@scismgenie you know he was talking about the beauty of the blackbird, not its technological advances, nothing like this is built today, this was a machine where you pulled a leaver and you actually saw something move, because of that it has a soul, nothing with a microchip can have a soul
First of all, they used the titanium because no other blend of metal could survive the combination of pressure, heat and acceleration that these birds have without turning brittle rather quickly. My dad was an executive for Lockheed that worked on the project, and he once told me that the numbers the US and Lockheed admit to for this plane's performance don't come close to the truth-and they'll never admit the truth...
@scismgenie why don't they just internally redesign for exec jet purposes, it will make a shit load of cash. If greenpeace comes and tries to fuck the new project over, they can tell them to f off and give the larger population an opportunitity to which was once reserved to only the elite of the USAF!!!
@harris3693 You might as well start from scratch, and what market is there for a plane that travels that fast? Its cost per mile would be incredibly high compared to a standard commercial jet, or even an exec. jet.
@scismgenie well, u can switch the engines with more modern fuel efficient NPO-Saturn engines with afterburners, which will save on fuel while producing slightly less thrust than the original engines, along with changing the alloy from titanium to galvanized steel composite, which will extend its range and cost of airframe production. build it in a factory in China to further reduce the cost of production. For market, it would be best suited for business applications as biz men need to get......
@scismgenie yes, but due to cost of production and metal composites which have the same tensile strength (Like on the MIG25, used Steel composite to achieve the same level of strength) Titanium wouldn't be the first choice for most aircraft designs!!
@scismgenie also, the US doesn't have enough titanium for the original batch of SR-71's let alone a new flet of exec jet versions!!! They had to buy from Russia, which would now be harder as Russia is wary of the US.
@harris3693 would "galvanized Steel Composite" perform as well as titanium? What would the heat stress parameters be, and would it weaken after repeated heating?
@scismgenie (cont')....need to get to their destinations in a hurry!!! thus providing airlines billions in surplus revenue from a short amount of flights, furthermore, it will reduce the cost of an airline ticket for the common folk, hence, it is a WIN, WIN situation and thus providing the larger population with the opportunity to fly supersonic!!! Anyways, there is already a supersonic business jet, the Cessna Citation X, this will just be another leap in aviation trend!!!
@scismgenie A very good friend of mine used to pilot a SR-71 and has cancer. I have never heard of this until now. I will pass it on little good it will do for him now but sometimes a reason brings comfort and hope. Good Luck.
@scismgenie ya, I was able to sit in one just before NASA retired the ones they had gotten from the air force. But, it was hard climbing in partially because I was only like 10
If only that beauty was built with today's technology... Imagine that. Too bad satellites stole the blackbirds job. I was lucky enough to touch the left wing a flight ready blackbird at an air show, summer '91.
I find it funny that ppl gossip about unknown planes. The U.S. military has air equipment 50 years ahead of anything that is classified to the general public. Why is that so hard to believe? Look at the SR-71 Blackbird for example, this plane flew in the 1960s and yet it looks like it's more advanced than the stealth bomber.
if they had this aircraft 50-60 years ago or wateva age, to reach an absolute incredible speed and engineering from the days back then, imagine what china, russia, america and north koreans have :O. gets you thinking there aye. sometimes it can be pretty scary :)
The top speed was set way back in 1976 at just over 2100mph at an altitude of just over 81,000ft but in early pre testing days of the SR71 altitudes as high as 94,000ft were attained but 80-83,000ft was the norm with a crusing speed of around 2000mph 0r Mach 3.
Indeed, however the one in use now was provided not by myself, but by YouTube because the other one was owned by Michael Jackson., THIS one is licensed to YouTube.
You would have to assume the US military still has at least 2 of these in service. Satellites are nice, but can you see under cloud cover? Unmanned drones are nice too to get under clouds, but can they get there fast enough and can they not get shot down? I know you could just send out 100 unmanned drones and expect them to get shot down, but what if you are fighting an advanced enemy that can destroy all of them?
@DarkerDivinity... the SR-71 couldn't see under cloud cover any better than a satellite. it's operational altitude was over 80,000 feet. that's WAY above the clouds. when flying below cloud cover (under 10,000 feet) it couldn't break the sound barrier. the air is simply too thick.
the last two SR-71s were flown by NASA and retired in 1999.
personally, i think we should have kept at least ONE of these birds flying simply as a source of national pride.
0:52 OMG I WAS THERE! Dayton Ohio! Thats a YF-12! They told me not to touch it but I couln't resist touching such a beautiful aircraft! the last XB-70 is there now.....along with a YF-23
@MarkDAretard . The one at Wright Patterson is a SR-71. It was flown by Gen Jerome OMalley former commander of TAC and the 9th SRW, the RSO was Edward Payne, former commander of the 9th RTS. I proudly served under both of them.
Do you realize that the oil on your hands could have created a burnthrough when that AC was at cruising altitude/speed? That's why you're not supposed to touch it.
It was shot at 4000 times and never hit; it just put the pedal to da metal and out ran the missiles. After buring off some fuel it would then climb to about 80-85000 feet and cruise. last test speed run from around L.A to Dulles was in 64 minutes. To this date there has never been a plane that mached it..
@menahunie007 "To this date there has never been a plane that mached it.." disclosed to the public, that is. Do you really think this 1950's technology is still the most advanced? 30-40 years from now they will declassify the most sectretive aircraft being used today.
@MoreInfo24 There may be faster UNMANNED aircraft, like the hypersonic project from a couple of years ago, but there is no faster air breathing manned aircraft. The reason is that they decided that Satellites and drones could do the job with less cost and less risk to pilots. Its all about MONEY not technology. @scismgenie I gusee we will just have to waite another 20-30 years to find out for sure. The most advanced aircraft are highly classifed for a few decades.
@MoreInfo24 Look at all of the projects since 1990, all have been subsonic or nearly subsonic programs focused on Stealth. In Reconnaissance they first upgraded the U2/TR1 and then they went unmanned. There is no evidence that a follow-on high-mach manned aircraft exists, and is active.
@LostAviators They had a strong positioning of fuel tankers (KC-135L) and a plan to be at the right place at the right time. They ALWAYS got it right.

