestingly enough, its one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class (full size sedan).
Thanks, that's the point I'm making. I have a Boxster that is also about 3.5 seconds faster.
BTW, check out my other video where I demonstrated 51 MPG on a 100 mile trip. By driving in the high 60s with cruise on I can actually get the Prius to almost 60 MPG. I'm more excited about plug in hybrids coming out soon. They will be the future standard.
when i saw how long the video was i just clicked "back"...

1. They save the owner about $1,500/year on fuel alone.
2. They are quite a bit more environmentally friendly than non-hybrid cars.
3. Toyota is highly reputable for engine longevity.
4. Ultimately, cars get you from A to B. It's irrelevant how fast you get there...that's on the driver and not the car for being responsible.

ReliableSunPower 1 year ago
@dabears232323 You are comparing localised, controlled environmental damage (a managed Nickel mine in Canada) vs global uncontrolled environmental damage (release of carbon dioxide into atmosphere from the Land Rover). What weighting do you place on either to determine which is the greater evil?
drewtang69 11 months ago

ReliableSunPower 1 year ago
@ReliableSunPower Does power mode make the average rpm higher during the acceleration cycle? I.e economy mode accelerate at 4500rpm max and power mode at 6000rpm max, but wasting more fuel on engine friction.
TimpBizkit 1 year ago
@TimpBizkit Exactly. The RPMs go much higher and it feels looser. It's almost like taking a manual and accelerating in a lower gear for max RPMs. There is a tradeoff in mileage.

I say, screw the gasoline/electric hybrids and push for the implementation of technologies they've been hiding from us all these decades.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
You obviously don't understand economics or perfectly competitive commodities.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
What are you farting on about? I used to live in Eastern Europe and remember my father telling me that he read in an article that the Russians have perfected a technology that drills for oil 8 miles deep and hits oil every time and everywhere they stick the drill bit into. Oil is abiotic and regenerates in the pockets that have been sucked dry. Oil is not running out and never will. Let oil run up to $500/barrel and society will start using other technologies.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make because I didn't assert anything that you're talking about. I just dispute your premise that hybrids will lead to higher gas prices because of a drop in demand.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
You misunderstood me. What I'm trying to tell you is this: In the past 5 years, the oil cartel had been producing the same amount of oil as it is producing now, but it is charging more for it because of something they call "peak oil." I say let the oil prices run up to $500/barrel and society will dump using oil as fuel and go to using other energy technologies. And people like you are helping the cartel keep their stranglehold on society. Look up Stan Meyer and you'll see what I mean.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
You are factually wrong, oil is cheaper now than it was a year ago mainly from the global recession. It was high oil prices that made hybrids economical. Saying that buying a hybrid helps cartels defies basic economic theory. Reducing oil demand with hybrids can basically eliminate the need for foreign oil in the USA. China's growing industrialization is what shot oil prices up. The plug in concept is clearly the way cars are going.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
Fact 1: In the oil crash of 2008, China was still building strong and the oil prices went down to like $37/barrel, so your China industrialization argument is pointless. Fact 2: Oil is abiotic and spent oil wells replenish themselves in a period of a couple decades and if this info was being said in the media, oil prices would have gone down to the floor. Fact 3: Russia is now the #1 oil producer in the world because of their deep drilling technology.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
Oil didn't crash. It was a speculative bubble that had high prices, which fell back to a norm when the global recession curbed demand. China was largely credited with the run up in prices due to their expansion. Again, apart from unusual theory I'm not sure what you are trying to say since I've never claimed an oil shortage. Most of your other points I'm on the same page as you. Oil is a dirty fuel, so why do you care about cars which lower the demand for it? I'm all for fuel cells.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
You just can't put your head around the fact that there is NO PEAK OIL and never will be. The only reason oil prices are going up is because the boys in the oil business want more dollars for it. As their buddies in the government are devaluing the currency the oil boys don't want $30/barrel for their oil, they want $80 or more. When I watch the TV news, it makes me feel like a sucker. Be nice, take your aluminum/mercury/squaline filled vaccines and don't ever question what you're being tolled.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
Also, keep this in mind: the Wall Street of today DOES NOT represent Main Street. Wall Street is full of manipulation and if you're going to point to economic theory you better look at the whole picture instead of looking at what the small part they want you to see. Remember, the parasites at the top consider you as goyem or cattle.
valereydyachuk 2 years ago
If our "masters" wanted to really help their fellow man, they would implement resonant electrolysis hydrogen generator systems onto ALL CURRENT combustion engines and STOP the use of oil. You see, there are technologies where you input a small amount of electrical power (12 volts, in a specific frequency) and get out a lot of hydrogen gas, enough to power a large combustion engine.

