Fastastic video. The copter pilot and rigging personnel had guts to suspend from so high to build that tower. I have a video here from July 1974 of CN building the concrete triangled base. Thanks for sharing!
Rosabelle the nut bar was a friend of mine his name was bill ustus he jumped from planes on the weekend at camp Borden,he new what he was doing and was fired from the job when he landed.he was the best connector i ever worked with, very few people wish to ecknowledge this fact that bill was the first not he stunt men
I remember watching this live on TV and I could see it (with binoculars) from my 23rd floor balcony, way up in North York/Finch & Sentinel area! It was really an iconic moment in Toronto. It really put Toronto on the world map.
My dad took me to work that day, let me skip school, to come and see this. Before they renovated the tower, there was a big display about one of the ironworkers who was a bit of a nutbar, he parachuted off the middle of the tower on his last day of work. It was sort of an urband legend, but the display in the tower actually had pics of it. Thanks for the video.
Hi HorkinGreeners, nice video, it is great to see historical footage shared online for everyone. This video would be great for the Canada’s Got Treasures collection, which aims to feature Canadian videos of personal or cultural significance. Help celebrate Canadian diversity by joining our YouTube group (/group/TresorTreasure) and submitting your video. It would be made available on our channel and website.
There were 2 Helicopter Pilot(s) flying the AirCrane for Camron Engineering during the final drop of the last comm's antenna. One pilot took commands from the Ironworker's foreman on the mast, and forwarded instructions to the chief pilot of the ship. The other Pilot followed detailed instructions and maneuvered the ship Fore' and aft' port' and starboard' inch by inch as instructed by co-pilot, from detailed commands by ironworkers on CN's Upper mast
My father was a steel foreman during the building of the CN tower. His final job before retirement, he was the person who guided the helicopter and ordered the men to their positions. He also had had a stroke before this job and didn't know. He was asked to retire,as his co-workers could see his unsteadiness while walking the beams. They were afraid he would fall to his death. He passed away in 2000.. 90 years old and no academic training, He knew his job well. God Bless Felix Bellefeuille
Does anyone remember a local Toronto newspaper running a competition whereby the winner was taken to the very tip of the tower? Appareently, its about 6 feet wide up there and the lady winner was so terrified, she froze solid and wouldn't come down!!!!
Anyone know where I can find that article? I've been looking for years.
Well, apparently after the top piece of the antenna was bolted on, the riggers took a piss off the top of the tower to celebrate (as was/is customary). So, if you felt it raining, now you know why!

Maybe I hope the full CN Tower construction film goes on DVD and Blu Ray if this happens later in life.
