  • beautiful. like watching a movie or play.

  • Arariyo~ Arari~gah nat ne~~hae~ ah hae !!!

  • Can you tell me who the arranger for the piece is?

  • this arrangement is gorgeous

  • Wow that North Koreans allowed the whole American Orch into their country!!! And the American Orch is playing their music...I can already feel our dreams are coming true, North Koreans and Americans loving each other!

  • @SoundProfessionalDVD As much as i hope for the same thing, this was sadly just a diplomatic mission i believe a couple a years back

  • @SoundProfessionalDVD I wouldn't get my hopes up. This was from 2008. A whole lot of artillery shelling and ship sinking has happened since then.

  • During this time of mourning, for the passing of the leader of North Korea, I hope for a new era of peace between North and South Korea. I hope the separated families can meet once again, in peace. I am not ashamed to cry, of photos showing sad farewells, between rare reunions of separated families.

  • The old folks singing this song in the past must have been crying seeing both Koreas now.

  • really moving song.

  • koreans are divided because the dirty chinese pigs invaded the korean peninsula.

  • man this song takes me to some misty mountain...and just seeing the morning sun slowly rising up...with deers flocking close to a river...awww yeahhh....

  • Very moved lady. 6:23

  • Koreans used to sing this long before they were divided. Very sad to think. Moves me that theyre the same culture, same history, same peninsula and yet theyre separated.

  • Sounds great as a Western musical piece, but it completely loses its Asian sound when this orchestra plays it. Nice rendition anyway I guess.

  • This performance always moves me to tears. The orchestra is brlliant, the score is overwhelming and the audience is obviously moved.

  • This rendition has to be the best, maybe its because of the sound quaility.

  • "Arirang" is iconic among Koreans. North or South.

Forget about "ping pong diplomacy." Maybe "music diplomacy" is the way to go.

Americans (I am one): If you get a chance to know one or many Koreans -- go for it. They been called the "Irish of the Orient." Well, that's an approximation. Fact is, they have a unique culture, with unique accomplishments. Like a phonetic language, Hangul.

    Koreans are special.

  • 10 people who disliked this has no souls.

  • lol china trying to steal everything!!

  • this song is like a metaphor for north and south....

  • I found it sooooo funny; someone commented "north korea is the best korea" and NO ONE said anything back to him lollol

Nobody wants to be picked up by north korea... okay, sad but true, and hilarious altogether.

  • @wrongforthat "north korea is best korea" is a meme lol

  • Arirang: old Korean for "my beautiful dear." If you dislike this you have no soul. It's a beautiful love song.

  • Gorgeous. A mexican lover here.

  • I bet every single Korean that I have met with loves this traditional Korean song, and it is touchig and just amazing....

  • I am 50% korean, half and half but I love this song 100%!!!!! :)

  • @AndyANiceGuy wow me too

  • One last Caveat....Korean, Japanese, and Chinese..are all actually fucking separate, on a cultural level that folks like us in the West can only begin to understand. To be fair, this IS in part because our languages are so radically different in principle and construction..however, it's just disheartening to anyone who wants to improve international relations at all when folks--myself included--busy themselves with the semantics of where such a beautiful song came from.

  • M'kay, just to try and be a prick here, but a reasonable one....Arirang is a Korean folk song--one dating back to the Middle Ages--NOT just the European Middle Ages, but those of the Asian continent. It's basic premise is, loosely translated, a "typical" love story...of a man and woman of two powerful, noble families, deeply in love, and physically split apart by a mountain range...and through the entirety of this song, they overcome all obstacles, in true love, to be united.

  • @yusuke19840923

haha who said arirang was chinese culture ? china governent said arirang was cultore of chosun .

    Don.t steal other culture,

  • @sumJJaJang See my post against your "babble". Uneducated pricks like you are only contributing to this nation and many others never, if ever, moving forward. And if you are personally happy with that, then I pity you.

  • @HerrCollier Who are you talking to? @sumJJaJang is Korean and has a right to defend his culture. I think you have confused him with the Japanese guy under him (yusuke19840923). Get off your high horse, for Christs sake and stop being a prick.