a prius just drove by. gotta love jeff dunham.
admiraljimmy 2 years ago
You make a good point, BUT the new Prius is 0-60 in about 9 seconds as well. Also, I'm glad to see Ford FINALLY listening to consumers and making something they want. Toyota listened 10 years ago. You can see on my video response that I got 50 MPG setting the cruise at 70. Ford's site has very different numbers than what you are quoting, and ignores Prius in comparisons, but again, I'm very happy to have an American made alternative.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
Ford has been listening to consumers since they came out, the only problem was it wasn't listening to the economy, and continued building Muscle Cars with terrible fuel economy, the fusion, and the new taurus are just a show of what's to come now that Ford has started producing what the economy demands.
admiraljimmy 2 years ago
I like a corvette c5, I drove one on a road trip and got 32 mpg. Granted, this was all level freeway @65-70. LS1 + 6 speed = Low rpm @ freeway speed. I admire the prius technology, but I think the car is aesthetically challenged. The biggest problem I find is with people i know who have bought them. They keep flooring the thing everywhere and drive @ 90 on the freeway. They don't realize they are defeating the whole point! And they ask me if their car is broken!
logume1881 2 years ago
I know what you're talking about. I know someone with a Camry Hybrid who whines about the mileage. How you drive is a big influence. Use cruise, inflate tires, don't race up to red lights and then slam on the brakes, all common sense stuff.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
Amen. You really got 32 MPG on the highway? Great job, but at that speed, that's just about when gas engines are at peak efficiency. I guess you can say the Prius is aesthetically challenged, but with that base shape, there really isn't much to work with.

cyberfreakct38 2 years ago
yeah people who buy hybrids THINK they are doing good for the environment and THINK they are going to save money on gas. but they are WRONG. you pay way more than itd cost to get a 4 cyl and get close to the same mileage. You have to keep a hybrid forever to start making money off saving gas. and funny thing is the gas motor in a hybrid puts out more emissions than a regular gasoline motor...
adammdamann 2 years ago
Where the fuck are you getting these "facts" from? Your ass? Electric motors put out about a 5th of what gas motors put out. So the hybrids probably put out a tad more than a pure electric motor, but they still put out a lot less emission than a gas motor. And yes they save a lot more on gas than you do on your fucking piece of shit hummer.
cyberfreakct38 2 years ago
no dude im talking about the GAS motor not the electric motor. You have to keep a hybrid forever to actually save money. and BTW i drive 2 fords, not a hummer.
adammdamann 2 years ago
You could be correct, the gas motor probably does put out more harmful emissions, but the thing is it puts out so few of them, it would take lots of prius's to cause environmental problems. And I have no problem if someone chooses a 4cyl over a hybrid, they just dont get as good gas millage. What type of Ford's do you drive

Incase you didn't know, gas is called a ENGINE not a motor!
The prius isn't making any more emissions then any other new 4 cyl engine, where did you come up with that?
You pay more for any hybrid, but at the same time, they are ALWAY loaded with more options then the non-hybrid sister car.
fast55chev 2 years ago
100,000 miles for a battery??? WTF are you talking about? The damn warrenty is 100,000 miles, 150,000 miles in some states! And $5000 for the battery? NO! They are now $1500 installed!