@Raven9409 Even before U-2 development was complete, Lockheed began work on its successor as part of the CIA's OXCART project, involving the A-12, a Mach-3 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft — a later variant of which became the famed USAF SR-71 Blackbird.

yes i know this but where do you get Area 51 from? it was designed abd built by the Lockheed Skunkworks the same company that gave us the F-117 sealth fighter and the B-2 Stealth Bomber
It's simple to explain what has happened. Back then, when you had an idea, you built it and tested it. The days of the real test pilots. Now, all that same building and testing is done on computers. Very rare will you ever see aircraft like this anymore due to that fact.
Awesome looking, the high speed cameras with thousands of yards of film that was gone over by hand within hours shows they may have only have had tube electronics to work with, but they were sure organized and focused. Amazing achievement all around 50 years ago.
I almost guarantee that the Air-Force or CIA still has some operational ready in case of some sort of emergency. lol No way they would just retire the fastest manned aircraft lol.
It may not be the SR71 that we now deploy. This technology was released in 1958. I doubt the worlds best aeronautical engineers have been twiddling their thumbs for 51 years saying well, i guess thats all we can do, might as well sit back and relax, lol. No one knew about this aircraft in 1958. Keep that in mind.
scismgenie...What are your thoughts on Ray Torricks drowning death, during the MD-21 mishap, do you believe possibilty had a rip in the pressure suit or did Torrrick open his visor by lifting the Bailer Bar?????
an awesome piece of american aeronautic ingenuity! i wonder if they really have a successor to this masterpiece, knowing of something called "project aurora"
usafisasome..The last SR-71A at Dryden TC /Edwards AFB was taken out of flyible storage and moved by flatbed trailer June 2003 to Kalamasoo, Mi for permanent display....THX
the sr71 flew as high as 85,000 feet thats just at the edge of space. this also means the plane can see and photograph almost everything and it really won't matter with the heat signiture. by the time someone tries to intercept it's already gone.
serbianwp, No, not at all. the SR71 in one form was in service in 1962 and retired around 1992. it was never shot down and about mach 3.5 it's retired as the world's fastest plane.
serbiawp..The SR-71 was superior in may respects, the F-117 was a sub-sonic, maintenance intensive A/C using mid-1970's technology, the fact that the USAF has retired all NightHawks, proves the F-117 to have the shortest operational life of any recent fighter, the A/C was more or less a flying and fighting experiment on the way to developing the technology of the B-2 and F-22, which are both very superior to the F-117....long live the SR-71...THX
As unlikely a feat as it was that you shot down an F-117, it would be even more unlikely you could shoot down a Blackbird. Over 3 times the speed of sound at 90000 feet. Many tried and failed to shoot down a Habu... BTW I visited your country a couple of years ago and was amazed to see the results of the NATO precision bombing campaign. Bridges still down across the Danube like a big hammer had crushed them and Milosevic's house a black stain in an otherwise nice and untouched neighborhood.
@scismgenie you know he was talking about the beauty of the blackbird, not its technological advances, nothing like this is built today, this was a machine where you pulled a leaver and you actually saw something move, because of that it has a soul, nothing with a microchip can have a soul

