You'd get better distance if the mento's stream was directed against a turbine that drove the wheels instead of just against a wall, if you can produce a constant pressure stream you could get some good distance, use the rocket blast against the wall to get moving, then use the turbine stream to keep the momentum up, just something to think about ... ;-)

Yes! My son tried to make a small scale model car that used Coke+Mentos for propulsion as a science fair project last year. Didn't think about the backstop! (Sadly, his failed to move more than an inch or two; tried a single two-liter bottle and two one-liter bottles; both 'plain' (ingenious "drop mentos then let bottle flop backwards to be the rocket" mechanism,) as well as through a narrower nozzle. The backstop really would have helped.

it gets its "forward force" by the rods inside of the tubes pushing against the wall. it's technically not a rocket lol