  • @yusuke19840923 I'm sorry, but it's a fucking lie.

  • @yusuke19840923 what the hell.. sometimes japanese are so weird

  • @goodbye280 Japanese? I'm sorry....this is a purely Korean folk song. So where the fuck do you get off saying it's Japanese? Hate to break it to you friend, but there actually is a HUGE difference between Japan and Korea. Who ever taught you otherwise is a culturally blind hack.

  • @HerrCollier YEAH JAPANESE. HE IS A JAPANESE. OKAY? cant you fucking see that im talking to yusuke19840923? and dont worry i know arirang is a korean folk song. not chinese nor japanese. that is the reason why i replied yusukes comment. hope you can read this one properly.

  • @yusuke19840923 違います。You're wrong.

  • Now commie imperialist land grabbing chinese pigs submitted Arirang as Chinese... Whats next???

  • china trys to steal arirang song from korean! china will destroy every culture!

  • lovely....

  • what an important and historic event.....we can only hope more cross cultural opening up will follow

  • was kim jong il there?

  • is this program music?

  • I'm korean and I'm proud to be korean! DEHANMINGOOK

  • @PhillipPark90

    @MaintainProtectionx

    lol

its the name of a specific mountain

  • Arirang music is really impressive, I guess. I love Korea, [number]! Yu Na Kim, South Korea, Fighting, Action!

    Finally, the Japanese turned off

  • This is such moving and "epic" music! It's quite majestic and amazing that it's survived for more than half a millennium.

Also, @MrPobyful No one said anything about figure skating, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't try to instigate something.

  • I don't think there's any other song that exemplifies Korean soul like Arirang. It's both happy sad and full of hope.

  • This makes me cry. Beautiful! Wow.

  • When North and South Korea reunite this should be the national anthem

  • @robin8110 splendid idea!! :D

  • @robin8110 IF they ever reunite.

    That'll be the day...

  • were playing an exercpt from it in my middle school band its one the most fun somgs ive ever played

  • This gave me goosebumps. So beautiful :*)

  • appariently 9 people dont know korean

  • so sweet and calm:D

  • I just saw whole movie. Arirang is amazing.

  • Music is a universal language - even though the audience and orchestra speak completely different languages, you don't need to be able to speak English or Korean to understand how beautiful and how much emotion and pain is in this piece.

This was a very moving performance. Thanks for posting!

  • It was a very proud moment as an American when I originally watched it live

  • @beastlestnisity Your comment about arirang is worth about as respectable as frontierspr's insult to you. Your uneducated and uncivilized disrespect for a popular folk song that has survived several hundred years of existence simply shows that you do not know how good music even when you're exposed to it.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but not all opinions are equal or worth the same. I think it's safe to say most people would agree that your opinion of this wonderful piece is worthless.

  • The beauty of a folk song lies not in technical perfection but in the message it sends to those who hear it. In this case, one of Korea with its beautiful landscapes and colorful culture.

  • Ahhhh, I so love this video!

  • K nice 1st grade insult

  • Korea is beautiful.

  • @PhillipPark90 no. if it was then it would be like "ah ee rang"

  • beautiful....

  • 0:27 I didn't know that Sarah Palin played the harp.

  • @KindleFlames lol

  • @KindleFlames If Sarah Palin is on harp, John McCain should be on sousaphone, and Christine O'Donnell on triangle.

  • "Arirang" should be the anthem of United Korea!

  • beautiful it touches the hearts

  • I'm blood north Korean well done, BRAVO!

  • @garnettrulzkobe All Koreans are the same, whatever you are from the north or from the south, they are still the same people

  • @otacs2 Korea is one country divided by politics.

  • north korea is best korea

  • @grokker The hell are you smoking? Compare Seoul to Pyongyang. I think Seoul won, the lights made the difference.

  • @grokker you need to get a life kid......

  • I am in chorus at my school and we sang this song. Its a beautiful song.

  • wow arirang is love

  • @gyeol0316- That's exactly right.

