@shadiest213 Maybe not "overrated", but I'd say that Hood lived on old merits and its former past as being the symbol of the British rule over the sea, the symbol of their naval power.
Hood were way past her days of glory, Bismarck just had the lucky honor of ending her career
Unbelievable, the entire Royal Navy by luck sank her. I am American and even I appreciate the beauty of the Bismarck. I wish she wouldn't have been sunk and we could see her today still afloat.
Well its not proven that the Royal Navy sunk it. The Torpedo hits just pierced the outer Armorbelt and only three shells pierced the armor of the Bismarck. Not enough damage to sink it. Thats what the last expedition said about the damage at the Bismarck.
@JazzJaRa actually it is proven, there was expedition recently that located and analysed the bismarks wreckage. They found nothing consistent with scuttling charge explosions but they did find several large holes that could have only have been caused by powerful external explosions against the hull. AKA a salvo of torpedoes. The german one before wasnt particularly precise given the technology they had to work with at the time
The cause of sinking was due to scuttling: sabotage of engine-room valves by her crew, as claimed by German survivors. Huge dents showed that many of the 14 inch (356 mm) shells fired by King George V bounced off the German belt armour. It cannot be confirmed by Ballard that the shell holes pictured in Bismarck's armour were full penetrations.
Ballard's expedition revealed there were no signs of the implosions that occur when air-filled compartments succumb to outside water pressure. This suggests that Bismarck's compartments were flooded when the ship sank, supporting the scuttling theory.
The American expedition's final conclusions were strikingly different from the findings of the Anglo-American team; they estimated that Bismarck could still have floated for at least a day when the British vessels ceased fire and could have been captured by the Royal Navy, a position supported by the historian Ludovic Kennedy.
Interior ROV footage showed that the "terrible destruction" the Anglo-American expedition reported was in fact to the torpedo bulges, which were designed to absorb the energy of torpedoes and plunging shells. Underneath the torn bulge sheeting, the ship's 320 mm (12.6 inch) thick main belt armour appeared to be intact.
@JazzJaRa that depends whos account of it you read others say that the buldge failed to absorb the damage and there were holes in the actual hull which wouldnt be unreasonable because buldges werent often as effective as was hoped (although better than nothing) And you dont have to keep throwing ship specs at me I know what they are
Though ultimately it doesnt really matter, the ship was defeated in combat and because of the royal navy, that counts more than who made the Coup de grâce i suppose
@12ock Bismarck had a cruiser as escort. The reason it did not have destroyers or u-boats is because this was not a task force, task forces get too much attention, these two ships were on merchant raiding missions, they were after merchant ships in the north atlantic only, they were not out to fight warships at that time. They also were going to sink american cruisers at u.s - canadian coastline.
Yes, I agree. Those 15 inch guns were tremendously powerful. It seemed the ship was blowing up after each salvo with all that fire and smoke....I'm sure that ship rocked back and forth each time it fired and you certainly would need cotton in your ears if you were on board:)
@RMSTitanic87 It's equally remarkable that in the video, you can hear the shells sailing through the air; something which no war film is ever able to capture.
awesome footage of the Bismarck firing !

The Hood was over rated. Didn't even score a hit on Prinz Eugene. Atleast POW got a few shots in before getting molested by Bismark and retreating

The men in command made mistakes, so they lost. If only Nelson commanded the bismark.
