It gets quite cold in England probably not as cold as where u live. Do youtjink this would be possible. And instead of using boards could I use snow as walls?
@Rychay i think it all depends on how cold it is, and if it's a downhill or not: if it's between 20 and 10 degrees, you can zamboni or use the sprinkler for a short while (about 30 minutes) especially at night. if ti freezes up fast, you can do several coats in one day and it smoothes out pretty quick (a little rain will make it smooth out too). if it's 10 degrees or under, you can run the water for hours if necessary
@DANGLExSAUCE if the bottom gets a good seal, the rest will fill in and smooth out: sometimes we build up around the edges and corners with snow packed against the boards, then freeze the snow with the zamboni: this helps it hold a good seal and cover up uneven areas (if you don't get a seal, the water runs out down the hill, down the grass: also you can't use the water too long if it's not REAL cold (if it's in the high teens, we only go a half-hour with the hose
how big like the measurements of ur rink? and for my rink i just used a 40x60 ice rink tarp from home depot it was on sale for $88, i made the rink 25ft wide and 50 ft long
@crazykyle401 we use all 8 ft boards (cause they fit in the car) the rink is an odd shape to fit the back yard hills: 7 boards long (56 feet), 5 boards wide on one end (40 ft) 3 on the other (24 ft)... hope everybody gets some cold winter soon!
@unclejohnthezef yea cold winter started already i filled uo my rink and its freezing alrady like 2 inch thick but theres this very high part tht still needs covering soo i have to keep fillin it up but in the end it will work out plus its freezing gradually and not soooo fast.
Thanks for this.. I was having issues building my rink the past 2 days(I live in Canada so November is ice rink time). I have a bunch of tarps on the ground and was trying to pool the ice up. Now I have a good layer started by using your layering method. Thankyou!
awesome and fun video! i thought i was the only backyard rink builder that ever heard liam lynch. I battled snowfalls, thaws, and a huge field of ice marbles from the sprinkler. when the day temp hits 40, the surface glazes, then freezes without having to drag the zamboni. i have an automatic hose reel which is stored in my utility room, drug out the window, and then power-wound back into the house. our v-ball court provided tall poles for lighting late skates. lookin forward to another year.
just happened to come across this... but this was awesome!! You seem like a really great dad!! Kudo's to this... Awesome rink! Best of luck with your rink this winter
Brings back great memories. We did this from 1991-96 when I was kid! Dad helped us the first year then it became our winter project from December until mid March most years, one advantage being raised in Marquette, Michigan where its winter for 5 months of the year!
Dude that looks like such an awesome time! I showed my girlfriend and told her that when we're older and married we definitely should build a rink like this. Hockey and skating whenever we want would be so amazing! Thanks for the walk through, you're rink is great and you showed how fun it can be instead portraying it as tedious and frustrating like some would think it is. whooooo hockey!
wow, thanks!!! the kids and their friends invent new games on the ice all the time, and they all come to shovel off the snow, but i think the coolest part is hearing our 5 year old say: "I Love skating!" wahoo!! it's like no chore at all doing the zamboni: they all want a turn!
I have been meaning to do this for years.

Adorable. I watched your old video and now this one. You're a great dad.
I experienced epic failure with uneven ground and an ICE N GO rink. I will try to fix it using your Wooden Boards/Posts Idea.
The soundtrack is bizzare! lol

i think there are some advantages to "one layer at a time", and it held up great during the big rainfalls last week