  • @gyeol0316 No..thats "Sarang" Saranghye means "I love you" In korean.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful arrangement. I wonder who did it.

  • I guess the 6 people that dont like this hate americans xD

  • detached sadness... quiet sorrows... i can hear them underneath its soothing and peaceful tunes.

  • I am from korea, and just saying my feeling. wish there something more. but can't find. lack of something. and maybe appropriate for western people. but I would rather listen one that has korean traditional musical instrument. these are just my opinion and thoughts.Of course. I would thank to them make you guys amazed.

  • @mmriann Yes this doesn't sound very 'Korean'. Sounds American Anthemish. But still good.

  • @ITSMEIPLAY Learn english.

  • @Moxormog

He makes 2 typing mistakes, and you immediately tell him to learn english? Please, lay off him, and stop the trolling. Go harrass someone else with your goal of ridding the world of hunger. I also find it rather hypocritical of someone who has more than a thousand favourites on youtube, and as such spent a lot of time on youtube, to tell a bunch of musicians to not make music and instead focus on the horrid conditions of some country. Practice what you preach, you insincere fool.

  • @Daffit0 Rofl, too easy. Bye kid

  • I'm not Korean and this music moved me....

  • @KEBokeh You dont have to be Korean to Love Korean music or let other country music "move" you!!!!!

  • @grftnbnd Why do you sound frustrated? The person said they liked it. That's a good thing!

  • i just played this on friday night with yong in orchestra and jutp, twas amazing :)!

  • I like koreans for their musicality. But I especially like korean girls.

  • lovely song...my grandmother use to sing this to me before I went to sleep at night.......of course later I found that its really not a love song. Its about this women who had lost her man because he dumped her and she is hoping that he won't get far untill he tumbles down a hill and hurts himself :P

  • @bumhokim Depends on what version it is hahahah.

  • @bumhokim thx for explanation

  • The only way that the 2 Koreas will be united is if the DPRK renounces Communism and embraces democratic rule, including free elections and a respect of human rights for all people! Because if Kim Jong Il invades South Korea and reunites it by force, the North will have Hell to Pay! Freedom for North Korea!

  • @pookerville Kim Jong Il wouldn't try to invade the Southern half, because there are still American Troops there.

  • One of the most well made tunes ever in my eyes. Its hard to top this magnificant song.

  • @Larsy it also because of the lyrics.

  • @spanishprisoner Of course, its a rather sweet and simple story that goes with it.. But in this, the melody was the thing centered on! But you are correct. :)

  • 6 dickweeds disliked this. i'm white, but i love almost everything about korea.

  • @Astribeat17 ... i disagree...

  • @myungfile92 Hmmm? You would rather stick to the song that was composed by a Japanese sympathizer? :x I agree with Astrobeat17 on this one. This song represents "Korea" more than "애국가" in every aspect and there's no other song that can really hit the chord in every Korean's heart like this one. But then, unfortunately, Arirang's lyric probably disqualifies it from ever becoming the anthem... :)

  • @ZakuKye well~ tat might be true....

but i can tell... the lyrics of Arirang for National anthem? idk man...

  • @myungfile92 You're not making much sense there. I said the lyric will disqualify Arirang from becoming Korean national anthem, not the other way around. Did you read properly?

  • Beautiful.

Music is Love and as such rises above wars, controntations, conflicts and Death itself, for Love and Music is immortal.

  • soo soothing ....love this

  • I love this song. Funny, first heard of it in the movie "dragon wars". Couldn´t get it out of my head since. And now I found it on youtube in such quality. Just great to listen :D

  • Only the melody is oriental, the overall song and accompaniment is Westernised. Perfect combo. I love the sound of oriental music but not their instruments. Somehow I don't get tired of hearing the same tune repeatedly. Wonderful arrangement of a melody only 4 lines long.

  • Tears in my eyes....

  • i got ing this in a musical in grade school

  • Its beautiful T-T

  • I remember when this concert happened. Monumental. That's what's great about the arts, the togetherness and universality, that people can shut up about politics for a few moments and enjoy something together.

