  • Council has said that taxes should not rise as a result of this $3 million shortfall in funds. Nor have they told us the truth that the Garages are contaminated with oil and will NOT be sold at a profit. It simply costs too much clean, over $300,000 for each Garage/Station multiplied by four. It will takke HUGE tax increases spread over a few years to replenish this $3million MINIMUM shortfall. Council is filled with untruthfulness.

  • My question to all the naysayers is this...what exactly would you do if you were on council? Come on build your case. Faced with buildings that do not meet current OHSA rules, what are YOUR options? By the way, I am not a politician, just a taxpayer would is centered and understands today's modern world. The current council was voted by MAJORITY, meaning that most the ratepayers voted for them ( just in case you don't understand ). Deal with it, its called democracy.

  • You were NOT voted in to spend untold millions. Like the guy in the paper said, you are accountable. Since this complex thing started in the past year we have had a world-wide DEPRESSION, GM BANKRUPT, FED GOVT spending BILLIONS to keep nation afloat, and this WILL LEAD to TAX INCREASES for all. ENOUGH TAX INCREASES ! Building a new Complex is NOT stimulus. Driving me out of my home with taxes IS KILLING US ALL. VANITY. THE COMPLEX IS ONLY VANITY.

  • Obviously, zrnifdr, you CANNOT read, I stated, I am not a council member, just a taxpayer. This is exactly what I am talking about. You people only read what you want, not ALL the facts. By the way, you didn't build much of a case. Also, show me proof of this "huge tax increase" that you speak of. I guess if they increased taxes to improve YOUR road, that would be ok? OH ya, that would also be MY taxes. All in all, at the end of the day, this building is going through, so I guess MAJORITY RULES.

  • It is you that cannot read. The world economy has changed for the worse since this process began. You ignore this fact, like Council. If you are not a councillor, you are certainly partisan. An employee ? We want to see the facts, and not the fantasies of council. Court action would get to the bottom of this. No way does this complex offer a new vision: a stable tax base offers hope. Proof of taxes;14% hike already. Join TIARA and talk to residents about assessments. They are unsustainable.

  • All municipal politicians want to build on a grand scale: skydome,KROC center; Montreal olympic stadium;etc. They alwaysrun over budget, leaving staggering long-term debt. Council is not entirely truthful, publicly as to ongoing maintenance costs of existing buildings. Nor of inability to sell old toxic garages.Try and buy it yourself without liability ! They are worthless unless cleaned of oil. That is a hidden COST. We could add on to exisitng offices, at less cost. A case will be built.

  • As I said, twice now, just a TAXPAYER. Read that again, just so you understand.

Ha Ha, .....TIARA.....that explains everything, bye bye.

  • If we continue to sit on our hands & not deal with situations like our predessors, we'll be on the hook for more then just the operating cost of this new building. Things will get worse, if not your tax $ then your childrens tax $. Face it, we're not in the 60's anymore, taxes go up, if you want to continue having a great township we have to invest in it. This is the beginning to a new vision of this area, one of which i hope to see bring more residents and businesses to increase the tax base.

  • selrahcnoira - so instead of commenting on the issues at hand you prefer to deal with the situation with personal attacks? Who's childish now?

the fact is the building is needed, if the previous Councillors and grandfathers had the brains to put money aside for the future growth/upgrades to our buildings we would not be in this position. All municipalities are facing the same issues, look at kemptvilles complex, bridge collapse in quebec, its time to invest in infrastructure and not just rds

  • breezie1231 must be a crooked politician himself....and not too bright a one at that

  • more crooks....vote in a lousy mayor and he could bankrupt you...

  • Please stop saying, "The Taxpayers" when you express your opinion. I do not want to be lumped in with a group of idiots that enjoy nothing but to cause drama. And by the way, people have stopped purchasing the local paper because we are sick and tired of reading your rants. At this point, watching grass grow would be more enjoyable then anything your annyoing little group has to say. Enough already.

  • Struck a nerve, have we?

  • Did you listen to yourself after you posted this? It sounded like I was being read a children's book. That would be appropriate - information prepared by simpletons and narrated by one. You contradicted yourself numerous times and some of the information was incorrect. It is understandable however since most of the public meetings were held while you morons were spending the winter in Florida. The thousands of smart taxpayers in the township are ok with the building being built. Get a life.

  • Last minute? We have been seeking information since this process began. We HAD sound economic times. HOWEVER In the past year a world-wide DEPRESSION has struck with violent force: GM bankrupt; U.S. Banks, Insurance and investment firms insolvent in the amount of A TRILLION DOLLARS. This affects us. Factories in Brockville and Gan closed and 750 unemployed with no hope in the short term. And Council blindly plods along as if all is still rosy. TAXES WILL RISE because of this Complex.

  • I want a community pool (in Lansdowne)... even if it is an outdoor one that can only be used in the summer!

  • Why is it now that all these questions come and must be answered? This plan wasn't just announced this week. For about the last 2 yrs it has been discussed. All of a sudden it's a problem. Here's an idea, sell your waterfront mansion, get in your SUV or BMW and move to Toronto and see how you like it. Maybe we should have bit on the original proposal at amalgamation of a $10 Million complex. That would have been much better. I guess progress is something this township is better off without.

  • FYI: Don't own an SUV or Waterfront. I'm a struggling businessperson that cannot afford the inevitable tax increase. I WISH I COULD INVEST IN MY BUSINESS, but I cant afford it. Big and small are going bankrupt. Only governernment people demand raises and new buildings, while the rest of us suffer and lose our jobs and way of life. We have been deceived. Election ads read: TRANSPARENCY, LOWER TAXES. What a joke! I hope you Councillors all run again so that we can defeat you, soundly.

  • That is very funny since a member of your annoying little group WAS a Councillor and WAS defeated.

  • You people should pull your head out of your ass long enough to understand what happens in the real world. The current buildings are not adequate for the proper use now. The money needed to renovate would be far more in the long run ( another band aid is not needed ). Health and safety concerns and inadequate space call for this new proposal. Monies are in place, let it go. Get a life. By the way, there is more to the township than just the river, there is much more north of the water.

  • This Complex might be great, but we will not know until we have the facts. Council did NOT answer the questions posed by Coalition of Area Residents' deputation at the June 8th meeting.

WHY NOT? IS THERE SOMETHING TO HIDE? COUNCIL SHOULD ANSWER THE QUESTIONS SO WE KNOW THE TRUTH.

And as to your 'River' comment: higher taxes affect farmers and cottagers. We will ALL pay for what has been described as King Kinsella's Kastle.

  • We understand that the Coalition is trying to answer questions on behalf of the residents, my question is WHY WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO GET ANSWERS? There were plenty of public meetings to discuss this idea last year and from what i heard they were poorly attended if your group really had our interest why wasn't something done then when this could have been stopped. You waited too long to act and now you have to face that its too late. The shovel is in the ground so deal with it.
