My granddad from liverpool was just like this guy, HE was merchant marine and all his brothers wear fishermen As wear his uncles and father and Grand father. None of them leaned to swim EVER. Why? I asked him as a kid. "You fall off the Boat you Die. Better to die quick than float for five minutes it will take to freeze or current get you and drown slow. We are never able to get em back on board." My mom yelled at her dad for telling me that.Fishermen do not learn to swim,Make it point of it"
couple facts 1) bout 90% of fishermen lol dont know how to swim and a law was almost passed requireing em to be tied to the boat 2) 75% of dead fishermen found are found with their fly down

He said if you got life vest then you do not need to swim. Without one YOU DO NOT want to know how. Thought share this bit of dark humor reasoning.