  • mais quelle merveille... simplement sublime

  • mais quelle merveille... simplement sublime

  • mais quelle merveille... simplement sublime

  • mais quelle merveille... simplement sublime

  • Beautiful.

  • sigh..

  • Kamsahamnida

  • sad and beautiful amazing song

  • If North and South Korea are ever reunited, they should make this song their national anthem.

  • national anthems arent 10 minutes long.

  • I didn't say this version, just this song. The original is only about 2 minutes long.

  • Comment removed

  • @itskevinnlee JA, MEIN FUHRER!!

  • lol

  • yeah that's a very good idea, it is very traditional song, well known also it is very peaceful and glorious. however, the song is about a woman who wishes his husband to be ill because he's left her...

that's what the lyric is about......

  • Yeah, but the American national anthem was originally a British drinking song, so I'm not sure that automatically disqualifies it.

  • wow, that's something i didn't know~ And even if they do make this song as Korean national anthem, as I am Korean, I'll agree~ hehe

  • The Star Spangled banner is simply set to the tune of an old British drinking song, which was already popular in the US 200 years ago. The lyrics, however are an original American composition. So, it's not really British at all.

  • @Astrobeat17 I agree!

  • @Astrobeat17 TOTALLY. musical diplomacy.

  • @Astrobeat17 that would be beautiful

  • @Astrobeat17 even though the melody is most beautyful its not sufficient to be a national anthem.. to long and to less rythm.

  • @Astrobeat17 I think in Olympic Games, both Koreas are present as a United Korea team and they play this song as their Anthem :), Its such a beautiful song.

  • @YotJoey The North Koreans and South Koreans marched under a unified flag at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.

  • @Astrobeat17 God forbid they're ever reunited.

  • @Astrobeat17 i don't think they would want to stand for a whole 9 minutes

  • @Astrobeat17 That is my idea. but many koreans say that this is a folk song, it is about love not about Korea.

  • @Astrobeat17 then they'll prolly have another war over which version is better. they'll never reunite...but i hope one day they do, at least while im alive.

  • Das ist sehr schon

  • Oh my God WOW, beautiful, what a wonderful way to imply a potential unification between opposing countries! Many people said they thought differently of Americans after hearing the beautiful music. touching. oh and not to mention about South Korea, isn't this song about a unification between both parts of Korea?

  • no. its traditional korean folk song about a lover that walks away or something. yeah u should watch the old korean ladies sing it. awesome

  • the song is 600 years old but a lot of ppl today c it as that

  • Pray that South and North Korea can be unified..

  • i think all of us have heard the arirang melody at least once or twice, but have never really listened properly to it. now that i've listened to it for real i've understood how beautiful it really is :/ it's the sort of song that gives you goosebumps. now this is music.

  • The greatest concert I ever heard! Long life to classical music!

  • amazing.

they truly brought out the beauty of arirang.

    i love my country, korea.

  • @sayyumhayyum daehanminguk/joseon mansae!

  • what a beautiful song :D makes me all happy inside lol

  • Piccolo solo!

    love it.

  • It would be really nice to enjoy the music without seeing a political debate going on beneath it...just saying.

  • @dejpau3825 it wasnt a debate. If you read closely I was learning something... Not arguing about anything.

  • Does anyone know how long a show usually lasts? I got tickets to see Stravinsky (Firebird and Psalms)

  • This song makes me feel homesick for a place I've never been to...

  • i know right?

  • Well said, exactly the feeling that I also get...

  • It sounds like a music for a western because both oriental music and those film composers use the pentatonic scale.

  • The guy on the verge of tears at 3:15 made ME cry. Imagine all of the people in the North who haven't seen parts of their family for over 50 years

  • @JahTambo151

amen. I've seen movies and documentaries about the Korean war and saw how horrible it must have looked. Korea split apart for the same reason almost every country split in the 20th century: Communism.

  • More like FDR and Churchill's inability to assert themselves after the end of the war. They could have done just a little bit more to dictate how the Axis territories got broken up, the Soviets were in no place to bargain until they got "The Bomb" in 1949.

  • What were they bargaining? North Korea? I thought they were both Allied countries during WW