TO BAD PRIUSES CAUSE MORE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE THROUGH THEIR CONTRUCTION THAN A TOYOTA LAND ROVER DISCOVERY!!!...thats a joke... the prius is a rat race.. its good for fuel economy, but it in no way is better for the environment.
exile907 2 years ago
Yes, the HV battery contains nikel, with is harmful to the enviroment, but in a way it makes up for it. Where the car can run soley off electricity, makes up for most of the pollution.
AUSTiNKiNSER 2 years ago
you know they throw those batterys one a JET PLANE inbetween the three countrys along hte production line? each flight burning more fuel in its durration that you or i will in our entire life? i call bull shit... its a rat race that makes people feel better about them selfs and thats it.
exile907 2 years ago
Yes, but they don't devote an entire flight or ship for each battery.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
the evidence is there, and multiple studys have all said the same thing, the prius is a fuel efficent car, but it is in no way better for the environment. its a feel good car, and a rat race... but its not the future of public transportation.
exile907 2 years ago
It is the stepping stone to that future. The future will be like an Aptera, mainly all battery with maybe a small generator for on road recharging. Keep in mind hybrids were called a fad a few years ago by American companies, now they are scrambling to catch up. Within 10 years 20% of all cars on the road will be hybrids.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
you say the hybrids always loaded with options standard, isnt the point of a hybrid to save money?
adammdamann 2 years ago
No, the real point of a hybrid is to cut down on tailpipe emissions. Just so happens that you save fuel at the same time.
But, for example. In a regular civic you cannot get leather, you can't get navi, you don't get turn signals in your sideview mirrors, however you do get some of these items in the hybrid civic as standard, and others as a option.
fast55chev 2 years ago 2
who gives a shit about fuckin mirror turn signals? half of the point of a hybrid is to save fuel, and cut costs all in all. If i want a fuel efficient, cheap vehicle, ill buy a used civic, focus, whatever. thats just my two cents on over rated hybrids.
adammdamann 2 years ago
The point is that all the extras that you get on a hybrid cost more money. You can't get a base model Honda Civic in a hybrid.
Therefore mirror signals cost extra because the hybrid has them.
You can go buy your used car..but in the long run they cost more in maintenance then a civic or pirus hybrid.
Hybrids aren't over rated, you just don't know enough about them to comment on them.
fast55chev 2 years ago 2
oh i dont know enough about them? well at least i have my head far enough out of my ass to realize that 1 out of 10 cars are hybrids give or take, so theyre not doing any better for the environment than if they didnt exist at all. in the end, why buy a hybrid?
adammdamann 2 years ago
lol, you are funny.
For starters, 1 out of 10 cars, you just made that up. Main reason people aren't buying hybrids vs non hybrids? A few reasons.
1) People are trying to keep american right now, and the only thing out there worth buying is a fusion hybrid.
2) Gas is cheap, so people aren't all that worried about their fuel costs.
Main reason though, is all the hybrid myths, like the battery costing $5000, and needing to be replaced every few years, etc.
Why buy a hybrid? How bout why not?

99gsx4g63 2 years ago
Alright, sorry to jump in on your comment battle, but I had to point out that
1. A new 2010 Prius cost's $21,600
2. Honda has the 2010 Insight that cost's $19,500
3.The Corolla cost's $15,100
4. The Focus is $14,574
All base price's so the Prius and Insight are hybrids that get about 50mpg in reach of everyone's pocket book.

