@inbocaru It was shot from the parking lot of 196 West main st. The Angelos Rest. parking lot is on the east side of the trestle. The place I took these videos is on the west side of the trestle. Both places are on the same side of the street.
great viedo. I love the greenport scoot. I felt bad when it got replaced by those bilevels. I just love this train with alco and MP15 power. This train is a great one. Can anybody tell me wat happen to alco or the MP15. Oh by the way 5 stars
I lived in Port Jeff around 1997-1998. I met a Russian guy who got lost coming from Manhattan. We changed at Huntington from the electric to the diesel. He said the car we were in was much worse than the Soviets ever made their people ride in. But I kinda liked the old cars, especially standing on the open platforms on a hot summer night as the train coursed through the woods around Stony Brook on into Port Jeff. Romantical . . .
GP-38s were some of the best passenger diesels LIRR had, but seriously I really hope CSX and Canadian Pacific will one day get granted track rights to run on LIRR property. It would look so cool seeing big blue and big red chugging through Ronkonkoma or East Hampton.
The GP-38's were actually built mainly for road diesel freight and during the early 70's the LIRR started purchasing them and were going to use them to handle thier frieght chores, but decided to press them into passenger service to replace thier older Alco C-420's instead in which they definately got thier moneys worth. The MP-15AC's were and still are very good also and were designed by the manufacturer as a crossbreed between a yardgoat and a full size road diesel making it a road switcher.
Thank you so much for this post! It brings back so many great memories. I loved when the LIRR repainted the diesels in the very early 90s! These clips are the best! If ou have more, please post them when you have the time! I'll be watching! Thanks again.
Most was filmed in 1998. Ifyou watch closely the date is at the beginning of the clip edit. Only one clip of the stopped NYA freight train was shot in 2001
I think those GP locos would probably still be running if the Rail Road only gave them a simple overhaul. You can almost set your watch to the rate at which the DMs are being sidelined.
I was at Greenport once. I always wanted to live on Shelter Island. Peaceful and secluded. Yes I know VERY expensive!!

Does anyone know what range of years did the LIRR use that Midnight Blure and Yellow color scheme seen on that GP-38 at the 1:44 mark?
