This show FASCINATED me when I watched it originally back in 1979 when I was 9 or 10 years old. I didn't know what a blooper or "long shot" was. I thought they called it "long shot" because you "shot" up to level 6. But it's the odds against winning when 2 of the 3 spaces are blocks. I was fascinated with the clock's drumbeat and the theme songs and used to enjoy playing them on the piano or an organ equipped with automatic drumbeats. I have an episode recorded on audio cassette somewhere.
I recall one episode where a contestant won the main game and was set to go to the Gauntlet of Villians after the commercial. While celebrating, he injured himself and when the commercial ended they had to bring on 2 new contestants. Anyone remember this?
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't this one of the first DAYTIME game shows to offer $25,000 as the grand prize? (As I recall, at the time it was still "The $10,000 Pyramid")
I still think it's a great game. Too bad Sugarman wants an arm and a leg to give GSN replay rights.
Now you see it in 1974 offerd a jackpot as high as $25,000. Few months later Jackpot offerd a prize as high as $50,000. So this wasnt the first to offer $25,000, but the first to offer a guarenteed win of $25,000.
Except that wasn't a GUARANTEED 28K payoff. You had to, not only play the Money Cards without making a mistake, but you also HAD to bet the max each time.
However, you are rith about this being 'underrated' -- I liked everything about this show except the name. You must admit though, TK was a trouper -- he never backed away from saying it. A lot of hosts would have probably said it at the top and then referred to it as "the game', "our show" or whatever.
Whew is a very good game. It does take a little while to understand it but once you get it you will be engaged for the whole half hour; the bloopers are meant to be funny and the contestants are always excited to be there & win a big fortune. The bonus round is very straight forward although I feel the waiting to answer it is more worthwhile here since we can't see the blooper on text. The game does work & Tom does a good job with it put presentation wise it needed some retooling. 4 Star show.
There were plans for another season, but there were two problems. First, the celebrity edition or tag team edition killed the ratings and second, programming conflicts were present on CBS.
@Rlotpir1972 I don't know if it's still up here, but there's a clip with Betty White on the Gauntlet. She flubs a couple of bloopers while she runs the first five villains, which takes away from the time the contestant has when he starts on Villain #6. That's a problem with celebrity players on shows who have nothing to lose--they mess it up for the contestants playing to earn money.
I thought Elmo STINKIN was a lame pun, almost like a dead giveaway. Same way with Randy Amasia's winning pun of "A screwdriver is made with vodka and orange SCREWS".
Okay, in that clip, Villain #1 holds up the one block seen here. I have seen Villains #2, #4, #6 and #7 hold up blocks in other clips. I hope that someone can find clips with Villains #3, #5, #8, #9 and #10 holding blocks, That would be great.
There is a clip on YouTube that Villain #3, #8, and #10 holding blocks. It was put up about a month ago. I would like to see more clips from the game show Whew on Youtube.
To patrickballoonman, recently someone put a clip that shows Villain #9 holding a block. Its on Whew Pt. 2 and it was put on YouTube on June 2, 2009. I just saw it today. I haven't seen any clip with Villain #5 holding a block. So, you may watch it if you'd like.
To patrickballonman - I've noticed that when they have a "Long Shot Block", its always Villain #4 thats holding the block. Anyways, you can see now that only Villain #5 is left thats not holding a block because there is a clip on Whew Pt 2 made on June 2, 2009 of Villain #9 holding a block. You can watch it if you'd like.
Thanks for the reply. Took me a minute but I did find that clip and it's great! And ICYW, I have seen other villains hold the Long Shot block back when I saw the show in '79-'80.
Before Randy Amasia's passing, he told me that his Gauntlet time was the 2nd fastest in the 4 or so months Whew! had been on the air. He later confirmed that this Gauntlet run was the only one faster, at least until late August '79.
I once heard about an interview with Tom Kennedy when he talked about this show. I believe he was quoted as saying "We were a hit, but when they found out we were on they canceled us". By the way, didn't this show replace "Match Game" on the CBS daytime schedule?
They have another video with this lady called "Running the Gauntlet". I would like to be able to see the whole show of Whew on YouTube. I've seen the show where they had the contestant named Randy Amnesia on the show and he won $25,000 in the Gauntlet of the Villains. Too bad that this show is not on the air anymore. Its been almost 30 years ago. I use to play this game with my brother and sisters when it aired and I use to love watching the "Gauntlet of the Villains" as well.
I made my own (very cheap) home version of this show recently (after finding the Randy Amasia show on here) and play it sometimes. No actual questions, I just roll dice to see if the (cartoon character) contestant gets the blooper right or not. It's a lot of fun just to simulate the gameplay. It's the closest thing I have to new episodes. "Whew!" was my all-time favorite game show. It's great to see the clips here on youtube.
I did a similar thing. I got tj_webrookie's "Whew!" simulation program, and I've had a lot of fun simulating the decisive Amasia/Aiello match, from placing the same blocks that the blockers placed, to simulating the charger's choices, down to the same (yes, the very same) blocks that Pat Aiello hit. One thing-- if you want your timer to run in sync with the show's timer, you have to hit the "Charge!" button just as Tom says "Charge!". Otherwise, the game clock will be out of sync with the show.
Carrie just doesn't know how to get excited.

You are correct -- I should have been more precise and said "guaranteed grand prize".

Let's not forget NBC's "50 Grand Slam" (also hosted by Tom Kennedy). It offered $50,000 (hence the name).

Not quite...Card Sharks, which premiered a year earlier, beat them to the punch w/its $28K+ top payoff...still a very underrated classic, though!

Note to Burt Sugarman: Get the bug out of your ass and license the rights to GSN, or just let GSN just buy the show period.
BTW, Carrie was an awesome charger and she had one of the best Gauntlet runs of all time. Now we need to see Howard Wilson's run.