Zeroto90 2 years ago
Well, the comment on the 80-100 was from what someone else said, and anyways you can suggest that the prius is just as reliable thats fine, but the more complecated something is the more trouble, and all in all i dont really like hybrid technology, i prefer all gas, or all electric, i know the possibilities of hybrid technology, but its not enough more efficient than a combustion car, and not at all more effcient than all electric when it comes about, its like this gimmick inbetween
Zeroto90 2 years ago
I've said before that I believe it is a stepping stone, so if you prefer gimmick I'm not going to debate words. I agree in general but I don't like the idea of being stranded somewhere with a dead battery needing a long recharge on all electric. My next car will be an Aptera hybrid. The gasoline motor doesn't drive the car at all, it is just a generator to charge the battery stack. That car gets 300MPG on the first gallon of gasoline and is all electric until the batter needs a charge.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
A prius is not as reliable as a standard car, i know the ins and outs of a hybrid so i dont need it to be explained to me, RIPPER3200, and for an example are you going to try to tell me a prius is as reliable as a corrolla? not all the kinks are worked out of the prius, and by the way it does accelerate different from 80-100, its acceleration does drop off, its just a small 4 cylinder engine, with a larger electric engine and a small starter motor all at once when the car is WOT
Zeroto90 2 years ago
Since I've had a Corolla, my mom still has a Corolla, and the Prius has 40,000 miles on it without a single issue I would say yes it is just as reliable as a corolla. The technology is 10 years old now and yes they pretty much have the kinks worked out, it works seemlessly, and it going to be the main drivetrain platform in many new cars. Not sure of the point you're trying to make with the 80-100 figure, all cars have a power curve which drops off at the top.
ReliableSunPower 2 years ago
so why do prius' get better in the city then the highway?
devic09 3 years ago
I think it is because less power comes from the gasoline engine in proportion to the speed., the battery does a lot of the work. Also, the stop and go helps keep the battery charged with regenerative braking. At slow speeds, the gasoline engine doesn't even run. One great thing not pertaining to mileage is the fact that the engine turns off when the car is stopped so you save a lot of gas at red lights.
ReliableSunPower 3 years ago
damn i didn't know that. its a lot more sophisticated than i thought. lol either way the things a haus when it comes to efficiency
devic09 3 years ago
it gets better city mpg than highway because when its cruising at highway speeds, ONLY the gas powered engine is working, but in city driving, its mostly the electric engine working, except when you accelerate hard or go too fast for the electric motor
yourmom922 3 years ago
Cause in the city you use more of the electric motor than the gas motor.
BananaBoxMonkey 2 years ago
Leasing, thats a good idea when it comes to hybrids i feel, untill we know how long they are gonna last, or become or know a mechanic that knows hybrids, and especially with each new model having improvement good enough to want the new one over your old model, unlike with conventional cars where its usually prestige
Zeroto90 3 years ago
The Prius has been out since 1997. They last longer then most cars for 2 reasons.
1) They are made by Toyota
2) They are not driven so recklessly like most cars
Don't get caught up in the Hybrid name. People make to big of a deal about the name Hybrid. The Prius is a regular 4-cylinder engine car with a battery in it to power an electric engine. That's all there is to it. The acceleration in a Prius never slows down. Its the same from 80-108mph as it is from 20-48mph.
ripper3200 2 years ago 3
10 seconds isnt fast to 60 but it really is fast enough, alot of cars go to 60 in no less than 10 seconds, 8-10 seconds is a very average 0-60 time, and its useable, 1997 ford taurus will do 0-60 in 10, or a 1997 V6 mustang can do it in around 9, anything fast than 8 and it does start to feel deliberately fast
Zeroto90 3 years ago
The new Prius coming out this year will do it in 9 seconds, so they are improving it to appeal to more people who feel that way. 10 seconds sounds slow but when you drive one it really doesn't seem slow. Once you get past the initial delay as the gas and electric engage, the torque is actually pretty good but we will be leasing the new model next Februray.
ReliableSunPower 3 years ago
10 seconds is slow.... they need to make it faster... that slow isnt good for short freeway merging...
asianfob18 3 years ago
the crappy fwd, suspension and tyres of this current prius wastes all the torque tho lol. the 2010 prius should fix some of that tho
serious22222 3 years ago

V8 like torque? From a Prius?! LMFAO

The electric motor in the Prius generates 295 lb ft of torque.
Its the 110 HP and 82 TQ in the gas engine that takes over afterwards that makes it slow :-D