yes i know this but where do you get Area 51 from? it was designed abd built by the Lockheed Skunkworks the same company that gave us the F-117 sealth fighter and the B-2 Stealth Bomber
smitto21 1 year ago
@smitto21 area 51 was the lockheed skunkworks
matt9736 1 year ago
ummmmmm the only area 51 i know of is the what used to be secret base in the nevada desert....well still secret base even tho we know its there
smitto21 1 year ago
@matt9736 Nope. The Lockheed "Skunkworks" was in Burbank, CA. The so-called "Area 51" is a flight test facility in Nevada.

B-2 was by Northrop.

@MilitaryTuners P-51 is not a jet

the sr-71 is still a badass aircraft.
scottierockett 2 years ago 10
It's simple to explain what has happened. Back then, when you had an idea, you built it and tested it. The days of the real test pilots. Now, all that same building and testing is done on computers. Very rare will you ever see aircraft like this anymore due to that fact.

MichaelStn 2 years ago
I absolutely HATE this song but enjoy the video. So many people put this song to their videos but to the SR-71? WTF?
dopafeind1 2 years ago 5
Awesome looking, the high speed cameras with thousands of yards of film that was gone over by hand within hours shows they may have only have had tube electronics to work with, but they were sure organized and focused. Amazing achievement all around 50 years ago.
midnightroamer 2 years ago
I almost guarantee that the Air-Force or CIA still has some operational ready in case of some sort of emergency. lol No way they would just retire the fastest manned aircraft lol.
whiteyak5 2 years ago 2
It may not be the SR71 that we now deploy. This technology was released in 1958. I doubt the worlds best aeronautical engineers have been twiddling their thumbs for 51 years saying well, i guess thats all we can do, might as well sit back and relax, lol. No one knew about this aircraft in 1958. Keep that in mind.
MrPROUSA 2 years ago 2
@MrPROUSA it would be nice if we kept the SR71 in service and i think we could afford to have kept at least one or 2 in service if not all of em
smitto21 2 years ago
@smitto21 Yeah, but they don't have a purpose anymore.
slaneyboi 1 year ago
@whiteyak5 What on earth would they need it for, it was a recconaissance aircraft. Stelites can do their job now.

scismgenie...What are your thoughts on Ray Torricks drowning death, during the MD-21 mishap, do you believe possibilty had a rip in the pressure suit or did Torrrick open his visor by lifting the Bailer Bar?????
E8F9G0 2 years ago
@E8F9G0 He had no choice but to open the visor, otherwise he would have suffocated.

RIP. SR-71 Blackbird fleet
StamenZX 2 years ago
the sr71 flew as high as 85,000 feet thats just at the edge of space. this also means the plane can see and photograph almost everything and it really won't matter with the heat signiture. by the time someone tries to intercept it's already gone.
dmfb68 2 years ago 2
Impressive aircraft the SR-71
....But the song is so misplaced....Just because the title is the same.LoL
lofi73 2 years ago
is this the same stealth technology like in F-117a that we shot down ?
serbianwp 2 years ago
serbianwp, No, not at all. the SR71 in one form was in service in 1962 and retired around 1992. it was never shot down and about mach 3.5 it's retired as the world's fastest plane.
dmfb68 2 years ago
serbiawp..The SR-71 was superior in may respects, the F-117 was a sub-sonic, maintenance intensive A/C using mid-1970's technology, the fact that the USAF has retired all NightHawks, proves the F-117 to have the shortest operational life of any recent fighter, the A/C was more or less a flying and fighting experiment on the way to developing the technology of the B-2 and F-22, which are both very superior to the F-117....long live the SR-71...THX
E8F9G0 2 years ago
As unlikely a feat as it was that you shot down an F-117, it would be even more unlikely you could shoot down a Blackbird. Over 3 times the speed of sound at 90000 feet. Many tried and failed to shoot down a Habu... BTW I visited your country a couple of years ago and was amazed to see the results of the NATO precision bombing campaign. Bridges still down across the Danube like a big hammer had crushed them and Milosevic's house a black stain in an otherwise nice and untouched neighborhood.
